  1. Well we are so well informed in a certain club, I don't even know where it is to be held this year. Where is it going to take place??
  2. Give them a week at this Paul then separate them and condition them for a week then back into it again. After the first week, go over the base systematically and syphon the gravel, the eggs being lighter will go thru to your container. Now make a bed of damp peat in a margie or a icecream container and place eggs digitally on the surface about 5 to 10 mm away from each other.(if they fungus they wont contaminate their neighbors). Make sure the lid is a tight fit, label them with their name, and the day you put them in the peat, then go mark your breeding calender on two months later, don't let the peat dry out, so check it weekly and moisten if necessary. Add water, and catch babies out in 24 hours.(after 2 mths incubation) Remove peat and remaining eggs, and replace into it's container and wait for a fortnight and rewet. This can be done until no more babies are seen. About three times. Boil peat to kill any eggs left and to sterilize it. Then feed the babies on BBS, should be ready for sale, passing on or breeding in about 2 months. Al

Don't get your fingers between the joint, and don't try to do it on your own.

That shop that's not far from you Jim has what I'd consider breeders in their front tank. But might be another story getting them off them. The females were very nicely conditioned and being escorted by frisky males.
  5. Use a syphon pipe of a big enough bore not to damage the roe.
  6. It is possible for the eggs to calcify at the vent, then without removal, she will be no good for breeding purposes.
  7. BlueandKim, please use the forum instead of PMing as I'm sure others would like to know too. Thanks

Don't know what ones you are interested in but this is the one for the clowns http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 818588.htm To do that. Go to the auction you are after. Right click in the Address bar, then select Copy. Go back to your post that you are doing to the Forum, Rigt click on a new line, then click Paste. Check the Preview, this will show you how it will show up on the boards, do any alterations in the White box and then click on Submit
  9. So wot's Animal Shack going to do without you?? Is Camp America something like those Boot Camps for scrots out in the Arizona desert??
  10. I'd suggest to you to take in a sample of the aforesaid worms with you to Hamilton and show it to Brian (Goldfishbowl) or make arrangements to link up with a Waikato Club member. One preferably with a camera so as we can see the REAL thing. Better still, join the local club. What fish do you have in the tank??
  11. Where is camp america Tom. Please don't say America I have never heard of it. How long will you be away for??

    Finally!

Lovely looking fish Afrikan, good luck with the raising of the fry.
  13. What were you doing under the bed Caryl to find out that it was dark??
  14. jolliolli, sorry to here you have fluke. Did you not wash your hands after working in the fish tank?? A habit that we all should get use to. Sorry, don't know where to get prazzi from
  15. Watch the worms don't go up ya nose SW
  16. Depending on the power of the suction of the filter, the net is a BAD thing as the fry can be sucked up into it and stick like flies to sticky paper, or else, because of their emergence size, will go straight thru all but the finest net, brineshrimp net comes to mind. Sponge is a much better suggestion. That is one of the reasons breeders use a sponge filter or a box filter with a fry tank.
  17. Can only be neon eggs. Prolly won't be successful with hatching with the above reason the cause. Now for the "Black-tank"
  18. Before you even contemplate the sealing, you have to find the reason a pond that for ages has been there, decides to crack. This has to be remedied, then the crack sealed by chiseling it wider and using an epoxy grout in the joint. This ia semi liquid and when set ia akso elastic to a degree, You'll have to make enquires as to the most suitable product. As suggested "Flintcote" could be used baut you will need seveal coats of this also. We also used a product called "Isinglas", not sure if I spelt that correctly, but it is a product that our forebears used for preserving eggs, brewers use it for clearing their wee drop, and we, as chippies, used it on cowshed floors to stop the milk from eating into the concrete, also need three coats or so, but it is very easy to apply as it is like water and a mop is a useful applicant. An easy way out is to use UV resistant ensilge stack polythene. It is black and after a month or two any ugly creases will not be able to be seen. Hope this gives you some ideas.
  19. How many fish are you contemplating putting into the tank? If my memory serves me correctly, there is no additives used in Chch water. Is this correct? If so, I would use two trios of WCMM with a sponge or box filter in the tank. That is a small number of fish and should cycle the tank as they go. As for the plants, why not plant them in a small pot?
  20. Several species of fish give of a mucus on the side of their bodies that the fry need for their first feedings. Discus is one and the Uarus that I have just succeeded with do also, there are others too.
  21. What does the pump run then?? Also if it is hung in the air so it is not touching the floor or a wall, you can quieten the sounds. The floor and/or wall act as a resonance area.
  22. If your air-pump is running your filter, then I'm afraid the answer is NO, don't turn off the pump. Invest in a quieter pump, and if you do, listen to it before you leave the shop, or else get some ear plugs. Sorry.

The advantages of belonging to a club. mmmmmmm!!!
  24. Which equates to about 18 cubic feet Or 6' x 2' x 1.5' Or 1.8m x ,.6m x .45m aquarium
  25. Cichlid7,I reacon it is a good idea to have polystyrene for ALL around the tank. It conserves heat to start with, so cutting down on the power bill, and also as you suggest, cuts down on ppl related stress. If you were to consider the area where the fish breed in the wild, you'll come to the conclusion very quickly that they don't have great glaring lights on them all day and a whole heap of movement around. Depends on if you are setting this tank up for breeding or for your viewing enjoyment as to how well you cover in your tank and the lighting. My Uarus have all sides covered when visitors are here, all covered including the top at night, and only two 2' flouros ,but with a lot of top cover floating indian fern. I do remember visiting a chinese gentleman who had his tanks (lots of them) in an under-house garage with no lights. To view them he gave us a torch. Also the water changes are critical for top offspring with some of the older breeders that I knew in Auck. doing 50% EACH day. They were dedicated, and admired by Jack Wattley when he came out to see them. Taking back with him on the return flight, Heckels from Don Handley; he said he considered them the best he had EVER seen, miles to cheap, and in fact to take them back, he left his clothes behind. You know what I mean so no smart a**** retorts to that
