Mikey
Awesome way to spend a weekend in my opinion... looks like a successful trip! :nfs:
blueether
Was a nice way to spend a day or two. Yes there are some good trout in the stream, mostly lower than where I was: You can just make out the tail of a "nice" rainbow jack

hovmoller
blueether have you kept young trout in your tank before? If yes how do they adapt to tank life? easy to feed? etc. Cheers
Godly3vil
Just wondering if the legal size limit applies if you are taking fish home to keep them in an aquarium?
F15hguy
it is technically illegal to take Trout with a net you must used an approved fishing method. and also technically illegal to take fish undersized even if for an aquarium (unless it is farmed, hence the undersized crayfish and paua in some nz marine tanks)
blueether
No I haven't taken fingerling trout home and put it in the pond with the comet... I haven't seen the fish I didn't bring home for a while.
Stella
Nice photos! Looks like the underwater camera survived its incident I think the troutlets are brown trout - the adipose fin has an orange edge to it. (nice rock-stack in the panoramic shot)
#!CrunchBang
If you want some small trout, try asking fish and game. The fish and game office in whangarei had a tank with some browns, rainbows and tigers in it and Rudy was really nice too.
Ira
Just wondering if the legal size limit applies if you are taking fish home to keep them in an aquarium? It's illegal to take the introduced, common, invasive predatory species out of the wild. It's perfectly legal to take the delicate threatened native species though.... alanmin4304
Trout do not do well in ponds as they require cold highly oxygenated water. I know from experience---not that I would take undersized trout without a licence. They lasted a couple of years and hardly grew at all. Had to get rid of them when maf were coming around to give approval for quarantine (white clouds also). Put some in the local oxidation ponds and they lasted a couple of years as well. F15hguy
although I have been told of a few Aquaponics ponds in Aussie that use trout.......... perch would be better, but technically you need to find a fish farm to purchase livestock.... Stella
Apparently there was a HUGE battle when they were trying to change the law to allow salmon farming. It was an ELECTION ISSUE would you believe?! The massive legal protections for trout and salmon largely stem from the settlers' reactions to the English angling scene, where it was mostly limited to the upper classes who either owned trout streams, or could buy access to them. Hence not being allowed to farm, own or sell them, and access may not be charged for, nor private stocks owned. Today I had my first conversation with another human being in 10 days. It was with a trout fisherman who said that native fish were only trout food and it doesn't matter what happens to them as they aren't part of the economy. I was torn between walking out and leaving my pile of dishes in the camp sink, and sucking it down just so I could have a conversation.
