  1. Thats the point Alan , most of your tanks are small, I run u/g as well but I wouldn't use 1 on a tank bigger then 3ft. The vacc'ing becomes a "job" on a larger tank IMO, thats why a canister would be a better choice, not that it is a better filter just easyer to manage . As to puting a syphon down the air lift,I used to do that on the 3ft tank , it was a pain in the b..., imagine it would be worse on a LARGER tank
  2. HI Chicken, an undergravel will work if it's a big 1 . The problem is u/g's need to be cleaned and in a large tank it's a lot of work compared to a good canister filter. IMO anyway HEY whats with all these ozy's crossing the ditch to this site, isn't it normaly the other way around.

    new killies!!!

Devon, 2 things 1, there a bottom spawner Not a plant spawner, if it was a choose of peat or moss I would choose peat as it is a substrate = bottom spawner. 2, you can try and breed them, they will spawn and your female will lay eggs BUT your male probly does NOT have the juice, as I said your fish are young, I KNOW this as I'm the only person with a mature pair in the country. You can try, it wont hurt but don't expect any fry , sorry but hey nothin like a dumby run for the real thing in months to come . don't forget to feed the anything that will fit down there gob there hungery fish and growing

    new killies!!!

Yes it does the came from me , they are Fundulopanchax sjoestedti (sjoestedti = shoe-sted-i ).Also kown as "Blue gularis" and SJD. man do you have a brut there  for starters you can't breed them , the male is infertile until he is 8 to 10 months old and yours are about 3 or 4 months old .You can't buy a mature male as I have the only 1 and he's NOT FOR SALE  but don't worry keep growning them ( there very big eaters ) flake , white worms, garden worms and frozen blood worms will keep them growing well. They can get to 12cm long so yours would be around 1/2 way there. When they reach maturety they become very prolific, 500 + eggs in a week There a bottom spawner , I breed them by puting an 2lt ice cream container in there 50lt tank. The container had a fine layer of peat with a large bunch of spawning moss on top.The eggs were layed in the peat and moss. Ther eggs are large so are easy to find in the moss, a little tricky to find in the peat , but I was finding 100 + a day in the peat by running it between my fingers you quickly know when theres an eggs on you finger tips. hope this helps

    new killies!!!

 Devon unless you tell us what you have we don't know what to tell you as different species spawn in different ways. how ever standard tank conditions are a rule of thumb, that is 7 ph and medium to soft GH and temp between 21C and 24C. Can you give a discription of the killis you've bought, size colour fin shape and there are some pic's in this forum, there may be a pic here of your fish.
  7. $48.00 a pair is a fare price when you consider what they payed
  8. thats funny Hands, good luck growing the fry on.

  12. Hi my name is Stuart and I have a miner case of MTS . I have about 34 tanks, but it could be more   But it's getting worse, I'm slowly building a new fish foom that will have over 80 tanks. I have told my self that once the new room is finished I will revert my old fish room back into the spare bed room, so my friends have some were to stay if there in town Although some of the killis I keep, minnows, danio's etc like it a little cooler so I may just leave it as a fish room,do you think my friends would mind sleeping on the floor? PLEASE HELP ME I need more tanks
  13. yeah did someone mention about having a light directly over the tank? It attracts the phototopic( spelling ?) infusoria, the fry will gather under it to eat the unseen masses.
  14. I feed my baby minnows on microworm milk ( the liquid at top of culture ), it's full of yeast and bmworms the tiny fry loved it.
  15. mmm I don't wholely agree with what has been said for starters you don't have "cyclops", I have seen the real one's at Kelly R old place there the same size as large Daiphnia (3mm-4mm) . what you have is a form cyclops ,but not the big bruts that are really nasty. I have small cyclops/copepods in my tanks and have no problem breeding fish and raising fry( even when I breed a lot of tetras ). p.s bbs may seem like a hassel but I have both microworms and bbs, you simply can not compare them, bbs are that good at putting size on fry keep feeding microworms, there a good food for the fry to eat when theres no bbs in the tank.
  16. hey Mystic, If you borrow Jude's book be careful there are a few errors in it and it is old as Jude said PLAY IT SAFE, check everything with this site http://www.fishbase.org/search.php?lang=English good luck
  17. Hi Brenton, Pearlyred is right your tank is still cycling thats why your nitrite level is not 0. keep doing water changes 2 or 3 times a week and keep an eye on those nitrites, you will notice that as your nitrite levels drop your nitrate level will increase - this is normal and when your tank is cycled all readings should be 0 good luck
