But what about those who want to raise their fish from fry to breeding stage? isn't that MORE rewarding? To know you did the work from the moment those fry started looking for food and needing water changes and watching their progress and you did ALL the fry raising yourself instead of some fish farm overseas and then to have your well cared for fish spawn for you after all the work you put in; should be the biggest reward of all! In some cases with regards to buying fish from the LFS i flatly refuse to spend the high prices that are charged to compensate for someone else to raise a fish when i could do it and get the enjoyment of watching my own fish grow and develope. And just a note: The Krib fry that Wilson gave me so kindly have grown out wonderfully and a pair just spawned for the first time on friday night. Thanks Wilson!

I personally don't agree with your statement there tHEcONCH. i am not saying you are not entitled to your opinion just that i don't agree. I have wanted kribensis for a very long time but for some reason didn't want to pay the prices they go for at pet stores (and likewise for many other dwarf cichlids which i am very attracted to) Thus when Wilson very kindly offered me some day old fry from his constantly spawning krib pair i jumped at the chance. I gave those wee krib fry a chance that they possibly wouldn't have had if they stayed in their own tank with mummy and daddy and i have had the rewarding experience to grow up my own kribs. I am more attached to these guys than i could be from store bought fellas cause i know that i put the work into raising them. It can be just as rewarding to raise fry to breeding. You would just be starting the cycle at a different stage that is all. I can see this as being a bit like the chicken and egg story; which should come first? fry or adults? I doubt the killie club would work if everyone had that opinion. My rant is over.

I have 3 zebra danios here that *really* need a new home Might be able to find a couple more too. It has been getting to the desperate stage, Just been too lazy and forgetful to do anything about them. They are yours if you want them!

I don't suppose you have any of these for sale?? pm me if you do. i am not worried about size etc.

Have you got any other severums in the tank with it? My Male severum twitches his fins and shimmies/shakes when he is a bit peeved or flirting with his girlfriend. The bump on it's nose could be just another hint that it is a male as a lot of male cichlids develop slight bumps or lumps on their noses and foreheads as they mature. completely normal. How long has it been in the new tank and how old is it?

I have a 2 x 1 x 1 foot tank. It is not heavily planted, just has a few scraps of indian and java fern here and there and a few floating bits too. It has a chunk of wood in there and gravel and UGF. There are 2 young whiptail catfish a discus and 7 siamese fighters in there. 3 males and 4 females, yes 3 males, possibly 4 but i can never make up my mind about the ratio. They are some of the fattest healthiest bettas i think i have ever had and have perfect fins. There is no actual fighting at all in the tank. A bit of flaring every now and then but never anything dramatic or worth getting worried about. the fighters are a mix of a few siblings who have been moved and seperated in the past and a store bought fish too, so they haven't all been raised together. The tank has been set up for a couple of months now and never any problems. I just love telling fish people about this tank as we all know it goes against everything we are told about male fighters. The really really cool thing is i found 4 1cm betta fry in the tank the other day. :bounce: The lesson i hope everyone who reads this learns is that anything is possible and there is always an exception to every rule!!

Dixon I think you have "head and tail light" tetras there. Red eye tetras get about twice the size of H&T tetras and don't have the faint black spot and gold colour behind the gill plates.

November meeting of Chch Totally Tanked
Loopy replied to carznkats's topic in FNZAS & Afflilated Clubs
Loop's will be there. She work's nights and looks after kiddies till I get home and is normally VERY tired due to the lack of sleep she gets. I've been busy with my other hobby. She will see you there. By the way are you taking bets for the sea horse race? -
I used to work on an inshore fishing boat out of Greymouth and just before I got off it Talleys brought in the regulation that the Tuna had to be slurried. The boat looked rather funney with 4 chest freezers on the deck (it wasn't a big boat). We had a blast freezer which they then went into. The idea was good but sometimes the fish died on the deck due to catching too many :-) Mr L

Realistically what do humans actuallyknow about humane. Are we not the most destructive organism on the earth. Quick death is best. Mr L

I am so glad i had the honour of meeting Alan at the Conference this year. I can understand the impact he has had on so many lives. Such a beautiful and charming character. And what an asset he was to the killi club! Couldn't take "no" for an answer when recruiting for new members. Would i be out of line in posting a photo i have of Alan here? I have a lovely photo of him smiling that i would like to share but would like to check that it is ok first.

Wilson was getting a fantastic deal with those icecreams! one of those icecreams was worth about twice as much as what we were charging for a sausage. to the clever clogs. Faces to names First photo is Wilson to the right and i don't want to make any assumptions as to which one is Cars and which one is Katz but they are both there. One of them is just a head poking out above the "Chri" of the banner. I think she was chopping onions  Photo 2: Wilson with his "I've got ICECREAM!!" face on. and Katz (or Cars ) Photo 3 is the 4 of us CarsnKatz, Wilson, and Me (loopy) and the two loopy rugrats came to visit and see what mummy was up to. Photo 4 is the llamas that were on display for the afternoon. The handlers demonstrated a few times how they had only had 24 hours or something to get used to a halter and then he would lead them up the stairs and into the store for a walk around. Photo 4 is just showing what the area looked like over the other side of the car park. It looks quite quiet but that area in mid morning was fairly well crowded with people and pets.
