  1. Q2 It is easier to have the tank off the floor. However you should be able to syphon water out until the level in your bucket reaches the level of the tank water I would think. MCT
  2. Welcome along! I look forward to hearing about your new tank! MCT
  3. One metre is the minimum distance necessary to keep furniture away from a fire. I would also check how hot the stand gets - you don't want that to slowly dry out and then start to burn! You will be able to feel how hot it gets with your hand and decide whether insulation is required. MCT
  4. How confident are you that the females are females? There have been threads on here where a 'female' betta turned out to be a male. There is a variety of betta where the male has smaller finnage - a Plakat. Have a look at this thread: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/boy-or-girl-vt7715.html MCT
  5. My son’s last remaining leopard fish (Shrek) has been living in my daughter’s goldfish tank for the past six months instead of by himself in the bowl that we started fish keeping with. Nick had decided that he wanted tropical fish instead of getting more leopard fish and we finally set his tank up after Christmas. Of course, Nick now wanted his fish back and so we transferred him across last week since the temperatures in the two tanks were about the same. (I’m glad I did as the temperature in the goldfish tank has now started to drop with the cooler autumn weather.) I’ve been keeping a close eye on him to see how he gets on with the glowlight tetras and the bristlenose catfish that are already in the tank. What I hadn’t thought about was how similar, apart from the orange stripe, glowlights are too female leopard fish. Shrek has been hovering around them looking very excited! :-? He seems to be most attracted to the female glowlights with their slightly rounded tummies. Fortunately, there are enough glowlights in the tank that no one seems to be getting stressed out. It’s very funny to watch though. The last fish to go in the tank will be a Betta. Here’s hoping that goes well. MCT
  6. What's the temperature in your tank at the moment? Last week I moved a leopard fish from a goldfish tank to a tropical tank and the temperatures in the two tanks were much the same. However, since then with this cooler weather the temp of the goldfish tank is starting to drop. You may need a heater to start the fish at the temperature they are used to in the shop and then slowly lower it if the temperature difference is too great. MCT
  7. Welcome along! The cost of marine scares me. The advice you get from the salties here will save you money though. Best wishes with your project. MCT
  8. Very nice! Is that a blue sheen I see in his body? MCT
  9. You can boil rocks or pour boiling water over them or soak them in bleach to kill anything on them. If you use bleach be sure to rinse them well afterwards. Also it is important that the rocks are safe for aquarium use so that they don't leach stuff into the water. Do you know what sort of rocks they are? MCT
  10. Is there anything else in their Aaron? If not you could lower the water level right down. Or try to partitian them off so that they are in a smaller area until they grow. What is the footprint of the tank? MCT
  11. I have already welcomed you in your other thread and I'm not from Wainuiomata  but just wanted to comment that my daughter was born on May 23. But then what's the chance of your baby being actually born on its due date! I would love to see some of your art if you can work out how to post photos! MCT
  12. I'd be inclined to use all the old media, since it hasn't actually deteriorated. It sounds like you will be adding new stuff anyway to fill it up. MCT

Welcome along! Discus are a beautiful fish! What size tank are you going to put them in? MCT

    Hi everyone

Welcome along, Andre Your tank does sound rather empty! How big is your rainbow shark? MCT
  16. It sounds to me like you have goldfish that prove just how big they can get given the best conditions for growth! Good luck with them. MCT
  17. I wouldn't put WCMM with single tail goldfish as they are very fast and would quickly become big enough to eat them. I have heard of them doing okay with slower moving goldfish though. I nearly put some in my daughters tank but we got red ramshorn snails instead. MCT
  18. Welcome along! Wow! Forty tanks, birds and TWO TODDLERS!!! I'm very impressed. Do your children like to 'help'? MCT
  19. Congratulations! :bounce: I'd love to see a photo of the dad too! MCT
  20. Welcome along! You sound like you have lots of fishy experience! How long have you been fish keeping and breeding? MCT
  21. Welcome along Vicki! I also hope you can sort things out with your seashorses. MCT
  22. I don't know much about this Caper except that some goldfish do become blind. They are usually the ones with the 'bulging-out' kinds of eyes though. What sort is this one? Is he managing to get something to eat? It is always a concern when goldfish aren't their usual selves at food time. They are such enthusiastic eaters! How exactly is he behaving? Is he excited at food time but just not making contact with the food or does he seem oblivious that the tank is being fed? MCT
  23. Also think about a bottom level fish like bristlenose catfish or cories. Sticking with the tried and true community fish to start with is a good idea. Have fun with your new tank and don't forget to be patient and add fish slowly! MCT
  24. Hi Evil I don't know much about some of those fish (like the angels) and their relationship to plants but that list sounds fairly well stocked to me. You also seem to have lots of bottoms dwelling fish (the bristlenose, the SAE, and the cories) and I am not sure that there is room for them all in a tank that size. Hopefully someone with more knowledge can advise you further. Have fun setting up your tank! MCT
  25. Congratulations! :bounce: And of course we are interested so do keep us updated. We wouldn't mind photos either MCT
