  1. Wasting disease can have a number of causes including piscine tuberculosis. It is hard to treat any disease if you don't know what it is.
  2. I think the glue used in all those products is urea formaldehyde and it leaches formaldehyde when warmed up. You need to seal it very well to prevent this leaching as well as preventing water ingress. I have just today finished building a terrarium from 12mm ply and have applied undercoat and two coats of water based enamel to seal it.
  3. My guess would be that it is a male and also that it carries a gold gene and a stripeless gene (blusher) as well as zebra and lace. If you put the pair into a seperate bare 50 litre tank with a slate hanging near the surface they should spawn again in a couple of weeks if well fed, and you can easily remove the eggs and hatch them. Gold is recessive and you should therefore get some interesting offspring.
  4. It is an example of why it is not easy to get fish in NZ. It shows that there are big markets out there and they are not here.
  5. If they were discus eggs I would expect them to be showing interest but corries don't mind eggs. My guess is therefore corries.
  6. Looks to me like 40 on the left, 40 on the right and 40 in the middle = 120. Some fishroom.
  7. A. undulatus and A. crispus I think. Some people think the undulatus is a hybrid with natans.
  8. Better behave while in Fiji or you may get a free trip home.
  9. Mine are keen on Elodea canadensis (the legal oxygen weed from the pet shop). Cheaper to hook it out of the river yourself.
  10. I think there would be as much chance of banning all non native pets in the USA as there would be of banning guns or bibles.
  11. It is a strong oxidizing agent like chlorine. If you make a small pile of condys and pour a drop of glycerine onto it it will oxidise the glycerine and burst into flames. We used to use it for fuses when kids.
  12. If you mix pot. permangenate and glycerine it will spontaneously ignite.
  13. Which compound is a carcinogen? They are all poisonous as we are tryinmg to poison snails.
  14. Are you sure they ate and not that they have relocated them?
  15. My 3 year old male has been sleeping up large behind a bit of drift wood for 3 days but came out yesterday for a brief visit then went back to his possy. Female is as active as ever.
  16. I have some Sagittaria microfolia which remains a lot shorter than subulata. It has been grown emersed and is looking a bit rough because the weather is a bit cold for it. You are welcome to come and get some free. If you want some PM me. Compost heap shortly.
  17. JBL fert balls are about your only option without pulling the tank to bits and starting again. If you were to do that I would go with AquaBasis, mainly because that is what I have used.
  18. Animals and plants can be banned nationally or locally. In this case the ARC has banned blue tonges because they feel with having live young and not eggs that require a prolonged incubation period they will survive and multiply on their side of the Bombay Hills. I would think that the Southland Regional Council would not be too concerned.
  19. Whitebait are the young of a number of types of native fish including inanga.
  20. Dropsy is a sign of water retention caused by kidney problems with a whole range of causes. Unless you know the cause of the kidney failure it is not possible to treat it. I have tried treating it in the past with epson salts and various antibiotics but without any prolonged success. By the time you see the scale protrusion it is so sdvanced that I think the kidney damage is passed repair and the kindest thing to do is put the fish out of its misery. It can be infectious (depends on the cause) but I would just remove the fish and keep the remainder in as good a water condition as you can. It can be a problem with anabantoids.
  21. There is another side to this. This type of law is normally brought in because there have been a heap of problems and it may be that the freedom to have just about any sort of pet in USA has created problems that are causing this change to come about. Like many situations somewhere in the middle can be best and if we were to allow the sort of freedoms they have had we could eventually end up with it going full circle also. What we need is a bit more rationality and consistancy and less knee jerks. Unfortunately laws are not made to control normal, rational people, but idiots.
  22. I feed wingless fruit flies and wild winged ones to my fire bellied newts and add a slice of apple to the terrarium. They are atracted to that and it is easy to see how much food there is still available. The newts head to the apple for lunch. Fruit flies are a bit small for my green and gold frogs.
  23. The fighters I have seen imported were in waaaay smaller bags with a lot less water. There shouldn't be a lot of poo in the water if they had starved them before sending them.
