  1. The main problem at the moment is we cant afford to have the thermostats on ALL THE TIME. They are NOT turning off at all. Am currently shuffling thermostats around to get the two Aqua Ones available for the big tank again. Our LFS said for the volume of water in the tank we needed two. My argument was the sold us the thermostat KNOWING the volume and even the sales rep isn't willing to come and have a look. If it states on the packet it is ok for 600l-1000l then one should be sufficient.
  2. Hi there. We have a 660l tank in which we are running two Jager thermostats. I cant remember the model numbers at mo. Both of these supposiveley quality thermostats were calibrated individually to the same temperature in a 250l tank. I should also mention that each one is rated for 600l-1000l. But they don't turn off or heat the water within 3C of target temperature. We were running two Aqua One 300w thermostats which were holding the temperature at a constant 28C and were operating normally. Any body have ideas???

    what platy?

Cn some one tell me how i would know if i have Xiphophorus variatus - Variatus platy OR Xiphophorus maculatus - Platy. i am not refering to any particular fish of mine i am just wondering what the main difference is. There must be something different between them both for there to be a name for each right?
  4. can digital photos be submited? i would love to help out but can't afford to spend lots of $$$ on films and developing them. nd would be handy if i could get the signature of the owner done in the same visit as taking the photo.
  5. all i can suggest is that the white dots could be infertile eggs. But that doesn't mean there aren't fertile ones in there too. Would baby fish be safe in your community tank or will there be a risk of them being eatten?
  6. Well i made a rather difficult decision to put down the wee siamese girl. I hated to do it as she had survived so well and for over a month the way she was but she showed no sign what so ever of recovering. i had no idea if what she had was contagious so i didn't want to put her back with anyone else and she was just taking up time, space, medication, etc.
  7. here is some random bits of info that may be of some help. -It's important to keep the eggs in a moist, but not wet environment. Never keep these eggs under water (this will drown the embryos)! Keep the temperature between 18 and 28°C (65-82°F). The higher the temperature, the faster the snails will hatch. -It's no problem to transfer the egg clutch to another location, as long as you are careful not cause too much damage. A damages clutch is more prone to infections and evaporation. The best way to move the eggs is by wetting the clutch, wait a few hours and then carefully move the clutch over the surface until it comes off. Obvious this method of most succesful on glass or other smooth surfaces. -The eggs at the surface probably won't deliver you many little snails when the air humidity is not optimal, but often the eggs deeper inside the clutch thrive well -After 2-4 weeks (depending on the species and the temperature, 14 days at 25°C in the case of Pomacea canaliculata) the first little snails should appear -If you don't see little snails after breaking a 4 weeks old clutch, it can be that the eggs aren't fertilised or that the air moisture was too low. -From the day they hatch, the young snails eat the same as their parents, so there is no need for special babysnail-food. Keep in mind, however, that it's often difficult for a young snail to obtain enough food in a completely clean tank. The long distances they need to walk in such case to reach the food could simply be too much. As a result of this, it's often easier to raise little apple snails in a tank with algae on the walls so the little snails have enough food (algae) withou travelling all around. -The young apple snails can stay in the same aquarium together with their parents without being eaten by them as long as there is enough food available. However, larger fish with preference for (little) snails can be a reason to keep the young ones in a separated aquarium until they have grown somewhat bigger.
  8. i am wondering if you have a male and female of the same species? from what i have gathered all the most common large aquarium snails are not hermaphradites (sp?). in other words you need a boy and a girl to have babies. so if you are getting babies from your black snail melanie perhapes you golden snail is a daddy?? and unfortunatly if you gave him to me it might mean you don't get any more little baby snails.
  9. i think there is another thread around here somewhere with some pretty graphic pictures of a pair of bettas "doing the deed". perhapes you could print them off or something and show them to your pair. he he "Play Betta"
  10. oh wow thank you! i would really love that. cheers
  11. oh i wish i could take the golden snail off your hands for you! i think they are pretty and fasinating! and i don't mind their appetite either. shame you live up in welly.
  12. He must have a good memory! he keeps vibrating his tail every time he sees me now! He looks REALLY peeved. Although i did actually take the shark off him. i thought -he got enough pleasure from catching the poor dude, i didn't want him to have the pleasure of eating him too. and i was really fond of the shark and wanted to give him a wee burial in the garden. Now i have a rather grumpy oscar who nearly 12 hours later still hasn't forgiven me for taking his "breakfast" away.
  13. Naa there is no way i could get rid of him. i am real peeved but i still love the dopey darn thing. A photo of the shark-eating-trouble-maker.
  14. i can sort of see the funny side of it now. i think the oscar realised he had stuffed up. The oscar is a smallish one (i think he has been rather stunted before i got him) and the shark was about half the length of the oscar. When i saw him he was sitting on the bottom of the tank with about a third of the tail end of the shark sticking out of his mouth and a look of "i really think i bit off more than i can chew" look in his eye. just annoying The oscar hasn't actually grown any since i got him and the shark was just a underfed little, about 6cm long weed when i got him and he had over doubled in size.
  15. Has anyone got any ideas about what i can do with a unpopular oscar? i usually love him to pieces but i am not too impressed with him at the moment.

  17. Waa!!! i got up this morning to find out that my big dopey %$@*% of an oscar had decided to chow down on my large rainbow shark that has been one of his tank mates for 2 years!
  18. Do you know what sort of snail it is? check out http://www.applesnail.net/ And let us know what you think.

    Livebearer wiki

i am really keen to help out with the wiki but i sorta get really lost! and i don't really know a whole heap about livebearers. If i can work out how to get around the wiki can i just add random fish etc? as long as they are relevant to the fish keeping hobby in nz?
  20. Hmm seems we have quite a good turn out! lots of addicts out there (call it what you want for you lot who are in denial..... ) Now.... how can we "support" each other? Anyone need another tank??

    Livebearer wiki

from what i have gathered of the wikipedia idea so far it looks like it might be a cool thing to do for tropical fish in general not just live bearers
