  1. Chuck in a couple of dither fish. These show the others that it is safe to come out, and also gives the target fish something to think about when they have eggs or fry. They tend to protect them and not get bored and eat them. (eggs or fry) When the T/F see the dithers eating, they get jealous and come out to get their share. I feed trout pellets. I use danios for this, they are fast if chased, and also make a flashy show. What size was that tank?? Alan 104
  2. Luv the measurements DJ. I find it very easy to "see" them like that. Can actually visualize the stand with the tanks as well. Alan 104
  3. Woops, just got a letter from PC and he informed me that he did not write the article, just gave info on it. Did you know that PFK watch this site?? So I apologize to PFK for putting that over about the author of that article. He is prolly the best Rinbow fish breeder in the world too, he tells me that he is working on several species, not seen in England before, and is only having probs with one of them, but is confidant in cracking that one too.
  4. Get into killies and you'll definitely be getting more than one tank. I can promise you that. KKK Alan 104
  5. We keep a dump bucket in the laundry. Lined with a plastic liner, it is invaluable piece of equipment after a damaging EQ. (earthquake). Alan 104
  6. Incorporate a thermostat into the lead going to the light PJ. Saves power and keeps it at the correct heat. Good box for storing killie eggs in too for incubating, prior to hatching. Alan 104
  7. I completely disagree with this point. Even to say it is ridiculous. You say you buy from three differnt suppliers, but who says that the suppliers weren't supplied by the same source?? Also the use of breeding parents with siblings and siblings with siblings is always/often done for improving the colour, finnage, size, etc of guppies. It may be done, but it is done in a selected, chosen, purposeful way. Not to take fish from "local" suppliers is also wrong. You can see the conditions they were raised in, check the stock, and only have to buy once if not satisfied. You also don't have to pay GST or cartage on the item either. Probably pay the breeder less than the wholesalers price as well, but then sell them on using the price of the wholesalers as a benchmark. Don't say this isn't done, some of the members of the NZKA will vouch for this. They have had less stress and are more likely to survive than the "others". The local ones are use to the local water and not like the majority of the LFS ones that have come from importers, that have had them in sometimes very heavily medicated water, this helps keep them alive until sold onto the LFS and then onto the public. DON'T think this is slinging off or all crap. I use to know, and go, to a lot of importers Q stations and have seen it with my own eyes. One I recall, even employed a vet FULL TIME for the care and meds of the fishes. The tanks had the doses of the meds used and when. So give me home-grown fish as first choice any day. The importance of a quarantine tank can now be seen from the sad results of what has happened. Remember a $5 fish can kill thousands of dollars worth through one little omission. Think of it as a neccessary insurance. Cheap too. Alan 104
  8. Where are you from kavaman, are you a MAF officer????????? Alan 104
  9. Are you thinking of the 'gonowillie' on the livebearers?? If so, Tetras don't have them as they are egg scatterers in general. Fairly easy to sex them, tetras that is. The female is fatter with the eggs she is carrying. The Male is slim. Longitudinal lines, if they have them, on a female appear as tho the have a bend, males lines are straight. If there is a colour variation, the male will be the brighter of the two. Tetras prefer to be in schools and you'll find better association with 6 ot more per species. Alan 104

    cloudy water

and only rinse it with water from your tank!!! When was the last time you changed the carbon? It very quickly reaches it's UBD and is then only useful as an area for the bacteria to grow on. If using medications in your tank, carbon is used for removing them, so remember to remove carbon when you treat your tank, and to use the carbon when the treatment is finished. Alan 104
  12. The best thing is to cut your losses and throw it away. Of course the manufacturers will have all the "GOOD" hype written up about it. Once your filter is stabilised you will be fine as long as when you clean the filter you use water from the tank. I'm also another who doesn't like to add anything, except water, food, fish, and TLC, to a fish tank. Alan 104
  13. He had a shop just North of the bridge and on the right, almost impossible to catch the shop open. Township, (spp,) Ngarawhahia, and is now closed. Apparently he was a baker and worked in Auck., so had some travelling to do each day. Dave of Hamilton may be able to answer your question as to his whereabouts now tho. Alan 104
  14. If you were happy paying that price for it. No, You weren't ripped off. Not IMO anyway. What would you say if I told you that I got four for that? Rant and rave?? I bet !! But if I said "Have they got any more?? Go back and buy them they are normally $50." Would you go back to the LFS and say "Um, excuse me,I think you have made a mistake with the pricing of that fish I got off you. Do you want to check?" Bet ya wouldn't. So be happy that you have a lovely loach. By the way, welcome to the site, may even see you in chat one evening about 9ish Alan 104
  15. Could send down a truckload of Whakatane Sunshine. I hear it's pretty cold that way this time of year. Alan 104 PS I got killies if they want them, but I see the request is just for guppies. Sorry. Al
  16. Whakatane cans their spare sunshine and tourists lap it up Has a warning on it tho. "Do not open, the flash is dangerous to you eyes" Bloody OSH Alan 104
  17. You reacon not? What about when NZKA members take in fish who's parents cost $54 a pair. LFS buy the kids for $5 then resell for $15 plus plus. Just got an exporters list yesterday. Golden Wonders - Exporter- - - - .25c each - - LFS - - - $11 each The one all NZKA members are interested getting into NZ is the Nothobranchius rachovii - - - Exporters price - - - $3.80 - - - - LFS - - - the skies the limit if you do a similar %age mark up. But bet they are cose to $80 a pair, maybe more. - - OUCH - -. But we'd still buy them. Alan 104

    Whatcha Think??

During our talk, he has agreed to curtain the daylight out, maybe cut down on tank lighting too. I also told him not to use algae rid. No idea what he is feeding them. But he's our newest member so be kind to him when he comes in. He admits that the tank is very lightly planted. He is going to improve on it in the very near future. He's from Tauranga. Alan 104
  21. Just had a phone call from a young friend of mine. Wanted to know why his tank has gonegreen, and how to fix up an in water algae bloom He told me his tank was 1.500 x 600 x 700, or about 650 lts He has two pumps valued at $300 each and squirting out 1300/hr. He SAYS he has filled it up slowly with fish over the last 6 weeks YES Six weeks. This is what he has in it. 22. Just a query, are you sure water-ager removes chlomine from the water?? Yes with the chlorine, but uummmm?? AAN 104
  23. NOT fresh water use tank water Alan 104
  24. Jo1 you must have the biggest "fishroom" running. Have ppl to supply all the costs, (except the first setup), growing out tanks. On the pretext of cleaning the tank, checking the fish out and taking the best away and replace them with smaller fish. Almost forgot the plants, whew all those off cuts at $1 each, way-ta-go. MMMMMMMMM Wonder how that would go up here in the Bay?? Alan 104

    fishy tails

Get that filter back in there The airstone is literally just moving the water around Surely you can adjust the filter to have less turbulance?? What sort is it? I'm picking you are loosing your fish to ammonia in an uncycled tank. You'll be lucky if youdon't loose more too. Butif you do a 20% water change, keeping the new water to the tank temp., it will be a start. NO MORE FISH TILL THE FILTRATION IS SORTED and the tank is CYCLED PROPERLY. Alan 104
