    New Tank

I'd say that a 5 - 6 foot would be the minimum for oscars - I wouldn't use 4 foot its too small - Choose another fish if you can't give it it minimum requirements - Theres a wide variety around - save yourself some stress.
  4. Wow Chimera weird fish http://www.arowana.com.sg/gpg7.html
  5. Do you know / remember how much a 404 was/is Wok?
  6. A new sponge filter will need to be cycled first. You will need to do this by operating it for at least a week in the community tank. My advice - Leave everything as is but get a sponge filter ready as above and provide them with a spawning surface that can easily be removed. You cannot take out the power filter this time so hope for the best until the are free swimming and can be netted out. The hard part will be getting future spawns by this pair that are not laid on the power filter. Someone may have some advice on what they will like better.
  7. What sort of power filter is in your four footer?
  8. Haha very funny - make it cheaper
  9. Thanks for that info - that is bad luck waiting to happen
  10. I have actually rigged it now and its busily working away being cultured in my established 4 foot community - they getting a bit blown away by the flow tho  I've had to restrict the flow a bit so thats good - cause it not staying there. It looks like a powerful filter unlike the aquaones which are good but a little more sedate. And upon reflection I would have loved to buy it local however it would mean paying twice as much as from the Auckland supplier - Hamilton pet shops certainly know how to use a pricing gun - and as I already have to support the government I cannot afford to keep the retailer decked out like the governement is The best place to get them at the moment is Tropical Blues in Tirau - and that is awhile away too especially now we are supporting the opec arabs as well as the government. I would have paid an extra $50 to get it local but not $300 -

    Krib Question

Yes they will get over it - And they generally don't hurt each other too bad - unlike some very bad jewels I have
  13. Thanks Shae  After 24 hours to lick my wounds I'm glad I bought it and it will be working soon enough. Night shift sends me toward the abyss... Just annoying that the three cheapo aqua one cf700's I have, have all turned up fully operational from day one - I guess the italians that put mine in the box were in a hurry for a siesta Might have to buy chinese made instead of italian
  14. Well it finally arrived - This so called leading brand Fluval 404 canister filter - Oooh exciting - Spent an hour or so setting it up using the poor instructions it comes with - And SHOCK HORROR - missing critical parts -          -grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr - - Gee I'm glad I bought quality And surprise surprise won't be able to contact supplier til Monday - Thank goodness I'll have had a chance to mull by then
  15. Lids are off on my tanks - except when new livestock goes in that may be inclined to jump - It saves me breaking the lid and getting  that I rush into things
  16. No you can't - Most silicon is designed to b cured in dry conditions at least til it is properly skinned - then it is toxic to fish for around a week and needs thorough rinsing when properly cured.
  17. In the past I have used a trough ballcock to control the syphon back into the sump. The hose attached to the troughvalve is fed up and positioned securely well below the waterline using a canister filter type inlet. As the pump removes water from the sump the trough valve opens and syphons water from the tank where the pump is pumping to (obviously). (you have to start the syphon and make sure the line is free of air) Clear as mud?? Just make sure the inlet to the syphon is secure along with the trough valve. You cant beat a drilled setup tho heaps less drama.
  18. That was awesome reef - You'll have everyone oohing and aahing rushing out and buying corals - You'll be struggling to cope with the profits. 5000 litres will help eat that for ya
  19. Yeah I bought a King 3 recently and it is a bit 2 noisy for my requirements. It would probably be quieter on a concrete floor though as it tends to send a vibration through the wooden floor where it is located. It is putting out about 1200 l/hr at 1.6m so may get to 1400 at 1.2. Good luck with your aquarium.
  20. Hi Aquamum. You have learned a valuable lesson already - don't get information from a salesperson in a petshop. IMHO they think they know it all yet are more than willing to make a buck at the expense of a fishs life - it is all to common to see a retailer selling a 10 litre goldfish bowl and a poor fishy to a budding aquarist. Best to get advice in here so well done for being here. One thing I think is important for you to know (in case you don't) is never ever wash your filter material under the tap. Always just gently rinse it out in a container of aquarium water which you can discard - ie not in the tank. Otherwise the beneficial bacteria which grow on the filter will die from either chlorine poisoning or from a sudden change in temperature or both. Good luck and happy new year.
