  1. Thank you for your support Warren. I am getting fantastic responses from locals so far. Everyone is eager and keen to come along. I hope the weather is gonna be good! I won't fit everyone in the house and I am beginning to wonder if our little back yard is gonna be big enough! I certainly won't have enough seats for everyone!!! I am really looking forward to it!! :bounce:
  2. Poly basically just smooths out the bumps. An added bonus is that it insulates the bottom of the tank. It isn't an item you must have but it is HIGHLY recommended. There is a poly called styroderm or more commonly blue and green foam. These are high density and aren't as forgiving as white foam. I do recommend insulating the back, sides and as much of the tank as possible. Use a glue gun to attatch the backing to the poly and the tank. Works far better than nails :-) This will reduce the power cost by a considerable amount if running heaters in the tank.
  3. We have strips about 15mm thick. The tank is 200x60x60cm and holds about 660l of high quality H2O. There is ALOT of tank base not tougcing anything. The strips are taped on three slabs of machined granite. No problems in the 12+ months its been running.
  4. We would be lucky to do a gravel vac 2 times a year in our main tanks. To be honest we used to have alot of losses when we did things the shop told us to when we first got fish and we lost alot of fish in that time. Now we hardly do anything in the tanks apart from upset the fish due to rearranging their furniture.
  5. I am overwhelmed at all the support and well wishes i have recieved for this new club. Thank you everyone. Most of the pet shops in Christchurch have hopefully got a flier displayed now. I hope this will become a fantastic long lasting adventure which we will all enjoy!!!
  6. I spent half the afternoon dropping off fliers to the eastern side of Christchurch today. What an ordeal!!! Make sure all you Chch folks look out for the fliers and if you don't see the little Canterbury betta you "betta" start asking for him! I will deliver the fliers to the western side tomorrow. So look out Scalare!! I will be lurking round the store at some stage in the afternoon.
  7. Hey... If anything "crumbles" then atleast we'll have dessert
  8. Hahahahaha!!!! lol! ridiculous expression isn't it!! I will assume everyone knows what i mean

    S.O.S !!

I have a spawn of Bettas which are free swimming today. I have got my infusoria bucket going but we didn't start it early enough so it is not ready. I am going to try the liquifry and a bit of water from the infusoria bucket anyway. I just hope the babies will get something good from it. My brine shrimp is too big to give to them yet. and i wanna give them the best start of course and they get that from wiggly foods. Has anyone got other suggestions for emergency baby foods? Has anyone locally got a good, clean infusoria bucket which we can use? Opinions and ideas welcome!

    wow

Those are some amazing plecos! They are flipping HUGE!!! I think i counted 18! Pretty cool tank Neons! silver dollars, discus, cories, and those plecos!!cool!
  13. Cheers. They won't stay sitting down in a group long enough to take a pic of all 9
  14. All our WCMM have the vivid yellow on their fins. That pic doesn't do them justice at all.
  15. Well i think we have all come to the conclusion that Athena is an Ares I don't think there is any doubt about Zeus  I am personally very jealous about Aphrodite. She is Beautiful!!! AND i saw a wee male at one of the LFS yesterday that looks just like her! i desperately wanna get him but i have got 2 boys already and really don't wanna have to find space for another boy. *sigh* oh well i will just continue to drool at the piccy of Aphrodite..... And i am pretty darn sure Hera is a little lady too. Congratulations on such a lovely little betta family and here is hoping you hear the flutter of little fins soon!
  16. That photo of the silver dollar has to be one of my all time favourite photos!! And i also am quite proud of the photo of my two swordtail boys.
  17. Watch your fish LOTS! I stare at my fish till my eyes go funny Observe their behaviours. Watch how the female and male interact at different times during the day. I also have never had much luck with keeping the female in a breeder trap (the "usual" method) I set my tank up and throw the fish in and early the next morning they do their business. I usually get up and go to check all the fish and find them already well into the whole process. And lots and lots of infusoria and brine shrimp. and watch your babies too.
  18. Occasionally i have a play with the camera and i have finally gotten around to loading my piccys up and resizing etc.... enjoy! Pierre
  19. Just so i can show off my babies too The little green blobs are the hydra and my babies are not quite 3 weeks old and doing very well :bounce:
  20. Oh hardy har ha Caryl!! Hmmm... Yes, the babies tanks are bare bottom. And we have been feeding oodles of brine shrimp to the wee gluttons. Linky to read more.....http://members.optushome.com.au/chelmon/Hydra.htm
  21. We spent ALL afternoon setting up a new tank and sorting the babies into it so we could clean the infested tank. Don't tell me i gotta do it AGAIN???!!! Arrgghh isn't there another way???? I am having an ongoing arguement with hubby about where they may have come from.
  22. Hi team. We have just moved our 500+ (yes we counted them) siamese bubbas to a new tank because we saw a strange looking plant type thingy going for the fish. It looks like a green anemone with about 6 feelers. When it contacts a fish it "grabs" then withdraws into its tube. They are very small being about 5mm with feelers out. Anyone have any ideas on what these are really called and how to kill them? Will try to take a pic as we have just noticed them in the new tank. They must have come in to it with the transfer water.
  23. Yes i have witnessed many successful embraces and they are really trying but it is like he just can't get around her enough And i will still watch out for fry, i just don't want to get my hopes up. I will let him practice as long as he wants
  24. For those who don't know who Pierre is... http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/betta-soap-opera-vt15373.html Pierre and the red head are try to spawn. I emphasize the "trying". :-? I can't see any faults in the female. She is co-operating well, head down, banded and very patient and willing. Golly i am just pleased that she is not acting terrified like she normally does :bounce: Pierre just doesn't seem to know how to embrace her. He seems half hearted about it but persistent and patient too. He seemed to have the same problem with the brunette when he was with her too. I thought maybe the brunette was a bit too big for him which is why i thought i would try the red girl. So is Pierre "broken" How do you teach a betta to embrace? At the moment they are still trying. I will leave them to practice till i go to bed and then seperate them. Pierre got really exhausted when trying to spawn with the brunette so i don't want that to happen again. Otherwise everything is going well. The red girl is actually dropping eggs everywhere which pierre is picking up and putting in the nest but i am not going to get excited about babies because i don't think they will be fertile. She seems to drop a bunch if it seems to be a better attempt at an ebrace. She can go into the trance and he can too but they just don't lock together at all. He doesn't seem to be able to get himself round her properly. Will be keen to hear thoughts and opinions!!!
  25. Good to hear blueboy is improving. I will get all my fishes to cross their fins for him.
