  1. I want to breed my 12 golden apple snails. Problem: i am about 90% sure i have 12 females. i have no males. i have slowly gathered up my snail collection by just getting 1 here or 2 there. i would have thought doing it that way i would surely find a boy or two along the way. My snails are all good sizes. range from ping pong balls to a tennis ball. i have been feeding them up (and my gosh they can pack it away , gluttons!!) i have done allsorts of tricks to encourage them just in case i have sexed them wrong. i am starting to get a bit peeved  Does anyone have any ideas? Does anyone have a proven breeding pair of snails or a guarenteed male that they would sell??
  2. what more do i need to say? For those folks who have been looking, there are a bunch of very pretty little girls in moorhouse. blues, reds and a couple of whites with red fins. and i don't know bettas too great but they *may* be crowns?? they have the extanded rays on their tails.
  3. thank you Caryl! please don't ask me to do it again. it was an utter fluke and i have no idea how i managed to get a photo like that. needless to say, i am pleased as punch about the photo AND the babies! The babies have hatched now and i am watching them like a hawk. i don't think i was this anxious when i had my own human children!!! Oh and for any one who is looking for female fighters, there are a bunch at animates moorhouse at the moment! but be quick! i might post a new thread about that.
  4. yay i took a couple of pics of my betta spawn and look what i could see when i blew up the pic! :bounce:
  5. How can i tell if my boy did the job properly? i have a beautiful nest and both fish spawned perfectly (from what i can tell) and i have eggs in the nest. but they are white and it has been 24 hours since the spawn. i know that with most fish if the eggs are white they are not fertile or have fungused but are bettas different?

    Oscars

How is that oscars eye looking? I was given a couple of young oscars to look after for a while which i nicknamed Brutus and Ethel. Ethel developed a popped out eye and we spent oodles on treatments for her (feeling guilty as they weren't ours, we were only babysitting) But she never came right. She completly lost her eye andit eventually killed her. In the mean time we have been given "custody" of Brutus and he now lives in our 2 meter long tank with our freaky oscar, Fat Head. Which also proves that sometimes you can introduce oscars to each other successfully! :bounce: Keep us updated about how your oscar gets on. Hopefully your one doesn't meet the same fate that Ethel did.
  13. Right cool, thank you everyone! i will NOT be sticking my fingers in richards tank. My partner went fishing out by taumutu, lake ellesmere way and came back with a 15 inch/35cm ish eel. I wanted a fire eel or the like but this dude is SOO cool! He is so graceful swimming round the tank and i have had him chowing down on mosquito larvae, drogonfly larvae, water boatmen, frozen shrimp, and last night he tried out a few dried fish foods!
  14. Do eels have teeth? Are they sharp teeth? Can i stick my finger in an eels mouth and come away with my finger still attached? Why do i have a fasination with eels mouths? Can i stop asking questions now? Been one of THOSE days.......... need a bit of nuttyness to make me feel better
  15. yeah i am not too worried about the salt either. It is the shells i am trying to avoid. Someone told me that if your fish eat the brine shrimp egg shells it can make them ill. I don't know if this is really true or not but i still don't want to take the risk.
  16. Howdy! i am having issues with my brine shrimp. I have tried twice now to hatch and feed out shrimp to my babies. They hatch fine etc. I have tried the packets method of siphoning out the shrimp but the tiniest bump and i end up getting the shells mixed up with the shrimp and tried straining through some fine mesh but the shells and the shrimp are practically the same size so i just end up with water in the bucket and everything else in my net. Has anyone got a different method? Maybe a "fool proof" method?? :-? i certainly feel a fool trying to fiddle round with itty bitty critters i can barely see just to have them be munched 2 seconds after they are fed out.
  17. i just thought i would give this post a boost for everyone else. It is neat to know that there is an alternative to gravel for your freshwater aquariums. I thought it would be neat to try some sand in one of our tanks and then felt really dopey when it got a lovely layer of crud on the top! Like caper mentioned earlier in this post, about siphoning i wasn't sure how to go about it and worried about sucking all my sand up in one water change! Now reading this post i have it sussed!!
  18. Can i put Glyceria fluitans and/or azolla rubra in a tropical aquaruim? i can find a bit of info about the azolla but nothing about the glyceria and what i have found so far hasn't been too clear about whether it is ok for aquaruims. Has anyone got a simple answer for me?
  19. Oh dear I am also so sorry for your losses. I felt like crying when i read your post. i couldn't imagine anything like that happening to us.

    Bacto-zym?

Tetra Bactozym Can some one tell me about this product please? i have read all the info on the package but it all seems too complex for me to understand. i am just wondering if anyone else has treid it before and what it is like.

    what platy?

thank you. i was just wondering. i like to know what i actually have in my tanks.
  22. i just cut off a slice about a centimeter thick and quarter it, stick it in a coffee mug and cover with tap water. microwave for, umm try about 40 seconds? or until it looks soft and cooked through. i drain it then pour a little tank water over it to cool it down and then throw it into the tank. does this help?
  23. Can i please have a reference for Botia Lohachata? i am all ready to send off everything except for this one little detail and none of my books have anything. Thank you
  24. i have realised that i don't neccesarily have M.T.S. I have a problem with "upgrading".
  25. Done that. They settle on 28C in 250l. The question now is why do the cheaper thermostats heat the water to 28C and turn on and off when required, whereas a thermostat with more than 5 times the amount of windings in the element cant do it. Its probably an on going thing now as I have tried basically everything I can think of apart from testing the electrical current in the water. Since we got the Jager I haven't been happy with them at all. Never buying that brand again. Thanks guys
