  1. Check the article on fruit flies in the last mag.
  2. Whiteworms need to be drier and cooler than grindles. I use expired potting mix or seed raising mix.
  3. A lot of the problem can be solved by opening windows as well. The building code requires that occupiable rooms have 10% of the floor area in windows for natural light and 5% of the floor area in openable windows for natural ventilation. Windows will not ventilate unless you open them.
  4. Most of the small foreground plants need good light. It is a bad time of the year for buying plants as most are grown emersed and don't do well at this time of year. Some that might be available would be: Glossostigma elatinoides; Echinodorus tenellus tenellus, tenellus latifolius, tenellus parvula, quadricostatus, horizontalis, parviflorus "tropica", schluteri leopard; Sagittaria microfolia (does not grow much taller than 50mm). There was also a shorter variety of hairgrass ( Eleocharis) but I have not seen it in years; Cryptocoryne nevilii nevilii; Hydrocotyle verticillata. I have some of the above but not available for sale at this time of year.
  5. If you get any to hatch they will be silver split to gold and you will need to breed the offspring to each other to get 25% golds. Hang a slate neer the surface and remove the eggs if you want any to survive.
  6. I always used pieces 100mm x 100mm with stainless steel hooks. They can be easily removed and hatched in a small tank 150mm x 150mm with an airstone. Angels like to spawn near the top of the tank and they can't eat the eggs if you take them away.
  7. I would go with Barrie, I find them easier than anything else. You need to start at the place with the most thickness of glue and therefore the greatest gap between the pieces of glass.
  8. Yes, unless the thermostat is not working. They usually fail through water getting in and that will usually cause the thermostat to jamb in the on position.
  9. When I was breeding livebearers I made a mix of oxe heart, vegetables and porridge ground up finely and cooked like a steam pudding then stored in the freezer. I had them in bare tanks and added a lump each day and any left was removed. With a pilot light they get to graze 24/7.
  10. What adhesive did you use to glue the pieces together without it all disolving. I heard no more nails is OK. Anybody know?
  11. I have mine in a terrarium divided into half land and half water and I heat the water with an aquarium heater.
  12. Who would buy bread from a skinny baker?
  13. The female cockroaches carry the eggs in a container with them and when you kill the female the eggs will still hatch. You therefore need to use the poison about every 6 weeks in order to kill the next generetion before they have a chance to mature and breed. I have seen people spend years trying to irradicate them and would strongly advice you get professional pest control people in. They are immune to many insecticides and I know of no natural method that works. I am assuming you have the German variety. There is an insecticide that works by physically getting between the body segments rather than by poisoning them chemically but I can't remember the name.
  14. To get back to the point. A number of fish species are raised for food in asia but they are freshwater varieties. I don't think many marine fish are commercially viable to raise for food. Salmon would be an example that is viable. To the other matter---nothing is compulsary, if you don't want to eat fish, or pork or mutton birds-----please don't, but do accept that other people may have a different value system and their beliefs are as valid as anyone elses.
  15. There are four shops down here that have sold killies in the past. I have sold killies to some of the shops and can understand Barries frustration with misinformation. There is a shop which sells them and breeds them at the moment, although I don't think there are any in the shop at present. The same sort of ignorance applies to most shops with plants and other specialist fish like africans so no doubt people with a keen interest in these will get as frustrated as Barrie. Unfortunately there are a lot of fishkeepers out there prepared to give advice when they realy don't know a lot about the subject and also a lot of shops only interested in making money. May the god of killies go with you.
  16. I think the point was that killies other than anuals live longer than a year.
  17. If you think that getting ponsied up in flash and expensive gear, getting drunk and doing a heap of things that you would not do sober is somehow improving your life I would respectfully suggest that you look carefully at your life. But do have a good day.
  18. Sounds like fun. The school I went to didn't have a ball. We went to school to get educated, and there was no way my parents would be paying that sort of money for a dance in ponsy gears.

    $2500

You always factor the potential revenue from a breeding pair when figuring what it would be worth. I have paid high prices for fish sometimes because I thought I could breed them and recover that cost. Won some and lost some. Worth what someone wants to pay as the man says. The other choice is to buy a few smaller and cheaper ones and grow them up to breeding size and get your own pair or pairs (maybe).

If the eggs are fertile and if the young survive and grow to a saleable size you will more than get your money back. If they spawn again you may even make a handsome profit. If you like ifs put in a bid otherwise buy a lotto ticket where the odds of winning are a lot less.
  21. The combination you have should work well for plant growth if the tubes are not too old. You should get a good mix of red and blue. The tubes may be a lot cheaper from a wholesaler like lamp specialists.
  22. There are not the same controls on animal food as there is on human food and there are different types of each ingredient specified. I know of examples where completely un utilizable protein was added to stock food to raise the protein content. Not all protein, fat etc are the same and the ash could be rubbish or non combustible required minerals. It is therefore a bit hard to tell. The stuff manufactured by a reputable company will probably cost more but will probably be better.
  23. A tube radiates light in all directions and if you put the reflector too close to the tube you will be reflecting the light back through the tube and most will be lost.
  24. If you want to use very strong light you will also need to add carbon from CO2 or flourish excell, macronutrient and micronutrient. It has to come as a complete package so that the plants can grow. I can't help with the halide info as I know nothing about them.
  25. If it has no starter as stated it will be electronic. The answer probably is: Yes you can but it may not be a good idea.
