Aaron-Betta
Does anyone have any experience in giving their well endowed livebearers the snip? I have a nice lyretailed sword I wish to breed from but I am a bit hesitant about giving him the snip. Does anyone have any tips?

livingart
found a site on google for this a while back sorry can't remember where but involved a pair of scissors and snipping back to a normal gonopodium length try googling trimming gonopodium
VinsonMassif
Perhaps separating that male from any females would be a good start...
livingart
apparently it is a common problem with breeding some longfinned livebearers http://www.aquaboards.com/viewtopic.php?id=2643 reminds me of jacobean pigeons which need long feathers trimming so they can see and then mate with the females
phoenix44
Holy Moly mother of all painful things batman! may i never be born as a long finned live bearer.

Aaron-Betta
the gonopodium is a fin, not an organ. Not literally cutting his winkie. Been doing a bit of research on it, but still unsure. Got a clean scalpel etc. Maybe give him a snip, then put him in meth blue by himself for a while. rox
Holy Moly mother of all painful things batman! may i never be born as a long finned live bearer. Then you must try to be very good in this life, grasshopper! aka phoenix44   Yes I have been told I can do this for my Ribbon Fin Guppies. As it is the female who carries the long fin gene I have stuck to breeding with either a young or not too well endowed male to keep the line going. Have had no problems so far. alanmin4304
I understood that the long finned swords were bred by using a normal male over a long finned female. Is it possible to have winkie envy?
Caper
Ahem, why do you want to make it smaller?? Caper

livingart
because of the length the male is unable to achieve breeding properly
Simian
because of the length the male is unable to achieve breeding properly Especially prevalent with Highfin & Lyre tail Genes. Think of it as a Jewish Fish from now on

cesarz
Hey Aaron, the best one to use for clipping the gonopodium to the proper length is a nailclipper. I have clipped my male swallowtail guppies and they are successfull breeders afterwards, they didnt even show any signs of pain and immediately did their job straight after the clip. Zev
I was going to say, getting him to lay still on the chopping board as you approach him with the scalpel will be a mission - clippers or a good sharp pair of small stainless scissors sounds like much less stress on the pair of you!
