  1. Oh i forgot to add (i keep forgetting to say everything in the same post) pH 7.0 Nitrite 0 Ammonia 0ppm temperature 26
  2. Right got a couple more photos and when i compared them to the other ones (apart from the lighting difference) she has sort of "prickled out?".
  3. yeah i did add a bit of melafix to her little tank. might go and see if i can get any better photos of her. i just wish i had an idea whether i should be treating for a parasite, bacteria, or whatever and if i should be concerned about the other fish although no-one else is causing any concern so far.
  4. please? she still looks very unhappy and i don't want to lose her. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? i have looked through all my books and they haven't been any help.
  5. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be the cause? and ideas for treating?
  6. I noticed earlier today our new female siamese has got very swollen gills (or gill covers?). She isn't eating. Water tests come back fine. she is swimming ok. although she does seem a bit quieter than usual. she isn't gasping. I don't think it is dropsy 'cause it is only her gills that are sticking out. She is not taking a breath here,
  7. What do you use to make the water salty? is there a particular brand or product that you are supposed to use?
  8. Can someone please elaborate a bit about the different types of salt used in aquariums? i have a few bags of "tonic salt". is this what is used to turn a fresh water tank into a marine tank? what sort of salts are there? and what do they do? and what about brackish tanks? i am just confused about salt!
  9. yes, fish are stupid enough to swim into something they can't get out of. we had problems with a goldfish that kept wedging himself inside an ornament and he would have died numerous times if it wasn't for the fact we kept having to pull him out backwards by the tail. we ended up stuffing the ornament with filter wool to stop him from doing it.
  10. What are the "specifications" for a plakat? I have this lovely boy who is the daddy to two cute little babies. i was told he is a "round tail" but that is all i know about him.
  11. Definitely do the turn off the lights thing, how are you getting on with selling them? we have 10 silver dollars and really love them, they look so impressive in a school. i am really interested in perhapes getting your 2 as well.
  12. Ooo i like bettas too!! i have got 3 males and 1 female and 2 3 week old babies. i don't know what sort the 1st male i got is but he looks very old and plain now. I think he may be a veil tail? The 2nd male we got is a round tail bit he has short fins (looks like a female) and is black with iridecent(sp?) blue streaks and and rusty brown/orange fins. The 3rd male i have is a stunning crown tail male that i was given. He is a random mix of reds, blues and blacks. the female is white/pale yellow with almost rust red fins and she is the mummy to the two babies. The round tail is the daddy. I am so proud of my two babies they are the first betta babies i have had and they are kinda lucky to be alive since they were born in a well stocked community tank! I can't get over how fast they are growing!!
  13. well job is done and the poor snail still looks rather unhappy. we'll see how it looks tomorrow. i hope that the patch job works, i send about as much time watching the snails as i do watching all the rest of our fish.
  14. Wow i just ran a search on apple snails and found www.applesnail.net and have found this info i might go crack an egg and see what i can do to fix my snail!
  15. I found one of my apple snails had fallen out of the tank and cracked it shell it is still alive but is very unhappy. I put into my baby platy tank and it got hassled by the apples in there so now it is floating in a container by itself. when it was getting hassled (the other snails were crawling all over it and pushing it round) the crack has now become a holejust a bit smaller than a 5 cent piece. I am really quite fond of my apple snails and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions to do with treating it or i was wondering has anyone ever heard of "patching up" a snail?? what would you use??

    kuhli loaches

We have 10 kuhlis in a 200L tank that is heavily planted and has lots of hiding places. Some of our kuhlis get a pale greenish "sheen" to their tummys and look really fat and i alway just assume that they are the females. I think it makes sense if a female gets a green looking tummy and kuhlis apparently have green eggs?? Unfortunatly with a community tank, baby fish very rarely have a chance to survive long and they may be lucky if they even hatch!!
  18. was just looking in our community tank and saw our lone bronze cory looking a bit rough around the edges. i have moved it to the hospital tank but i don't really know what to do from there. i don't want to do anything without knowing what i am doing. i do know that catfish can be a bit sensitive to some medications and i haven't even tried to work out what is wrong yet anyway. i DID get a couple of pictures though. Can someone help please? this wee cory is one of our oldest fish. i can accept if there is no hope for it but i would like to try to help. Thank you!

    Golden Nuggets

there has been someone trying to sell a gold nugget pleco on trademe a couple of times. reserve was $199.00. they live in auckland. this is the auction number for one of their expired auctions #27598046. I saw a 2" little one of these down here in chch ages ago and i thought it was one of the cutest things i have ever seen!! love them just don't love the price.
  20. Wow it can take so long to get a good picture of a little fish that won't stay still!! It was very hard to get one of the male that showed his tail cause it is transparent and angles, light reflection blah blah etc.
  21. Nope your not the only ones. This is our very special boy. Was given him about 2 years ago. i didn't know anything about oscars and don't know anything about him. I have no idea what sort he is, how old he is or even if he is a 'he'!! He does have to be my favourite fish out of all we have.
  22. -shae -The link posted by HandS below yours has a couple of pictures of plume tail platies. As for the tiger platies, the ones i have got look nothing like those ones on that site. I have tried to take a picture of them but my camera is a very cheap, hopeless piece of junk. I will see if i can borrow a camera and get a better picture in the weekend. The 3 fish you see in the pic i bought from redwood aquatics as "tiger platies". i got 2 females and a male. The male (on the right) has a tail just like the ones pictured one the site handS posted. The females have about 4-5 dark apricot orange bands vertically along their body. I only ask cause i want to find out more about my fish and haven't had any luck finding out anything so far.
  23. Are there any good websites with details and pictures of all the different varieties of platies? Also is there such a thing as a "tiger platy" and "plume tail platy" or crosses between the two? are they common? ..... so many questions!!!!
  24. Hi scalare we have dealt with the guy you are refering to. He lives in hoon hay area and also advertises on trade me under the fish section somewhere. Trademe is how we found him. He is a private seller and has an Awesome setup. Huge variety of plants and i think he has heaps of guppys, platties for sale last i saw too. definetly worth checking out!!
  25. WOW what a beautiful picture! i have 4 babies at the moment, the biggest one is only half an inch long! i have never really been bothered looking at a picture to see what my babies will look like when they are bigger. i was given them from some friends who were given a whole heap, so i didn't see the parents, in fact i had never seen one before. I am VERY impressed.
