    Fish Food

Brad, the terminology"fat-free" is when all the 'see-able' fat and everything else is removed from the heart, to leave just the red(looking)meat, ok, it isn't fatfree, but it appears so. We in the killie fraternity OFTEN use that for conditioning our fish and as a supplement food for the young fish. Alan 104

  10. I used to have a fav seasonal collection patch for mozzies. It was an effluent drain from a cowshed (it has since been demolished)that flowed to the edge of the property to a drain at the side of the road. The mozzies were so thick there, they had to queue up for breathing space. It was no sweat to get a cupful in a very, very short time. I was rather peeved when the farm was sold and the cowshed demolished. The only problem, if you could call it that, was my fish really conditioned out well on them. So I'd say rinse them off and feed them. Alan 104
  11. IMHO they are a fish that you take a photo of. Pin that to the tank and say "There are supposed to be 6 of these "mothers" in here, (I hope)" Alan 104

    Moving Tanks

Yep, there is an easy way. Go through the deal of buying it, and just before you hand over the cash, ask for their help, be prepared to pay for it though. They'll want to sell the tank and I'm sure that would work if you said "No help. No tank. I'll go and check out the other LFS" Also I use old safety straps from cars, (get them cheap at the wreckers), for the lifting of heavy tanks, and the grandchildrens skate boards make an ideal trolley Use planks or 12 x 1's to come up stairs, and once inside, use a large towel or a rug to slide it on the floor, remember to put the bottom of the rug to the base of the tank. I know not every house has them, but saw horses make an ideal resting place, before finally going onto the stand. Just some things that I use for moving some of my biggun's around on my own. Alan 104
  15. If the measurements are in Feet. Then divide the sum by 6.25, this gives you gallons. Then multiply by 4.52, this shpuld give you your literage. Alan 104
  16. Sheeze True?? That's wholesale price Don't tell them you want it for a fish tank though. I saw that done a few years ago when I went there with a fish club. They went MAD on the Fruit Salad gravel. When they found out it was for aquariums, the price at a later date doubled. Alan 104
  17. While we're in the Hamilton area. What has happened to Tirau Blues. Just checked their fish list, Woops  Nothing to check. They still going Rob?? Or someone that I know using them as a supplier. Nice people to visit too if you have some spare gas or passing through. Alan 104
  18. Beat me to it Mis. I was just reading down and was gunna say the same thing I think a bag of gravel should be about $40 But that's just guessing. Perhaps some of the locals can set that on the dot. Alan 104
  19. One thing that I noticed that sticks out like a burnt hole in a blanket. You didn't wash the gravel before you added it to the tank. What made the water cloudy instantly?? The dirt in the gravel. Ever considered how that gravel is picked up. Not carefully with a shovel, but with big machinery, they can leak so many contaminants into the gravel. I have had a bag of gravel with hydraulic fluid spilled in it. I always wash my gravel, then i put it into a big preserving pan and sterilizing it by boiling for an hour or so. Any contaminante can be picked up through these processes. I noticed the intials where you got the fish. That is one of my pet hates that they say this fish and that fish are cold water ones. Uh Uh I've had a go personally with them, but to no avail. Never mind, people will learn from experiances shared in here and by research on the net. Better luck next time with the G. Danios Alan 104
  20. I don't know how much reading of this forum you do. But i bet I have mentioned quarantine tanks more that twelve times. I was going to exaggerate and say hundreds. I am not the only one to mention them either. NO ONE SHOULD HAVE JUST ONE TANK. Maybe when the costs of replacing unneccessarily dieing fish, aquarist that don't quarantine will learn. Wait till ya wipe out a tank of discus. A Q tank is also a helluva lot cheaper to treat than the main tank. OK! That's it for now!! Alan 104
  21. Yes Mitch has got it. Go see Brian at Heapey Terrace. best place in hamilton. Only trouble is he takes Sunday and Monday off. So plan around that. Don't forget to tell him, if you do, that you belong to the FNZAS. There is also a Fish club in Hamilton, check the Club News. Alan 104
  22. You didn't suggest how you got it. Did you have any new additions just prior, about a week, before you noticed the ich?? Alan 104
  23. Temperature rise does not kill the parasite It does make it's lifecycle quicker tho and that is how they are killed when the cysts hatch and the smalls are in the water column in contact with the medication. With the temperature up high, watch your oxy levels, they drop at that temp. Alan 104

    Fish Food

Try feeding them fat free beef heart, or worms, or snails, the garden variety. There is heaps to feed them without resorting to fighters as fodder. This is the sort of things the Sigh-kia-atrist use, to say that the person so doing, is a potential murderer. mmmmmmmmm Alan 104
