That sounds like too much tilt, Caper! I used a couple of pieces of corregated cardboard so only a few mm's was enough to fix mine. I think my floor is a little tilted. I just went and measured the water level (to test my tilted floor theory). On one side it is 30 mm below the top of the tank and on the other it is only 26 mm. So my tank is 'leaning' towards the filter intake side even though it is on a flat surface. Perhaps your floors and tank have an even greater lean, Caper? MCT

I noticed that my son's little hang-on-the-back filter was doing this at the last water change. I have just gone and added a piece of cardboard and the problem appears solved. Thanks Blue. Hi Caper, what you are explaining is exactly what I did! MCT

Just a thought - do your test kits work in salt water? Yes they do. Good thought though Tanksman! MCT

Hi Beachcomber and welcome along. There are a few here that have or have had cold water marine tanks. I have seen a rockpool tank at a local school library and it looked great. I think the room had airconditioning which would have helped keep the temperature constant. Good luck with your tank. MCT

Update - the fish are all still happy and active. They all rushed to the front of the tank when I went to check on them this morning. It is too soon to tell whether the Melafix is helping with the fins. I tried Alan's idea with the methylene blue and found it rather tricky but it does seem to have helped the fungus. When I treated the first fish the liquid immediately surrounded the fish and I was concerned because Alan had said to avoid getting it into the gills so I put the fish straight back into the water. I did a little better with the other fish with fungus but it was jumping about so much I put it back in the tank too. I wasn't sure whether I had treated them long enough for the medication to have any effect (although one of them had a blue tinged fin ). Keeping fingers crossed now for them to heal up. MCT

Hi Caper I have only just got back from town where I was able to get some Melafix and some 'Aqua Blue' which is apparently the same as methylene blue. I will be busy reading the instructions and dosing the tank this afternoon. Thanks for the tip on using the methylene blue Alan; I will try that. The fish that were first affected are looking just the same but a couple of other fish have the tops of their dorsal fin missing without the fungus. All their other fins seem unaffected which seems strange. Could their be a bully in the tank? I thought that glowlight tetras were peaceful fish :-? (Water tests a couple of days ago showed no ammonia, no nitrites and trace nitrates). I'll let you know how things go. Thanks MCT

That's great news Imk! :bounce: Your image hasn't worked so have another go as I would love to see pictures. When do they get their 'angel' shape? MCT

Hi Jess and welcome along! Thanks for the info on location bruce_see. It sounds like a nice spot. Banks peninsula is very scenic. How far from Christchurch are you Jess? MCT

Thanks for the replies! I have maintained the salt at same level since the last post since I wasn't sure what else to do. The level I used was the same as the level mentioned in another post for medicinal purposes. I would have thought that 1 tsp per 20 litres wouldn't have done much and would be a 'tonic' dose? It would be good to have this clarified. The two fish with fin rot in the original post are looking exactly the same and are still active and eating. Obviously the salt hasn't helped so since it seems I have overdosed them I will dilute it down with water changes. Other developments in the tank are that another fish has the top of its dorsal fin missing but without the fluffy edge. Another fish developed swimming balance problems on Sunday evening so that it couldn't stay up the right way. I put it in quarantine but it died during the night . I will need to get some medicine specific for fin rot. What do others use? Thanks for your help. I want to get this sorted so that we can we can add other fish to the tank. MCT

Mine was happy and active through the winter in the goldfish tank which got down to 10 degrees for quite a while. MCT

Hi all I have finally set up my son’s tropical fish tank (600 x 300 x 400 mm). His filter sat in my daughter goldfish tank for about a month to get it established until we got back from our Christmas break and tests were showing no ammonia, no nitrite and about 5 mg/L nitrate at the last water change on Tuesday. We added 8 glowlight tetras almost three weeks ago (they are the only fish in the tank so far) and a couple of them seem to have fin rot on their dorsal fin. I presume that this is the result of the stress of being moved. The fins have ragged and slightly fluffy white edges. I have added some salt, some on Tuesday and some on Thursday (now up to about ½ tsp per litre) and the fin rot seems to be not getting any worse or any better. Both affected fish are still active and eating. Should I add more salt? Do I need to get some kind of medication? Thanks for your help MCT

Hi Skate I'm in Gisborne too and although the guy at the local fish shop is nice and is able to get anything I have wanted I don't trust him for advice on stocking my tanks. This is after he originally sold me two comets for a 13 litre tank! However we can't shop around since he is the only shop in town and we aren't exactly handy to any other centres. While your tank is cycling I would do partial water changes very frequently, perhaps every second day to help stop levels becoming toxic. Let us know what fish you have in the tank so that we can give you better advice. Things will settle down eventually, once your tank has cycled. Good luck MCT

Welcome along Skate! It's great to have another Gisborne person on board. I'm sure you'll get any help you need with your tank on this site. MCT

Looking at the goldfish poop page I refer to occasionally your description seems most like constipation which goldfish can be prone to. Try fasting the fish and then feeding peas. Your other fish will probably enjoy peas as well. http://www.kokosgoldfish.com/GoldfishPoop.html MCT

Welcome Kookie! Does everyone in Wainuiomata have fish tanks? :-? MCT

Welcome along Duncan! :bounce: The more I see pictures of people's discus the more I want my own tank of them. I would love to see shots of your tank. MCT

Great photos, Layton! There are some nicely laid out freshwater tanks but I can see why you were disappointed with the salt water ones. MCT -
Finding this site is a good start to fishkeeping. You will find lots of helpful information and advice by using the search function and asking questions. In regards to feeding your goldfish, the goldfish pellets should be a good base diet for your fish. If you have any fancy goldfish with round tummies I would recommend soaking the food in tank water before feeding them as taking in air with their food can cause these fish to become unbalanced in the water. With the number of fish you have in your tank I would keep feed time to one a day with one day a week without food. A fast day gives their stomachs a rest. Peas are usually loved by goldfish and help their digestion too - give these one day a week. They can eat most other fruits and veges too - cook them first if they are too hard. I regularly feed mine courgette, cucumber and orange. Happy fishkeeping MCT

Firstly, congratulations on your marriage! I can't advise you on medications for your fish but the water changes will fix the bad water quality at the root of the problem. I would be inclined to do daily partial water changes for a few days. Do you use a gravel vacuum? If so, that will help rid the tank of the extra food and waste. Best wishes MCT

I have seen turkey basters at Hammer Hardware as well. MCT -
Welcome along! It's always good to have another goldfish person on the forum. My daughter's two (a fantail and a calico telscope) are in a nice size tank 760 x 300 x 500 mm (about 100 litres). I like the black moor and oranda goldfish too. Best of luck with your tank. MCT

What a great idea, Alan!
