  1. In this weeks episode! - Will the red head find the love of her life? - How long will Sven be able to keep his affair hidden? Well, The red head has moved in with the 5 bratty teens and seems to be getting along with them fine. There seemed to be a big personality clash amongst all the girls when they were together. Pierre has also moved in with the red head recently and she has been showing a little interest in him. :bounce: Maybe there will be little wee red Pierres in the near future? In the nursury, 9 bazillion babies are growing up very nicely. Sven has his fins full trying to keep the wife from finding out about the other woman. He is also very busy trying to keep all the other fish in the tank down the other end and away from his corner. This can be a bit difficult when it is a large tank and there are a lot of fish who couldn't care less. Stay tuned! Next time on "Days of our bettas" What will the blonde get up to when Sven goes on a "business trip" with the brunette? Will the red head ever get laid? Will the teens discover puberty?
  2. I would imagine they wouldn't normally be a problem in a tank with bigger fish like Ira said but this was one of my fry tanks with fresh new babies in it. I have also heard that some of the planaria don't taste very nice. (i don't know how anyone would know that and i am not going to eat them to find out  )
  3. cheers for the tips! I think i have it sorted now. Another pair of angels laid yesterday so i am gonna be extra careful with them this time.
  4. I have a bit of a problem with these little flat worms. They have devoured practically a whole spawn of day old angel fry. Yes, i am sure it was them. A clean tank, nothing in it but a seasoned sponge filter and about 30-40 day old free swimming angel fry. I came down the next morning to find 8 fry. No bodies, no explaination. Stripped the tank. Put the remaining fry in another tank. Took the heater and filter out and found dozens of the little flat worms tucked in all the dark areas of the filter and heater, so i assume they were transfered with the equipment. And thus i probably have planaria in other tanks too. I have read the planaria will eat it if they can catch it and i can understand that they could catch young angels at night because they huddle in a corner in a pile to sleep. So now i am peeved  I am not sure where they came from and not sure how to get rid of them. I have read that they can regenerate a new critter from a 1/125 (or something) of a body part. I would rather not strip the tank down but if there is no other way then i guess so be it. Has anyone else had to deal with these nasties? What did you do?
  5. A while ago we ordered some through a LFS but when they turned up they were not Zebra's. Mind you most of the staff don't know much. We were also on the waiting list at another LFS but they never contacted us and when we went in they had apparently had some but sold them all.
  6. I have a few bettas in my various tanks and it is like an episode of Shortland Street with them all. I have 3 females. A blonde (cambodian), a red head (an extended red) and a brunette (multicolour) There are also 2 males. Sven is the burly strong man (plakat multicolour) and Pierre is a bit more of a sophisticated lad(steel blue veiltail). There also is the nursury with a couple of hundred babies from the blonde and Sven's latest escapade. In the flat across the hall are 5 teenagers (they don't know it but they were put up for adoption by the blonde at birth, and daddy passed away when they were very young ) Pierre lives in a bachelor pad by himself. He only recently moved in and has had both the redhead and the brunette come to stay Unfortunately he has no idea how to woo the ladies and has made an utter idiot of himself. He spent the whole day today with the wee brunette. They had a lovely date and she really liked him but when he got her into bed it all turned to custard. Perhapes i should get some "educational" material for him so he can learn how it is supposed to be done. He didn't have much luck with the redhead either but then no-one really has. She seems to have a phobia of males. Sven knew what he was doing but she really didn't want to have anything to do with him. Perhapes she doesn't like boys The blonde doesn't know it but Sven has been flirting with the brunette behind her back too! She would be devastated if she found out. Her first husband died not long after she had her first spawn and barely two weeks after she spawns with her second husband, he is flirting with another woman! Oh when will the dramas end!? stay tuned for another episode of *Days of our Bettas!*
  7. Hi, My hubby and i have been selling and breeding here and there for a bit now. at the moment we have a betta spawn, White cloud mountain minnows, Angel fry, and Severum babies which we are raising and 11 tanks running. We sell the occasional fish or two on trademe.
