    TFH Magazine

Well, well. Knock me over with a feather. Heaps of replies here. NOT Maybe no one has any. Understandable really. Well, stop looking (if you were), I've been successful from the states. I belong to AngieandAndrewsAquatics, and one of their members put me onto a nice lady who sent me a brand new one. Bubblewrapped and all for nothing. Zilch She signed herself as the TFH assistant editor. I was absolutely stoked to find it in my letter-box. My unbroken set of TFH mags., 24 years, continues. Thankyou TFH and Courtney Alan 104
  2. Where are you located?? Alan 104
  3. LB is on the right track. Guppies wouldn't survive an Auck. winter They will be gambusia, and are to be treated as a noxious fish. It is illegal to have them alive, sell, give, take, or transfer these beasties. Alan 104
  4. The power-board have meters that you can hire. Alan 104
  5. Don't forget to check it in mid-winter and base your costs on that. then it wont hurt too much. Alan 104
  6. Why? It means they are a little angel, not ANGLE either. Alan 104
  7. As far as water changes go, you can't do too many. As long as the replacement water has the same parameters, that is, aged. The bacteria is in the filtration area, it is when you clean the filters with tap or hot water, that you can run into probs. Use some of the tank water that you are changing, to clean them. I knew some discus breeders, in Auckland, who IMHO without a doubt, were the best discus breeders in NZ. They did 50% water changes per day! ! Their fish were so respected by a fella called "Watley" ( heard of him), who chucked out his personal baggage, to take back to the USA, his choice of fish from them. Funny thing too, he said that our prices for discus were giveaway-prices. Alan 104

The trouble with "tank dosing" is that it will wipe the good bacteria in the filter, also, if you have carbon in the filter, it will strip the methylene blue from the tank. Your choice buddy. Alan 104

Ball just be thankful if you get any eggs to hatch. This will prove to you that you do have a viablepair to start with. The system you are using I assume can't have methylene blue added to keep down the fungus?? If so, add some, but not too much, just make the water go pale blue. I have just hatched out some jewel cichlids after taking them from the parents. Hundreds of them. Alan 104
  10. As the baby liveberarers like to be near the surface, you can't go past riccia for a top cover plant for protection. Your hardest job will be getting some. Alan 104
  11. That the only killi?? They'll be okay in a community tank if you want. They aren't sure if they want to be a cichlid type spawn, or just drop them into a passing bush. An interesting fish tho, Shae, What do you mean they are exacty stunning killies. All killies are stunning, just that some are more so. So wash your mouth out with soap. Alan 104
  12. I'd go for a pair of peppered corys Brian, they are the cheapest, and are almost bomb-proof. A friend over-wintered some outside last year. If you are concerned that the corys aren't getting their share of the kai. Feed them after lights-out. Nothing wrong with a shelled cooked slightly squashed pea for the fish diet. What are you doing up so early?? I have an excuse, what's yours?? Alan 104
  13. NO The taddies go pop and they don't like doing that. Also there is a dearth of frogs, so how about trying to look after them.(frogs) Just had to growl at a young visitor about doing exactly the same thing. Save our FROGS. Starve a Frenchman. Alan 104

    Mussels?

I got mine for nothing from local lakes in the Rotorua area I used them when I spawned the "bitterling", a fish that has to have a mussel to spawn inside of. What Caryl says is correct too, keep an eye on them incase the do die, and whip them out smartly, otherwise you'll have a quick ammonia spike, resulting in deaths in your tank. Alan 104
  15. Try live, wriggling worms from ya lawn. Should go for them if he's hungry. Then you may be able to teach it to eat worm shaped pieces of beef heart, tie the heart to a string to make it life-like, giggle it. Good luck Alan 104
  16. Krib babies would be approx 1/3 the size of guppys. I use glass with a split airline for the edges, this stops the glass from jambing and also stops the babies getting thru. I''ve seen other fish "suck" the babies thru the little gaps. The water doesn't need to "flow". I have mine into gravel, over the top of an u/g filter. Luck with the kribs. Alan 104
  17. Oh well, if they get thru, you'll know for next time Huh?? Alan 104
  18. How have you divided the tank? Those babies will not be safe if/when they get thru to the guppies, they are tiny when first off to see the world, but it depends on how you have put the divider in of course. Alan 104
  19. It wouldn't survive down there with the frosts Even if ya could find it scalare Alan 104
  20. There is a public-health warning on those lakes at the moment. Algae bloom. Watch or listen to the news to see when the all clear is given. Alan 104
  21. Kyle, where have you checked? See if you can locate :- National Agriculture Security Service (NASS) Standard NASS Standard 154.02.06.01 Standard for the Supervision of Tropical Fish Quarantine Grounds in New Zealand I have a copy, and it may now need updating, in fact it is bound to have been updated, and if I followed the information in it, I could do a Q/S here, all things falling into place of course. Especially the money to build AND sustain it. Alan 104
