OMG...it was really hot here today and even with the fans going tanks were getting really warm 80 with the fans. So I put ice cubes in baggies and put them in; but I also used gel ice pack, which I have used before. The gel pack sprung a leak! The back of the package said non-toxic but I called the company. Explained where I had the pack; and she said that it should not harm the fish that it is non-toxic to humans and animals. I went to their site on the net and saw that it contains "carboxy methylcellulose" well, the bottles do...can't find out re: the gel packs. PLEASE help...what should I do? This was the 29 gallon that I was having trouble with my platies and guppies scratching...I don't think I can do another water change as I just did one today. It's also time to feed them...should I?

 Is right! It is just so easy to take a fish to the vets  I wish I could help but I don't about this disease except from what I've seen here. Flagyl...that sounds, or should I say "reads" like one of the meds my son takes. Too bad we live so far apart...if I it is and I could I'd get it for you

I agree...test water. But was wondering...hen your son was chasing the fish, is it possible that this one was injured? Wish I could help...I just lost another fantail I know nothing of Melafix other than what I've seen here...but maybe if it was an injury during the chase this could help as Snowman said. What do others think?

WTM...how doyou test you tap water. Long ago I found a site that said how to do it...and I forget...don't you have to let the water sit for awhile before testing???? Thanks

Would the fern and moss remain on the driftwood only, or would it spread? Does it have to be cut? How would you get it growing on the driftwood? No plants in with cichlids...would this just be personal choice?

Absolutely...the people here a fantastic to help...and they just know so much I'm always asking something...and have tendency to be a worrier  okay...I AM A WORRIER! Computers are great...amazing how I'm going to the other side of the world to get help with my fishies...plus, even though I haven't met the people here...I still consider them my friends!

Hi Seahorses and welcome! 11 tanks....wow...so then, you have a separate room for your fishies...or just a huge house with them all over the place You must have tons of knowledge with all those tanks....YIPPEE! If your hubby goes around to buy your fish...then I'd say he has MTS too, but that he is in denial   Take care have fun! Don't forget to post pics!

Thanks folks! These 2 were 2 of the 3 that my son surprised me with. Perhaps, they were already ill when I got them...I don't know. The 3rd one Beauty seems to be doing ok...although, her tail fins are deformed...nothing major that I can tell...she seems to be doing okay...as are Puff and Sam. Beauty was the one I posted on that had one smaller fins turn red...but then it cleared on its own. Thanks again Snowman, I asked in the your post about your sick guppies...how are you making out...anymore losses? Forget I asked...you have updated

Hi Tony...and welcome! The people here and this site are just fantastic...great place! I am a newbie. Important: -once you get your tank all set up, leave it run before adding any fish -then you can add a couple of fishies to help in the cycling process, you'll find lots here on the cycling process (fish waste-ammonia-nitrites-nitrates) -DO NOT ADD too many fish too soon...doing so...causes problems that can be avoided by not doing this -test kits: pH, ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates (at least these 3) And...last but not least...don't hestitate to ask questions, especially of the folks here...they are always willing to help and are extremely funny, and kind! Take care and happy fishing...fish and tanks that is. Oh...and one more thing...MTS is an incurable disease     :-?

White spot and Ich are the one in the same. Was going through some forums...and you have to be careful using treatments when you have certain fishies, like loaches. So, those with more experience can guide you there. Stress can cause white spot. I would also think that poor water quality may cause it as well since that too would cause stress to the fish...but I'm not sure on that one...more experienced would know.

Hi Lyndyloo! I use test for pH, ammonia, & nitrites. Can't get nitrate test kit here. Had the chance a while back to get nitrate but the guy in the pet store told me I didn't need it only the above mentioned 3. Anyway, I'll get one next time I can. I think they are good for someone who's new to this hobby ME! Take care

Anybody...fishies are still scratching. Just the guppies and platies. There are still no visible signs of anything on them. Should I repeat the salt bath? How often can I do this (e.g. once a day for x number of days)? If I do the salt bath, should I also do small water changes for x number of days?

Another of my goldfish (Squirt) is now doing the same thing. I know that he too will die just like the other one. I checked my water the other night, everything was ok...well, the pH was between 7.2 and 7.6 could this have anything to do with it? I did a water change yesterday. I've been doing some reading on the net. Should I be doing smaller changes for the goldfish more often than once a week? I thought if the water parameters were ok then once a week is enough? I don't know what is happening...any ideas?

Hmmm...looks like a fantail! But the "hood" has me puzzled...I'm checking on the net to see if the fish that have the growths (hoods) start out small like this. But, then, how hold is he?

I had a case of white spot a couple of days after I bought my first fish. Keep your filter on but remove the carbon. I used a product called Ick Guard. I added the appropriate amount; 24 hours later did a 25% water change, treated again. It stated on the bottle to "not overdose". Now because I had checked on the net all treatments were to be repeated. So, to be on the safe side I e-mailed the company. Overdose would only happend if I didn't do water changes. They instructed me to: -add the treatment -24 hours later do water change -treat again -and so on until all the white spots were gone then treat one more day after the spots were gone Anyway, I was lucky that I caught early and I think it took 4 days of treatment.

Sorry MRSkz...I don't know about Betta's. There was a post here that has a website about betta's I don't if there is any info there, I'll see if I can find it. He doesn't have any scales protuding does he? Any signs of injury? So, those with more experience can help give some more info: water parameters? tankmates? feeding? tank size?, etc. Wish I could help

Thanks Jude I've been looking at somethings about parasites on the net. One article said that a salt bath may need to repeated. Waiting for opinions on this...I hope that is all I have to do!

Okay...at least a couple of the fish are still scratching! Haven't noticed yet if all 6 are still doing it but willing to bet they are Somethng I did notice...on one of the ornaments...they was a long hair stuck to it...not mine, as I have short hair...I have removed it, but is it possible that this could have been irritating the fish. But then, if that were the case, I guess they'd all be scratching. Also, just noticed that one of the guppies and one of the platies poo is long and fine-thread like...is this normal? I have never seen it like this before though. Where as at the same time one of the other platies was beside it and it's poo was short and thicker looking. What should I do now?
