  1. However, water quality is good and have a good filtration system in place. Am a bit confused as to how the wee guy got it. Maybe he hit something in his tank? He is not worried by it and is eating normally so I guess it isnt really a problem. :-?
  2. Hello all! Have had my axo for about a year now. In the last month or so he has become 'blind' in one eye - or so it would seem. His eye has gone opaque. He doesnt seem worried about this and it doesnt hinder his movement, feeding etc. However I am just wondering if anyone else had experienced something like this before and if so is it blindness, or a fungi etc? Any help much appreciated! :bounce: Racheal
  3. Cosmo Aquarium Internal Filter 600F They are being advertised on TM at the moment. Very cheap, but am unsure if they are cheap $$$ or cheap as in CHEAP!
  4. But what is a box filter? And do I need a UGF? am wanting to change to sand.
  5. I currently have a filter of which brand I am unsure. But it is a noisy wee bugger and so am wanting to replace it with another quieter one. I have a 70cmX30cmX30cm tank which houses one axie in it. Any suggestions?
  6. Just been lookin around the site now. really good! I feed pedro every 2-3 days and he/she NEVER leaves any food! LOL! He is a piggy! Am doing up another big tank on a stand for him this weekend. Might get really big pebbles (as suggested in the website you gave) and keep using my UGF. I really like how clear it keeps the water with little work. I do water changes, but only about every three weeks. In between I add more fresh water as it evaporates. He/she is actually my sons which was brought for him after I kept killing all his goldfish (yes, I am really that bad at fishkeeping!) but I have a real soft spot for 'ole pedro. He is very unique and more 'cuddly' than a fish. Would love to see some pics of yours!
  7. So what do you use as filtration? Can you still use an UGF? My axo is only fairly young (under a year old) and is about 23cm long. He/she is a wild coloured one. The beasties in his/her tank are yellow and roundish (could be flea shaped? Too small to tell) but they are moving around like crazy! There are HEAPS of them. Cant see them when standing away from the tank but can when you are up close. Are they harmful? Also, do you have a way to sex axo's?
  8. There are strange things afoot in my axolotl tank. It is a smaller tank (45cm long and YES, I am getting a bigger one) and has a UGF. I feed my axo pellets and also the odd worm. I have noticed lately that there are small (very small - like dust size) wee yellow 'mites' in the water. There are hundreds of them and they are all moving around like mad. Pedro (my axo) doesnt seem worried about them, but I am. I am also guessing that even if I completely empty the tank and start afresh that I will still miss some and they will then multiply etc. Does anyone have any idea of what they are and how I can treat them?
  9. Thought I would post a pic of Pedro and his tank. I gave in today and did a big no no (yes, I know!) and entirely cleaned out his tank. But I did have to shift the tank so it needed emptying anyway. I added cycle to it so hopefully pedro will be ok. He seems none the worse. I added some rocks for him to climb over and also clumped his plants in the corner so to give him more walking space. Are tunnels a must for Axo's? He is such a socialable guy and likes to come up to the glass to see you and I dont really have space in this tank until I get a new tank for a tunnel. Anyway, what do you think? :bounce: http://202.21.128.20/photoserver/12/15957412_full.jpg
  10. :bounce: Over here!!!! Psssstttttt.... Can anyone tell me what sort of setup I should be getting for my axo please? Currently I have a small tank which is 35 cm long x 25 high x 35 wide. I am using an Under gravel Filter and also have a small air stone which is only JUST going as so not to stress him. I have just the one axo and he is now about 22 cms long and I think is too big for my current set up. I am doing regular water changes and also using Algae Rid, but my water seems to go green very quickly and my ornaments and plants are covered in what I assume to be algae? Its green and very slimy. Am new to axo's and if I am to be spending money on a new set up, would prefer to do it right. Help PLEASE???
  11. How do you take such clear pics?? Everytime I try I just get a blur!
  12. I have gotten one who is about 10 cms long (a baby). My tank is only small (35cms long) but I will be getting a larger one as he grows. I have only had him a few days and have just been feeding him cleaned worms from the garden as I am unsure of what else to feed him. Can I buy a dried food from the pet shop? Like what turtles eat? My five year old gets a kick out of feeding him, although he gives me the willy's when I have to do it! His name is Pedro (being mexican and all! ) and he is a dark brown/grey/black colour. I think it is what they call the wild colour? I have a book coming on Axolotl's but would like some advice on feeding in the mean time. I have an alligator which is attached to an airpump which snaps as the air is expelled from his mouth and Pedro thinks he is JUST the best! Think he may be trying to 'get jiggy with it'! Do they like plants added such as oxy weed? I was told that they were not very active, but Pedro is always walking around his tank and swimming etc. Does this mean he is unhappy or hungry??
  13. Can anyone tell me the in's and outs of keeping axolotyls? Do they smell? What do they eat? How hard are they to keep? I have currently got a small tank (30 litres) with two goldfish in it but I cannot keep it clean! I do water changes etc, and have done water tests etc, but cannot manage to keep a happy balance. So was thinking maybe it was time for a total change of thinking. I have three young children who would LOVE an axolotyl, but want to know a bit about them before I go ahead and get one. Do they need company? Do you still need an UGF? Do they live completely under water or do they need a platform like turtles? Any help would be most welcomed!
  14. I just find it hard to believe that this would be the problem. Is there such a thing as too much oxygen?? I know that if there wasnt enough the fish would float at the surface gasping for air. My fish arent doing that. They are floating to the surface on there sides and then swimming to the bottom. They do this over and over until they eventually die.
