  1. Welcome along! Discus are beautiful fish! I look forward to reading progress reports as you stock your tank. MCT
  2. Welcome along! Sorry you had to leave your beautiful tanks behind. Hope you enjoy your time in NZ! MCT
  3. Your tank looks great, Walter. I love your rock cave. One suggestion - angle your heater more on the diagonal and nearer the bottom of the tank rather than being so straight up and down. This will reduce the chance of heated water rising straight up to the thermostat (turning the heater off prematurely) and will also give you more chance of hiding it behind plants. Hope everything continues to go well. MCT

    Hello all.

Welcome along, Shaun! I'm glad you found your way here and look forward to hearing a lot more from you. MCT
  5. Don't you just love wooden floors. Our bedrooms have wooden floors so I am fairly casual about water spills when I do changes on my children's tanks. 8) Hope fixing the tank goes well. MCT
  6. Welcome along Al! I too would love to see pictures of your discus. Do you have any non-discus tanks? MCT
  7. That's such a shame, Caper! Perhaps the stress of the move was too much for him. He got the best possible care while he was with you so don't blame yourself in any way. His health may have already been in doubt with the previous owners winding down their tank and perhaps not putting as much time into it. Take care MCT
  8. Hi reef_man I've seen some of your other posts over in the saltwater forum where you talk about being only 14 years old and not having much money. It makes me wonder how you are planning to undertake something like this. :-? http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/tank-change--vp134046.html#134046 MCT
  9. It nearly had a very short stay with you then! I'll look forward to the pics when you are able. How have you set the tank up? Filtration, planting, gravel etc? Has it got any tankmates? MCT
  10. Sounds like you are doing well. What size tank is it in? Any chance of some photos? MCT
  11. Sorry to hear that. Here's hoping it was an isolated case. MCT
  12. I like these reality tank shows (um threads). Hope it all goes well. That driftwood is fabulous! MCT
  13. Welcome along! Is the axolotl in your avatar your one? MCT
  14. Congratulations on the new tank, Caper! :bounce: Try and see if you can spot your filter here: http://www.tetra-fish.com/catalog/category.aspx?id=49 Do you know how long the filter was out of the tank for? I would think that since you have taken care of the media you would be fine to start putting fish in. You know to take things slowly so I don't need to tell you that. How big is the pleco? You might need another tank for him! MCT
  15. How's everything going with the fry, Penejane? MCT
  16. Welcome along! You seem to have jumped into the hobby headfirst. I'm sure if you are able to post pictures of your 'unknown' fish there will be someone here that can help with names. MCT
  17. Welcome along! I look forward to hearing more from you. Good luck with the bird breeding too! It would be great to see some photos of your birds in the off-topic section once you work out how to post pictures. MCT
  18. Welcome along! You have a lovely large tank. Just the one so far? MCT
  19. Sorry to hear about your fish I can't help with your plant and air line questions but wanted to comment about your nitrates. Your tank is obviously cycled since you have no ammonia or nitrites. It's great that you are able to give that information. I would be concerned if my nitrates were getting to 50 each week as it doesn't give you much lee way for times when you are busy and water changes are a little late. They may be high because of the trouble you have been having with your plants. Hopefully this will settle down once you work out what plants do well in your set up. I would recommend doing an extra couple of water changes to get the nitrates down (below 20?). After that continue to monitor the nitrates. If they continue to be high you may need to increase the size of your water changes each week. What proportion of the water do you change at the moment? MCT

I'm glad to hear you son is doing well, Caper. Sorry about little one though Take care of yourself and don't be hard on yourself you are a great fishkeeper! MCT
  23. Gonzo may be showing dominance behaviour if he is chasing the guppies and nudging them. I have a fantail that does this. It doesn't bother other goldfish much and the little leopard fish we had in there for a while soon worked out he was faster and could swim off to somewhere safe. I would keep an eye on it, but if there is no fin damage and the guppies aren't looking too stressed it will probably settle down. Getting another goldfish won't fix it if it is dominance behaviour and if I remember correctly your tank probably isn't big enough. Keep us updated! MCT
  24. Welcome along! Do you have any tanks already? That's a nice size tank you are looking for and I agree a canister filter would be good. MCT
  25. Welcome along, spongebob. Great name for a saltie! MCT
