  4. We have just taken a heap of medication to slow down the effect of MTS. We are now down to 6 tanks (1250 liters) please note that this is not a cure but it suppresses our NEED to get more tanks untill we get our own fish room to live in and a house for the fish. I hate seeing 7 empty tanks :-(
  5. Oh dear. I had exactly the same thing happen to one of my silver dollars except it was half of a little ship. Oh and i have had a goldfish get stuck in the same ornament about 3 times. For some reason i gave the goldfish the benefit of the doubt and hoped he would learn.     ROFLMAO yeah right. That ornament is now stuffed with filter wool so NO-ONE can get in it now! Hope your dollar is getting better though. They are pretty tough fish!
  6. Well Howdy all again! Now that we seem to have all settled and gotten our Christmas and new years holidays and hoo harrs outta the way, we can get back into the swing of things! I have plotted and schemed and plan to have the next meeting of Totally Tanked on Saturday, 3rd of February at our house again. Address is 57A Hoon Hay road, I also will have a newsletter for you all too!! SO Any questions, newsletter requests or otherwise, give me and email or PM!
  7. eggs were gone when i got home from work just before. But i am not too worried really! still happy that they laid in the first place! :bounce: :bounce: i will just leave them in that tank and hope it is not another 2 years before till they lay again!
  8. I have a pair of whiptail catfish for about 2 years now. When i first got them them promptly laid and hatched out about 65 babies which lasted about a week before vanishing into thin water. I tried to get them to lay again but they never did. I gave up after a while and popped them in the community tank where they have been for the last probably year and a half (and have probably been breeding like guppies too but i never noticed). I never tried again because of the lack of tank space and just kinda lost hope. We have had a really bad time with catfish in general. We just can't seem to keep the darn things alive!! (well except for the whips) BUT early this morning i was woken by hubby saying we have whiptail eggs!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: I have recently had a bit of space so i thought i would try them again. So they were moved to a tank by themselves for a month or so and they did nothing. Last week i chucked them in a tank with a good spawn of angels and they laid!!! There are probably only about 8-10 eggs but if they make it to hatching i want every little tip, hint and piece of advice on how to feed and keep the darn things alive!!!! so PLEASE bombard me with info and advice!!!!
  9. Don't worry too much about the wee betta. He is probably feeling insecure and a bit shocked about his new surroundings and has decided the plants are a nice safe place to hide from all those other spooky fish. Remember he is still only a wee baby and had spent his whole life in a tank full of brothers and sisters which he used to bully! I suggest being really patient and gentle around him and when he has built his confidence up he will be a lot betta
  10. Hi there MLF! At the moment the babies are not quite big enough to sex especially for females. There are a few males standing out now though. A certain pet shop here in Chch has offered to buy the whole lot off me and grow them out and i have accepted their offer. I have not got the space to grow them out so it was a total blessing when i recieved the offer. (i was NEVER expecting to raise 550 fry so successfully) I am in the proccess of selecting my pick of the spawn and then they will all move to their new home.
  11. Hi i have a tank full of young bettas here mum and dad are the two fish at the top left and top center. Mum is the white one in the middle. All the babies are colouring up to be like dad but i think there are some long fin babies coming through. they are all too young to be sexed but will be cheaper than the pet shops. pm or email if interested.
  12. Ballistic just mentioned about the extarctor fan. Great idea but run it on a thermostat. You can get ones that plug in to the mains and the fan plugs into that. Then you can set it so the critical temp. I would recommend a decent one. The last cost me about $15 from a wholesaler. Mr Loopy
  13. Juss a reminder to everyone that we are having our big get together tomorrow night! I will apologise in advance as we will probably be incredibly disorganised. It is a bit difficult to plan a party when you have no idea how many guests are coming, what they are bringing and trying to keep it as low budget as possible etc. BUT we WILL try our best!
  14. CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Hope you have plenty of space and food for all those wee mouths your gonna have!!! Give daddy fish a wee pat on the back and a "welcome to fatherhood" for me.
  15. They don't look as impressive in that photo. That was taken when i was grading and sizing them out. they are split between 2 2ft tanks now and both tanks look way crowded still. i wish i knew how to get big spawns like that. I think it was just luck and a combination of a good pair of very fat healthy fish who were VERY keen to do the jiggy thing, A daddy fish who does a spectacular job looking after the kids and a good hatch rate. And mum has just always seemed to be really fat and full of eggs. That Crowntail boy is gorgeous!!!! *sigh* I really really really REALLY wish i could find a boy like that. or even better would be a girl! The LFS's keep getting in the same old boys and i have enough boys already. and there are never any females around
  16. This is one spawn of my bettas. They are 2 months old. I counted them when they were a month old and there was 550.
  17. those are some really beautiful fish! I love the cambodian boy, his colours are so rich!
  18. We have a little blue scoop which we found somewhere. I can't remember where it came from or what it was for but we worked out it held about 1 tablespoon of rock salt. So when we start a new batch of shrimp we just measure out the litre of water and 1 scoop of salt. Our most successful shrimp hatches are when we follow the instructions exactly as mentioned on the card that comes with the san fransisco bay shrimp. i have played around with a couple of different methods of hatching shrimp and so far i still have to swear by the coke bottle. Where would us fish keepers be without coke bottles???
  19. waaa! I don't want to have to cull my babies!!! they are all so cute and just starting to colour up!
  20. See linky if you not sure what i am refering to http://www.trademe.co.nz/Art/Art-supplies/auction-72377213.htm Is the glue for these things safe in aquariums? What are the glue sticks even made of? I wouldn't use them to seal an aquarium but i have used it to stick some little bits of polystyrene (sp?) to a coke bottle to make it float. (note: glue from glue gun gets hot enough to MELT coke bottle. Can result in rather peculiar looking bottles)
  21. Thanks folks! Good to hear that it is a normal abnormality I also wanna hear opinions on what to do with all my lazy babies. Can i find homes for them all? or will i have to cull? (don't really want to ) What if it is genetic?
  22. I have a huge spawn of bettas. They are about a month and a half old and just starting to colour up. I have noticed for a few weeks now that a good percentage of the babies just laze around the bottom of the tank and when they pop up to the surface, it is a bit of a struggle for them. They just don't seem to swim properly. I thought "i will just keep an eye on them for a while to see if they come right" but they haven't. Theories- They developed wrong (not really what i mean but don't know what i mean ) Their swim bladder is deformed? They are just lazy? Would like to hear what everyone has to say about this. Especially betta breeding pros!
  23. My advice for the slimy platys would be to give the tank a good water change. Then treat the affected fishys with some white spot cure in the hospital tank. Most shops have a white spot cure of some brand or another. They all pretty much have the same stuff in them and only cost a few dollars for a small bottle. treat for about 5 days. The sliminess can be due to shock or poor conditions. and yes secondary bacterial infections are very common. let us know how the patients get on. And you baby angel sounds adorable (in a naughty way) I have a couple of baby angels here and i can't get over just how darn CUTE they are!
  24. IF you wanna read up on angelfish genetics try this link http://www.theangelfishsociety.org/genetics.htm these are brilliant articles on angel genetics. I printed them off and put them in a clear file so i could read them in my own time and refer to them as required. Good luck with your breeding. Keep us posted on your progress!
  25. We would like to have "work shops" on various topics. Things like tank repairs, filter maintenance, quarantine setups, diseases, food for fry etc. Everything based on "this is a hobby and how can we do it on a budget". All support will be greatly appreciated. We may even beable to come up with accommodation for "out of towners". From the Loopy Hubby
