  1. klaymann, what are alligator fish, taxonomical name please?? I can't find reference for them, but have seen that name bandied around, also noted that they are a cold water fish??????????? Just wondering. Thanks Alan 104
  2. PJ, remember that topping up NO SALT replacing water SALT Alan 104
  3. Alan with on ell replies. Infect with what. They have had a traumatic injury that MAY develop fungus which can be treated with methylene blue but otherwise just add some salt to the tank at a teaspoon / four litres. Dissolved first of course. The eye cavities will scar over and the fish will seem to have no adverse effcts. Why are the goldfish in a heated tank?? Conserve energy where possible and save money. Paradise don't mind the cold at all. Alan 104
  4. Go to here http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/previo ... sc&start=0 and have a look at the photo in the second post. Notice the front blue fish?? If you see them like this with those shrunken shoulders (???), give away any ideas that you can fatten it up. I wouldn't buy any fish from that tank with one that looked like that. Alan 104
  5. Wasting disease is also known as TB. If they have that you can just about kiss (don't do that) your fish goodbye. Separate from others as soon as noticed. Alan 104
  6. Where did they GONE to Darryl I'd have been interested in giving them a new home. Alan 104
  7. How acidic is the water? Looks like it could be starting to go rusty. Alan 104
  8. It would depend on how far the stump is back to. If it is back to the caudal base bone, then best it becomes fishfood. But if that bone hasn't been exposed, it should grow back in time, but normally without the colouration. Alan 104
  9. You can point ya finger at the Silver Dollars for the plant eating. They are lawn mowers in disguise. Try some shell grit in a small box filter, thet will slowly alter you pH. Welcome to the site, some of us go to the chatroom about 9ish most nights for some innane talking . We sometimes do discuss fishie subjects tho, depends what comes up. Alan 104
  10. When I separate them, I use three tanks. One from which I check the sexes, another for the boys, and the third for the girls. Any you aren't sure of stay in the first tank. If you see one with a black vent, - - female. An all silver belly, - - - male This can be done at a very young age, like in the first week. But keep and eye on the ones you have sorted to look for the reverse that you may have missed or made a mistake with. Keep your babies away from adult male guppies as they appear to get tiny tots pregnant just by looking at the young girls. You know what I mean. Alan 104
  11. Try and keep them where they'll be for your display. Doing it any other way means that they will have no show of being used to their new surroundings, and you'll need a photo to say, "These fish are in here, somewhere, sleeping. Do not disturb" Another thing is to just feed them a small amount so that they are real hungry and will come out to the front looking for food each time you go near their tank. Alan 104

  13. Do they glow green in the dark. Would make for a different tank appearance. Alan 104
  14. Yep I was thinking similarly - - - KA - BOOMMM - - - What is wrong with just boiling them, no fear of any explosions then. No fear of snails after that either. Alan 104

    Hi from Holland

Hi there Douwe, welcome to the site. I was chatting with Cas the other day and he told me about you being interested in the best fish types in the world. Killies. What species do you have and can get hold of. If there are too many doesn't matter. As you can see we have a Killi section in this forum. We only have about 20 species here in NZ, and we keep a real keen eye out for new arrivals (of killies) into NZ. We have several excellent breeders here that put their heart and soul into getting new species bred and shared around to members of the NZKA then out to the shops for the enjoyment of others. Where in NZ are you thinking, or should I say, planning on staying. Alan 104

  18. There is no positive cure for dropsy. I'm sorry, but keep your eyes open for a replacement. Is she in an isolation tank? If not, do it. Just float herin an icecream container. Alan 104
  19. Maybe we are the ones prepared to put our heads up over the parapet Caryl. There are also a lot more in here that give valuable info. Comes with the losses, ie, experiences. Alan 104

    1st killies

Hi there Werner, I have sent you an email. Those killies that have shown up in Auck., are the result of some of our breeders in the NZKA getting stuck in and breeding up lots, enough to supply shops with. Anybody buying them, let us know how you get on or any questions about them. Alan 104
  21. LOL BK He imports them from the North Island. The user of all the South Island power. Alan 104
  22. Excellent pic CB. Congrates on the hatching. Now comes the hard part, to get them to survive. Alan 104
  23. You don't need sacrifice fish for the process. A piece of steak, a shrimp, or anything in that line that will start rotting, and therefore give off ammonia will do. Don't use fatty pieces. Plants don't work. Alan 104
  24. Next time, IF there is a next time. Bag your fish, only need enuf water to cover the fish by an inch or two. But trap a lot of air into the bag. Points for this is that there is a lot of O for them,(keep the numbers down), and there is little, if any "sloshing" to traumatize the fish. The trip could have been don in 1/4 of the time, and being in bags, are easily floated then acclimatised to their new home. You will go thru life as a large learning curve. I'm afraid you just went thru one. Pity about the losses tho. Alan 104
  25. A small school of four or six. Alan 104
