  1. Daysdead. It will be that exqisitely warm weather you get up there. They need to be kept cool so you may have to take the beer out of the fridge. It is a challenge here as well with a few days of norwesters. That is why I keep a few in different places so it would be a realy bad day to lose the lot. The other thing could be that there has been too many and they have polluted themselves out of a home with waste. If you get too many start another. I also change the area I feed periodically and also loosen the media up now and then with a fork. There are more here when you are down.
  2. Fish feeding on plant or algae must be getting a high intake of protein but it will be plant protein rather than meat protein. The only difference may be that when dehydrated the concentratin will be higher bacause when alive it is probably over 90% water. All living things are built from protein.
  3. Wouldn't be pollen would it?
  4. As stated, if the killies survive so will the java fern. There are a number of Java fern types and I am not sure about each one but would suspect they will be similar. It should grow well with sunlight from above but if it "dies" I would leave it as this is often where plantlettes develop. Please report back.
  5. Head up swimming can indicate gill flukes---is it "breathing" fast?
  6. Is it being picked on by the others. Angels have a pecking order and it could be at the bottom of the pile.
  7. Your plants will never grow if you keep pulling them out and replanting them so you can clean the gravel so it is pristine and leaves no food for the plants. If you want plants to grow they will need food and have a chance to get established. Sword plants lose existing roots and grow new ones when transplaned. Leave the media and just take the unsightly gunge off the top when it gets too much. This will also give a chance for bacteria to multiply in the gravel as well and will help with the recycling.
  8. 50% of the heat loss is through the ceiling and only 10% through the floor. How did you fix the polystyrene and the polythene sheeting? I used batts and lined with sheet steel from that roofing place in Shands Road just over Halswell Junction Rd and sealed the joints with RTV. You should only get condensation if the walls are cooler than the air. Where are you going to put the 20 tanks you will need when you get breeding successfully?

    Cory's

I used to often breed cories in a bare tank before putting other fry in there to raise. they do a better job of cleaning excess food than snails and are worth more to sell. Abit like quail in an aviery.
  10. I used to run a purpose built fishhouse with about 50 tanks which were grossly overloaded with fish and required massive and frequent water changes. It was heated by a fan that ran continuously and a 1kW heater that was on about 25% of the time. 100mm of poly in the floor and batts and sisalation in ceiling and walls. At the moment we have a number of tanks in 3 different places around the house and garage (4 x 4 footers and a few breeding tanks) and the power is about $150 - $180 summer and $200 - $250 winter. Yhe house is uninsulated other than batts in the ceiling. Heavy insulation cuts the power consumption to hell. If I was doing it again I would build a room for that only, insulate heavily and use the heat from water going out to heat the water going in. Heaps of tanks helps as well as it acts as a heat sink. There is not much energy in the air that leaves when you open the door but there is a lot in the water that stays behind, or goes to waste with water changes.
  11. You can't realy tell their age by size as it is dependant on how well they have been fed.
  12. Free for the pickup. Peddle youy bike. Have PMed
  13. I have a filter smaller than that on a tank with three breeding turtles and very small rio sponge filters on my plant tanks mainly to prevent too much temperature layering. Where did you get the 4 x volume/hour from?
  14. It will be OK provided there is an easily accessable area that it can get up on to dry out and get some sun.
  15. Any of the above would be OK if you rinse it well afterwards. You realy have to start again with the filter material if you want to be safe.
  16. Goldfish carry a lot of parasites and I would not put other fish into a tank that has had them in without sterilizing everything. Salt will clean the tank but I would boil everything else.
  17. If it has a burst seam I would strip the tank right down and rebuild it. A burst seam on a 6 foot tank full of water and fish would be a very sad day
  18. It doesn't matter how many you have, They will all scurry off when they see you. They get more confident as they get older. The Americans don't just call them sliders because they can't spell terrapin.
  19. You could use your convicts as feeders---they breed like mad and it is about all they are good for.
  20. That is what you want. Get a few and breed them.
  21. What temperature is the tank rising too? Mine are set at 22-23 but often rise above that and the fish don't seem to be organising a demo. Some of the small waterways these fish live in must get pretty warm during the day.
  22. I suspect that could be one reason why people are having so much trouble with guppies.
