kiwiplymouth
I am trying to establish plants and fish in my new pond but every week the fish disappear and the plants get pulled out. I originally thought that it was the neighbours kids but I came home today to find 10 ducks in the pond creating all sorts of havoc. The pond is about 6m x 1.5m with two thirds of it being under the second story deck. I don't want to cover it with netting if I can avoid it. Can anyone suggest any other deterrents that I can use
Carlos & Siran
Something 12 gauged and double barreled? :bounce:

livingart
Something 12 gauged and double barreled? :bounce: a tame falcon or one of those big plastic owls they sell at sports shops or rural stores may work
Stella
they have put those owls in the trees around palmy's square. It is funny waling through there in winter when the leaves have fallen. There is an owl in the centre, surrounded by a metre-wide bird-free area, then all the birds perched outside of that

kiwiplymouth
Thanks LA The Giant Scare Eye Visual Bird Chaser, the Prowler Owl and the Terror Eyes all look like good options. I will get in contact with them and see which is the most effective against ducks.

Jennifer
Nice pond KP. If all else fails perhaps you can rent a greyhound. 8)
smidey
i guess this is why i have seen many fish ponds with netting over them. not pretty to look at & totally defeats the effort of the look of it but does the job.
livingart
another option is nylon fishing line strung tight in a 30cm grid pattern just under the water level not easy to do with a plastic pond liner though the pond looks good

kiwiplymouth
Ohhh come one, you know you want the alligator head! I emailed the company and this was their reply  Thanks for your enquiry. We have found the best deterrent to be the Gator Gard, these can be placed on and around pool edges, ducks have a inbuilt fear of these types of predators and shy away from them
Sam Newman
You can also buy Hawk decoys. The common scarecrow might also be a fun thing to try.
Sam Newman
Of course, the shotgun is fun. Open weekend beginning of May.

kiwiplymouth
Good idea but it would probably go off all the time because of nearby plants moving in the breeze. I couldn't resist, I ordered the gator head
livingart
now you just need a motion sensor and a motor in the gator head
oeminx
You should have gone with the full live gator, wouldn't that be more fun
kiwiplymouth
I was going to get a live one but blardy MAF wouldn't let me
Sam Newman
How about 13 attack goldfish? You could get in a goldfish whisperer to train them.
