sparrowmayhem
I have the frozen Bloodworm cubes am im about to use them for the first time to feed my young axolotls i understand they are messy is there anyway in perticlar to feed them or just put the cube in the tank thanks
Stella
I don't know anything about feeding axolotls, or if 'they' refers to the bloodworms of the axolotls... But when I feed bloodworm I melt them first in a very fine tea strainer under the cold tap to get all the liquid off. The liquid frozen around the bloodworms is full of nutrients that will just feed algae. The other problem with frozen bloodworm is you can really only feed one whole cube at a time, which may be more or less than you need. I find bloodworms are a convenient and well-liked food, but not great nutritionally, especially for fast-growing fish.

Dave+Amy
I leave mine in cubes - while it's on the top the bettas get their turn, while it's slowly sinking all the tetras and Discus get their share, once on the bottom it's all claimed by the GBAs and loaches...BUT i do daily water changes though
jim r
The frozen cubes never make it to the bottom of my Discus tank.
Dave+Amy
haha I do put in a little more just to make sure every little critter in there gets some at least - it's like a feeding frenzy when the bloodworms go in! Do people methyl blue their bloodworms before feeding? I don't, but I can't remember where I read it that some people do it as a precaution 'cos it might carry parasites or something? alanmin4304
I thaw mine out in a disposable drink glass and change the water a few times to get rid of the excess nutrient, then feed with an eye dropper.
Barrie
I cut the cubes into the size needed to feed each tank and chuck it in
Ira
I remove them from the package and throw them in the tank. If I'm feeling really motivated I put them in some water to defrost them so all the little wormies seperate and then pour the whole thing in the tank. whetu
I only use them just before I'm going to do a water change. I put the frozen cube in one of those cones that sticks onto the tank glass and has holes in it. As the cube thaws the fish can suck the worms out through the holes. Blood worms are one of the most popular foods when i use them (which is rarely). Theye is a complete feeding frenzy as soon as the cube goes in, and it doesn't stop until every last worm has gone. Then I do the water change.
kiwiplymouth
I use freeze dried bloodworms. A lot less mess and hassel and the same nutritional value ( i think) I just imported 1kg from the USA. Its a bit of a hassel getting them thru customs but well worth the effort as 1kg of freeze dried is approx the same as 10kg of frozen bloodworms perhaps even more. I think i will bring in some larger amounts next time and make them available to forum members. Its a hell of a lot cheaper than the shop bought stuff. Let me know if you would be interested. Dave+Amy
but do the fish take to the freeze-dried stuff as they do to the frozen ones? I may be interested.... 8)

kiwiplymouth
but do the fish take to the freeze-dried stuff as they do to the frozen ones? I may be interested.... 8) My Siamese fighters, Angels, Barbs, and gourami didn't seem to notice the difference. I only feed it to the breeding pairs or as a treat in the community tanks. I haven't tried it in my growing on tanks as yet. My discus took a week or two to get used to it but have spawned 3 weeks after it was introduced ( this may be a coincidence) I find that that the only fish that really love tubifex worms are the gourami. kiwiplymouth
This may sound too coincidental to be true... but here goes. I just had a phone call from M.A.F. ( I didn't realise that they were still working at 7.30pm) They sent me a notice of detainment in regards to my second shipment of freeze dried bloodworm approx 3 week ago. We have been arguing about the detainment ever since even to the point that i agreed to have them irradiated at a cost of $100. The phone call tonight was to say that in the end they did not need to be irradiated and future shipments will be fine as long as me the importer and the exporter comply with a strict set of rules. The upshot of this is that i now how have little bit of surplus bloodworms. The first 5 (and only five) people to P.M. me with their address can have a free sample to judge for themselves as to whether these bloodworms are as good or better than frozen ones. kiwiplymouth
No More P.M'S Please. I'm in a good mood so 10 people get to try them. I don't want to send 10 P.M's so this is for the following people. helen2289, Olly, Chichld7, Stella, Imsmith, Livingart, Driver21, Mr T and Ira and Dave+Amy if you guys send me your address. I will send you all 2 or 3 heaped tablespoons of the freeze dried bloodworms next week, Each tablespoon will be roughly equivalent to a 100g pack of frozen bloodworms so only use small amounts per feed. I feed this dry to all my fish but i did soak it first for a few minutes for the first week when introducing it to my discus. It is also a good idea to soak it first if you want it to sink. I would appreciate it if you could all let me know what you thought of this stuff as it will help me decide whether i import a larger amount next time. Cheers

Cheers Just saw this thread @ Whetu - it's called a feeding ring. I used them for my goldfish but my tropicals don't understand it - well I tried and they sniffed around, grabbed the odd worm that poked through but that was it - what type of fish do you have? I hand-feed my fish frozen food, so I hold the cube and they bite from it - less mess, besides - I refuse to do daily water changes
lmsmith
thanks so much kiwiplymouth!!! Hopefully my fish can figure out what they are, and I can feed them these instead of frozen bloodworms