  8. Naughty Snail!! Hope your baby is gonna be ok.
  9. i wish it was that easy! No, i don't think that is allowed Anyone could get photos off the net and submit them then. The whole idea essentially is to prove that you have raised at least 10 baby fish born in your possession to 30 days old.
  10. hmmm.... Had thought of taking babies to club meetings to be verified but then as minchton said, i technically have to prove i still have mum and dad too. That gets a bit difficult when it comes to big cichlids. i might just do a type of "flier drop" to everyone in the Canterbury region asking if anyone would be able to help out.
  11. I am really sorry, i didn't really know where to post this and i am getting fustrated. I want to verify my breedings. I also want to follow all the rules. It is kind of a long story but i just want to find someone who can come and look at my baby fish when i need them to and they have to be a club member. And please be RELIABLE!!!
  12. I have had a Long fin eel in one of our tanks all year so far. Hubby went fishing with a friend and all they came back with was something to stick in a tank  Long fin eels are black charcoal colour and short fin eels are a green colour. what sort have you got? Our eel is a bit bigger than yours, he is about a foot long. I just popped him in one of our empty tanks at the time with the water he arrived with, topped his tank up with tap water and he has been fine all year. I keep the water level about 3 inches below the top of the tank and have good lids. We give him a water change just like all our other fish, feed him frozen shrimp and the odd other stuff (live fish, Freeze dried tubifex, pellet foods, white worms) I keep the eel by himself. He has a big mouth and a bigger appeitite. His tank is rather bare, Sand on the bottom, couple of rocks and a small vallsenaria (sp??) plantand indian fern and duck weed. And a crusty old sponge canister filter which i really should clean out  NO Heater. but he is inside the house so i think he has sat at room temperature all winter. I think the eel is great fun but one thing i never thought of when i put our one in a tank was his long term future. He is going to grow and need a bigger tank, Eels get big. Long fin eels get bigger than short fin eels. They can also live a long time. I have spent a bit of time thinking about what our eels future will be. Bares a thought.
  13. We haven't used cycle for well over a year and haven't had any problems with all the new tanks. If fact we don't believe in adding chemicals to the water unless it's a treatment and then we are hesitant. It seems to be an expensive exercise people insist on doing.
  14. HA HA! I went down to look at daddy fish this morning. He hasn't got time to blow bubbles anymore! His babies are hatching and he is busy blowing babies back into the nest. Woohoo!
  15. I wonder if there is a record for the worlds biggest bubble nest? Every time i go down to look at daddy fish his nest is bigger and bigger. It is covering the surface of half the tank and yes he does have eggs! :bounce: :bounce: He spawned with a pretty little cambodian red girl yesterday morning.
  16. what about big pieces of driftwood? how do you water log them? And you can't really stick a piece of driftwood nearly a meter long into a standard kitchen pot to boil  I have 2 big bits here that i wanna use but not sure how to prepare them.
  17. Lol Caryl! I have already seen proof that what has happened in the past has, is, and will affect the club. I am not too clear on what the history is but i know people who do not want to have anything to do with the club because of what happened in the past. We have about a dozen members. We are lucky if 4 of those members turn up each month to our meetings (me included). One of the other 3 members is keen to reviving the club but their busy life means that it is not a priority. I am a stay at home mum. I have lots of different means of getting in contact with people and visa versa. And i need something to do with my time The other 2 members have been members for a number of years and just seem to be broken spirited. (There in fishy body but not in fishy mind )) They are reliable enough to come to the meetings but that is about it. They just don't have the passion anymore. In regards to the existing club. I think i will slowly try to introduce structure to our meetings and small and steady improvements before i attempt to recruit new members.
  18. Not sure where to start!! Couple of points off the top of my head... 1- C.A.P.S has got a terrible reputation because of political club rubbish that happened YEARS ago. 2- I know of a few people who would be supportive of a new club but don't want to have anything to do with C.A.P.S. these people would be very valuable members (knowledgeable etc). 3- Sometimes things just can not be fixed . But i will still try, i am not going to give up on C.A.P.S yet. Christchurch is big enough. We might be able to have two clubs comfortably running!! I posted this as a reply to someone else in another forum... The Canterbury Aquarium and Pond Society. But due to technical rubbish and a lot of issues that occured many, many years ago, C.A.P.S has a *very* bad reputation. I am a member of C.A.P.S. One of a pityful handful of members. The reputation is letting the club down. Many fish people will not join because of the reputation. And the reputation is stopping a lot of people from joining. I have been advised to start a new club and let the old club do it's thing. We would love to just get everyone who is really enthusiastic and passionate about their fish together and have fun and learn at the same time.
