Well the angels are looking good! Their eyes have cleared up and they scoff down flake like crazy. Hope to get the tank repaired tomorrow.

Loopy's other half again. To top it all off the tank now has a crack in the bottom. Have just drained tank and relocated fish. Though not happy with the angels in one of our spare small tanks due to space. Will get a new base cut this week and completely remake it. It never rains it pours!!!!

Hey there Mystic! how are you? Yeah the tank is awful huh! we couldn't see the fish to catch them! I will go and take a photo of it now. Got a couple of big platies in the tank with the angels. Now the angels are following the platies round slowly instead of getting grumpy with each other.

Hi Guys. Soggy's other half here. Here is a link for the tank we are on about. Do an expired search for it. Auction Number: 60029751 It's looking good now though will do a few more water changes. We have seen the Angels having a go at each other so am wondering if it's worth putting a few Danios in as target fish? Cheers

well gravel has been washed and rinsed etc and put back into tank. (can't afford to rush out and buy new gravel atm) Filled tank with fresh water. Have rinsed out the filter. I can now see the heater at the back of the tank and the picture on the wall behind! :bounce: i will leave it to settle over the rest of the day

he he OOPS! :-? well i will keep fishing out my snails and keep an eye on the angels. and go and note this down in my book of "What NOT to do"

Hey Bill, In answer to your Q, I haven't used any of the existing water, all the water in the tank is fresh but i am thinking i should have rinsed the shingle perhapes? All the original water from the tank was disposed of and the shingle was taken out to lighten the tank for lifting. but i just chucked it back in when we got it back to our place. I am wondering if maybe that wasn't such a good idea. ATM i think i am more worried about the angels. they have had a busy day, being moved to a new home etc and i thionk the two red tail sharks were nasty bullies to them. i think the eyes are slowly starting to clear up on the angel.

Thank you for that. I was hoping the cloudy eyes might have been an enviroment or stess symptom. I had a severum who's eyes clouded up when i shifted her to a new tank once and they came right but i had never experienced it before so i was not sure. i am worried it is going to take ages to clear up this tank!! i can barely see a couple of inches into it! it is a 3ft by 18 inches by 17 inches. Oh and the snails are starting to come out of the shingle now and there are a LOT of them. i will fish them out as often as i can.

Hi just after some quick advice on what i can do for two very unhappy angelfish. Bought them and their tank off TM the other day and just moved everything today. tank has not had much maintenance done for a long time so water is very green but the wee pleco has kept algae down. tank occupants are 2 black veiltail Angels, 3 neons, 3 albino cories, 1 pleco, 1 penguin tetra and 2 redtail sharks. Both angels are now in the tank by themselves, everyone else has been put in other tanks, they are looking rather battered up fins are a bit raw and torn up and one of the angels has cloudy eyes. I would hate for these guys to give up and die as they are absolutely stunning fish! But they look really sad.

Hey JD! Great to see you here! It is Guardian_angels here from Ratclub If there is anything i can ever help with just let me know, even if it is just to borrow an emergency filter or heater, or small tank etc!

from what i know Platties and swordtails can crossbreed. But mollies can't breed with swordtails. They are a bit too different. Mollies are more closely related to guppies than swords but they can't interbreed either. most fish usually prefer their own species. i have a tank full of swords and all the boys usually have a prefered female. they probably know which is the lady they will have the best luck with! hope this helps!

oh yeah! hey tell us a bit about yourself too! for example: how old are you? and what made you decide to get some fish for pets? what else do you do to keep yourself busy? there are a lot of people on here so you are bound to have something in common with someone other that fish!

Hi jese and welcome! Great to meet another Christchurch fish fan. From what i can gather so far you have an awesome 60L tank with neons, a couple of clown loaches and some guppies. Do you have any other fish in your tank? What sort of stuff are you after? i may be able to help. i know a lot of people, some of them are not members of this forum. all depends on what you would like.

lol! Alan i could imagine a few people would do that.

I was out visiting my parents out mid canterbury when it snowed and the power went out for 2 days. I thank god for the fact that all my fish are in town and the likelyhood of a lasting powercut is minimal. They are all swimming around, oblivious to everything! Powercuts seem to be a delicate topic for some. But i thought it would be interesting to hear what you would do if you were faced with a powercut that was longer than an hour or two, especially in this chilly weather! Would you give all your fish a mini hot water bottle each? Would you even think about your fish and be too busy toasting marshmallows over the fire? How would the folks with their huge fish rooms handle everything? and what about airation? Perhapes it would be a good idea to think about an emergency plan for your fish? Our hobby depends on electricity so much! Have you thought about what you would do?

i have a male/female pair of whips and possibly another unknown sex whip soon and a group of 5 males and 5 female emperor tetras which i would like to breed. I want all advice and opinions, hints, tips and useful info to help me with the process. anything about water conditions, size of tank, blah blah etc I have some reading material which i will examine, but it is those secrets which they don't put in books which is what i wanna hear!

i am experimenting with different ways to help build up my snails calcium supply. i have to wait for a while to see if it makes much differnce. i have got a couple of turtle conditioning blocks and chucked them in the tank with the snails. and have been feeding them up well with a variety of foods

I have had this problem on and off for years, in many of the tanks that i have had platies in. Established tanks and new tanks. Never seems to effect other species of fish in the same tank. I treat them with parasite treatments as well as a few other treatments and they still eventually die. i mainly notice my females going really skinny. They go hollow in the stomache and will eventually just hover on the bottom of the tank until they die even though they used to be very fat, good breeders. Has anyone got any help/advise/ experience with anything like this?

Maybe that person didn't know that it is not really the best way to keep a wee fish. Not everyone instantly knows the "right" way to do something. You see pictures of bettas in pretty bowls, i think some hotel somewhere in the world use to have a bowl with a goldfish or betta in each suite as a feature. That person is not neccessarily doing anything wrong. They may just be uneducated or misinformed. Perhapes someone could gently explain that it may look pretty, but the fish would benefit from a bit of aeration and a filter, and maybe a heater and larger space. and explaining why these things are reccommended and what they actually do.

i am sorry i had it wrong it is not enviromental factors that can determine the sex ratio of apple snails. i found the bit that i read about ratios on applesnail.net. waiting for all the snails to come out and say hello! i have them all in a wee tank here beside the computer so i can compare them to the piccys! dang snails are SO slow.
-
It may be an improbability but not an impossibility. i have been to applesnail.net many times. i have photos clearly showing male and female differences from that site as a screensaver, So i have studied them well. i have also studied my snails fairly well. i am also fairly sure that all my snails are Pomacea canaliculata. i will be very happy for my snails to prove me wrong but as of yet they have not shown any breeding type behaviour despite my attempts to encourage them. 7 of my 14 snails are from one person and are very likely to be siblings. Apple snails can have broods which will be predominantly one sex, depending on enviromental factors (like crocodiles) then i got 4 more from another source, 1 off trademe, and 2 more just recently from a friend. i will how ever check what species they are and have a really good look at them this afternoon.

oh i discovered i can't count  i have 14 snails not 12. i forgot to count the latest 2 i think that makes it worse. Perhapes a male would be a bit daunted by the idea of having 14 girlfriends oh and thank you so much to the kind folks who have offered to keep an eye out for boys for me.

Oh cheers! thanks for the quick reply! if you can find a boy in your lot then i will gaurentee a home for him!! it is starting to drive me bonkers! One of the few critters that i actually am trying to breed rather than just doing it willy nilly!
