  1. Hey casper. Because the parents won't be in the tank for long (ie 1-2 days) We just don't run a filter in their tank. Feed them a good feed a bit before they go into the breeding tank and don't feed while they are in it. After they have spawned i just leave the tank for a week or two with only an air stone (and a heater as i have learnt  ) for the fry as i worry that changes in water quality might upset the eggs or fry. Then depending on how things have progressed over the week or two i will siphon out any gunk that has accumulated and top up with fresh water.
  2. Thank you Casper. I am very very happy with the turn out this month. :bounce: *~!Thank you everyone!!!~* :bounce: If we can get attendances like that every month or better we will definately have this club humming soon! :bounce: I do hope everyone enjoyed themselves tonight! And if you didn't let me know so we can do better next time!
  3. Thats ok fluffypants. These things do happen! At least you WANT to come along, that is a start! Been spending the morning tidying up the house a bit and rearranging the furniture to maximise seating. Hubby is doing a couple of water changes too. Argh I just remembered i was going to get some sausage rolls out of the freezer!! See you all soon!! :bounce:
  4. Forgive me for not understanding. I don't know which boxes to tick on the rego form. I want to do everything to do with the conference (the bus trip, all the dinners/meals, and conference itself. I just dont want to confuse anyone or miss anything by ticking the wrong one. (and also helps in working how much i have to pay! )
  5. Umm... Oh dear! All i can think of is quick, and easy to prepare! I will always have bread and tomato sauce available and can always spare a pot to chuck on the stove. The fire will be going for us so we can all be toasty warm! Perhapes a theme or idea could be "substantial finger-foods" ie: sausage rolls, cocktail sausages.... nibbly foods that once you have had a few you feel like you have still had a meal. Hopefully everyone doesn't head off and get a bag of savouries from Couplands  Oh yeah! and Be creative!
  6. got any water outside which might have bugs in it? or come round here tonight and i can give you a wee bit of dahnia for them to munch till you get some more brine shrimp to hatch. They should be fine ( i hope) till you get more shrimp if you can't make it though.
  7. Congrats! They do look very cool when they swarm like that! Have you got any brine shrimp started for them yet? Now that they are swimming they will be one hungry bunch of mouths!!
  8. hey i am only 24! Certainly don't feel it sometimes
  9. wow that is a very cool link you posted! Amazing pics! I wish i could take photos like that! But i know it takes the right equipment. *sigh*
  10. He he yeah! My oldest is starting to ask "whats that fishes name?" and she has her own fish, A "tiger barbie". Sam, Her little sister, one of her first words was "Ish"! Budding fish addicts!
  11. Well i assisted at least 2 aquarium world mags in their journey down south tonight! Feel jealous as i haven't even got mine yet! I expect it will be in the mail box tomorrow :bounce:
  12. Now Now You lot! I wasn't aware there was a competition running for who the youngest is! And besides, The longer you all argue about it the older you all get! Hi there carznkats, I thought it would have to have been a good reason for you not coming last meeting! Pot luck Sounds like a great idea Might have a "fry raising" theme. We can throw around ideas on how we all do it and have a good general discussion and perhapes share some of our secret methods?
  13. Shall i keep an eye out for them at work? I sort mail for the south canty districts at NZ Post.
  14. Milet, Come along to our meeting this weekend (see clubs section) and i could make your eyes bulge with all the advice and opinions i can give you about angels and breeding etc! You can see one of our pairs who are sulking cause i rearranged their furniture and the other 5 adults who i am trying to convince to pair up. Got a bunch of 2 -3 month old babies here too. And got books and experience to share too. I just got a book specific to angels and have some genetic info which is like my bible printed off the net. I am quite passionate about genetics of angels and will be more than happy to try and answer any questions you may have. Would be great to meet you of course !
  15. Yup! It's that time again! 5pm at 57A Hoon Hay Road on Saturday 5 May No Barbecues this time  Too cold of course! Not sure what to do instead though! Got any ideas? Could be a good meeting to discuss fry raising and stuff while we are having such a good run with breeding at the moment. (We have silver dollars, angels, blue danios, and WCMM fry at the moment!) And also come and we can see how much you can learn about freshwater puffers since we have got 3 new palembang puffers!
  16. The fry are about 1cm long from tip to tip. They seem huge compared to the danio and minnow fry we are used to seeing! They are just starting to get faint vertical black bars along their bodies too. They aren't as skittish now and seem to be much better at swimming. Very cute watching them gobble shrimp!
  17. Two days free swimming and as you can see by the fat little belly- They love their shrimp!
  18. Loopy

    This or that

oh LOST, totally obsessed with the program! hair brush or comb?
  19. Well I am just about to go and crack open the bottle of wine! :bounce: I have at least 10 silver dollar babies swimming around gobbling up brine shrimp! :bounce: I sat and watched them for a while this morning. They are so much better at controlling their throttle and fins! but still shoot randomly off like micro rockets! Hubby said last night that they would zoom around so fast that a couple shot out of the water about an inch! (memo-to-self *NEVER leave lid off*) We are very proud fish parents!
  20. check out this thread http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/fish-for-sale-in-chch-vt20535.html There is a picture of a male green severum. Note the markings on the face. The markings are the same with gold severum too but just lighter and gold.
  21. Got another picture for you all (whoever "you all" may be?!) Fry are still just scooting round the bottom of the tank but jeepers they can go fast! Makes it awfully difficult to get a photo of something so tiny and which is there one jiffy and not the next!
  22. I wish i knew. I could not find anything when i googled for info a while ago and haven't heard of anyone doing this before but that doesn't mean that it hasn't been done though. Would love to hear if anyone else has breed and raised Silver dollars before though!
  23. Thanks Alan. Yeah i am aware of the last fry having to be 30 days to qualify. And yes we do still have at least 10 fry as of this moment to show our breeding co-ordinator. But our breeding co-ordinator has already seen them plenty as they are me! I won't go into details about that but lets just say if you want something done right, do it yourself. The day the fry are officially free-swimming is the day i will e-mail Kevin to discuss verifying and such.
  24. Hey wilson! Our absolute ultimate goal is to verify a breeding of silver dollars but we are taking each day as it comes. A lot can happen in 30 days with young fish. I can barely contain myself with the prospect of getting them to free-swimming! let alone to 30 days! :bounce: The great thing is you don't have to have 10 fry from one spawn for a breed to be registered. It can be from multiple spawns from the same parents. So if you have a pair of convicts and they spawn 10 times and you only manage to raise one fry from each spawn to 30 days it can still count for registering as long as you have the correct paperwork and dates ( I think. Someone please correct me if i am mistaken ) Which is why i am already trying to tempt the pack of fat dollar gluttons to do the fishy hanky panky again so i can get some more eggs as "back-up".
  25. little guys are still going very well. don't think we have lost any for a day or two now so still have about 14. They still have a bit of yolk sac left but seem to be very close to free swimming. They zoom around the tank in short bursts lots and don't seem to mind a bit of light every now and then. Eyes have developed from just black dots to proper eyes with the tiny silvery ring and black pupil. They also have the tiniest little fins which they flutter occasionally (reminds me of a baby bird testing its wings when learning to fly) I put in a drop of very freshly hatched brine shrimp just before and one of the most mature dollar babies seemed to have a snap at a shrimp but got a bit carried away and ended up zooming off to the other end of the tank. Seems like using the throttle on your fins is a learnt thing that comes with age  But i don't think there will be a problem with food for them as they are quite big fry for a tetra i think, perhaps just a bit smaller than a angelfish wriggler. Still VERY excited about this whole process :bounce:
