  1. I don't and have never line breed guppys but I do know that you are supposed to wait until your female are quit large 30 to 40mm, that way the female will be able to produce in the first drop (? 26-30 days) small numbers of large and healthy fry.
  2. there's gold nugget's available on trademe right now at a good price http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 157841.htm
  3. they get shipped like that from the commercial breader in tiny bags , it's all about protecting there fins from damage and each other
  4. HI PeneJane, what I do to harvest my bbs is to have a light either level or below the bottom of the bottle. if the air is removed (turned off) the bbs will settle to the bottom and you can put an air tube down to them and syphon them out into a hanky or better still have your air coming in to the upside down bottle from the cap, then turn off the air, bbs will settle and use the air line to syphon. I drill a 10mm hole in the cap and get a bung ( with hole in the middle ) from a hydroponices shop - push air line through middle if bung - all ready to go. I'm shipping some fish to Inver's next week and can pop in 1 already made up for you that you'll be able to copy , makes harvesting a breeze p.s it is best to hatch b/s between 25C and 28C, think you need to bump it up 2-4C , at 25C they will tank around 24 hours to hatch, 28C MUCH LESS.
  5. thats the one PENEJANE, good luck with it. oh oh, don't forget to let us know how well it works.
  6. HI Zedd and WECLOME My cats loved it when I had a planted tank in the lounge, it had Apyo. scheeli in it (killifish). Every morning when I let them in they rushed over to it and look longingly. p.s did I mention killifish jump
  7. YES as the tank has only just been set up it is likely the filters have not cycled properly for the number of fish. for got to ask Alan ( thanks suphew ), you said there are two pumps pumping twice the tanks volume but not what the filteration is ? or what % of water change/s are being done per week ? I suspect it's just a new tank - mixed with brite light and a high bio load, the tank just needs to be given time, twecked a little and sunlight(?) checked/stopped . the problem with green tanks other then you can't see the fish is if the alge dies off all at once, then you do have a BIG PROBLEM.
  8. Alan did he say were his tank was positioned? like close to a window etc what ever he does he should NOT use an alge kill tablet , as I know you are awear, the dead alge will pollut the water creating a bigger problem. what is he feeding his fish and how often? the alge may be masking water prob's as a green tank is often a clean tank just green( alge using nutriants that may other wise be a problem) there deffinatly looking for trouble adding that many fish in only 6 weeks for thou's how said the tank is over stocked etc - I don't agree compleatly, you can keep that many fish in that volume of water and they can be health BUTthe tank will never be in harmony , it will require lots of maintanance all the time - not much fun

    Dwarf Cichlids

My fav dwarf is the cockatoo Apisto, there body colour isn't much but the finage is so 8) , I've got 3 pairs set up at presant. 1 has about 24 2 week old bubs swimming around and she has layed well over 100 eggs on saturday, would like to remove the fry or eggs however I don't want to upset mum although she's really good natured - for a cichlid with eggs and fry
  10. a thought . hubby does not whant you to get another tank - can he biuld a hatch box - yes a light in a box will provied enough heat. but don't know what the wattage of light should be "fire"? if to big
  11. below 4C is for storage of the cysts before hatching - fridge is good. why can you not peg a bottle inside a tank for warmth?
  12. they may or may not hatch, never tryed to hatch then cold, and if they do will they hatch at once or slowly over time - if slowly over time, I would concider that a pain in the you know what. I hatch 4 teaspoons a day and I need them to be relyable(ready when I want them ). other wise your just playing and as I have said it'll be a pain ... . If you want to hatch b/s as 1 of your fish foods then surely you would want them on demand? don't you? If yes then you will need to hatch them between 24C and 28C, 16 to 24 hours to hatch. the hoter it is the quicker they will hatch.
  13. PENEJANE are you able to set up a small tank for your hatching containers. put a heater at desired temp in the tank problem fixed?
  14. I hope I have read your post wrong because uv lights are very dangerous for your health let alone the fish.
  15. yeah I like snowman's idea. when I have an alge problem I cure it with b/n, put in a female - pull her out and put here with a male / more b/n's
  16. Hi kribkrazy, you didn't say how small your little container is , if it is the size of the salald pots at a supermarket then there fine as long as you keep the water clean and free of rotting food. I wouldn't keep them in a container longer then a week before moving them on to a grow out tank . Albino gardneri are a good sized killi and need space to grow well. As to will they take microworms , yes they will and there a good food BUT not as good as bbs, have 2 setups if you have the room feed 1 microworms and the other bbs, you will see the differance quit quickly good luck the albino's are a lovely killifish red on white always stands out
  17. Have you checked nitates? although if your ph is ok it MAY not be that either.
  18. Marty, a 50lt tank would be enough for 4 fish (2 pairs ) with good filtation and reg water changes. The fry are just under half growen, but will need lots of food every day to grow to there full size 12cm. As there big eaters I would not use gravel. If you did it would be better to have them in a larger tank that could handle the unseen waste(hense better to have no gravel). they are carnavors, so anything meaty is good, good quality flake, beef heat, boodworms, medium garden worms, mozzy riglers, water fleas, small fish any thing you can think of. I've grown them fast so you really need to keep up with there needs or when in 10 months it comes time to breed them the females will not fill with eggs readly, making it harder to have a succesful spawn. don't know wether I'll be able to get the fish to Caryl but will try.
  19. thanks Paul, Yes I did have him , behind the door top shelf.
  20. No Marty, none have been sent down south. If you would like some I still have a few pairs left
  21. I hope you like thou's ugly looking fish of mine they are from the 500 egg batch in this topic, there some were around 8 weeks old. the last 200 odd fry hatched on the 12/06/05 they were around .7cm when hatched at 1 week they were 1cm at 2 weeks they were 1.5 cm, moved to larger tanks at 3 weeks they were 2.5 to 3 cm, graded at 4 weeks they were 3.5 to 4.5 cm I told you they grow fast!!
  22. just seeing if I have finaly figered out how to post a pic http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y187/sjoestedi/7b9b0910.jpg
  23. thanks for not telling them ,they may have put the price up. just got the last 7  . even if they are L. brichardis it's a good price.
  24. following on what blueandkim said you could try a reverse under gravel filter . what you do is divert SOME of the clean water from your canister filter DOWN your up pip. the perpose is more biofiltation .