  19. I would like to see how many people would be interested in getting together for an evening of *fishy* talk and possibly discuss starting up a new club. Pm me if you are interested or have any suggestions and we can all put our heads together and work out a time and place etc to meet up.
  20. Hi Alan, Congratulation on the babies! Are they just normal wee bristle nose or golden or albino? I just got some bristlenose babies too! And i have found that they love frozen peas! Take the shell off first and defrost them and chuck them in the tank. I am feeding about 6 individual peas a day to 12, 1 inch babies and they are also getting brineshrimp that the other fry in the tank don't eat. good luck and hope that helps.
  21. Loopy

    Aarrggghhhh

hmmm I have a similar problem with my severum. Got 2 week old fry in one tank with my few Emperor fry and gba's, wrigglers in another tank and mum and dad laid again yesterday  . I also have angel wrigglers, and another pair of angels laid last night. And still have a few zebra danios to get rid of, which share a tank with the young bettas that i am growing out. I have 9 tanks running at the moment and i wanted to cut down over winter to about 4.
  22. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/siamese-female-with-swollen-gills-pics-vt8142.html Have a read of this. My wee betta lived for a month and a half or so longer than i beleive she would have if i did nothing. I put her down in the end but perhapes if your fish has got dropsy you can try some of the things that were suggested to me. I am sorry that the pictures have gone awol I am not sure where they went. Try Caryls suggestions first, just incase Good luck with your special fish and keep us posted on how everything is going, Loopy
  23. ha! i am no help sorry but i just think they look really funny in a cute sort of way! Good luck with finding out what they are!
  24. I had a chat a while ago with an aquarium club member about treating fish for various nasties and we talked about different ways of getting treatments into the fish. i know the most common way to treat a fish is to just chuck your medication into the tank water and cross your fingers. There is the method of a making up a concentrated solution in a container and putting the fish in for a short amount of time. A more fiddly way is to take the fish out of the water and apply treatment. For open wounds and external ailments, treatment is dabbed on or i have heard of injecting under the skin. This is a lot more difficult than it sounds. Fish don't really like being out of the water and don't sit still when you ask them to. The thing that interested me and stuck in my mind when i had this discussion was the idea of getting medication inside a fish. I have thought about this and when i recently had one of my emperor tetra females start to get big fluffy white tufts all over her body and look a bit miserable i thought i would be a good opportunity to try out an idea i had. i soaked flake food in the treatment that i usually feed those fish. It probably is not an original idea but it was a new one for me. My theory was that providing the fish was in the mood to eat, it would be getting a better dose of the medication, and we humans take most medications orally. i just used a drop or two of melafix and a few drops of masterpet "spot off" to a dish of food. I also thought that i surely can't hurt the fish to eat a treatment that would be in their water. No one has died from it yet and the emperor girl has healed up really well and fast! so i am going to try this on anyone else that i see looking unwell just incase it was a fluke. I would be interested to hear of if anyone else tries this and how it works. And just other peoples methods of treating unwell fishys
  25. in my opinion.. it is the size of the tank that matters and how many hiding places there are. I think a betta would be fine in a tank with those sort of fish if they are in large tank (like 3 ft x 1.5ft x 1.5ft or larger) but i would not recommend putting all that lot in a 2ft x 1ft x 1ft. Think of it in people terms. get 10 people. 3 or 4 are not exactly friends. stick them all in a small room like your average living room size. chances are if they are left for a while to do their thing there will be a disagreement. take the same 10 people and stick them in a basket ball stadium with something to do for entertainment for example and leave them for a while and (hopefully) everyone will have enough space to be happy and stay away from those that they don't like too much. In thinking of this example though, i found it amusing to think of teenagers and drunken males in these situations
