As far as I was aware, fish aren't so sensitive to nitrate, so I don't see what's wrong with using a cannister filter/something similar and regular waterchanges?

    sweet

Sydney aquarium's one is like that, just a little bigger
  4. Okay.... Skimmer (Deltec MCE600 second hand) $650 Salt (25kg Red Sea) $130 Pumps (Streams - TS24 kit) $1200 Rock (live rock) $450 Sand (coral sand from jansens) $50 Refractometer $100 Testkits (salifert pH, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, calcium, phosphate) $180 Rowaphos $50 Kalk $40 Tank+Stand $1400 (aqua one R2 - 150 - 5' 100Gal tank) Lighting $900 (2x250W mH pendants, still need to buy the 2nd one) Total: $5150 Given you could get a tank+stand for cheaper, say $500, you're looking at around $4250 - nice estimate Now.. that's not including any livestock, I tend to leave that out of "setup" costs, since you can save for that whilst you watch your tank cycle/mature etc. I started with a couple of Seios ($240), and decided they just didn't flow enough for what I wanted (there were lots of dead spots etc), so I got the streams, knowing they'll handle a larger tank in future etc. For the record, the Seios were silent, started every time and never gave me any issues
  5. Hollywood do sell skimmers. From memory: Deltec MCE500 was around $900 Deltec MCE600 was around $1000-$1100 Both decent needlewheel hang on back skimmers.
  6. You can buy captive bred clownfish at Hollywoods in Auckland (both stores had em last time I was there). They're actually bred in New Zealand.
  7. So you want to start the cycle with the mollies in freshwater and then slowly build up the salinity?
  8. def join the NZKA, you'll get better fish (or eggs) and a much greater variety. Chances are you'll get your subs back in the savings you make on your first purchase
  9. I like things I can stick on the wall (and no, I'm not sticking a laptop on the wall!)
  10. Why, you ask? Because it has the full 2006 tide tables in it Cheers Steve for the heads-up a week or so ago.

    Coals spawning

I hear the red ones are more horny either way, awesome pic
  12. eggs are fun Nothing like the "instant fish, just add water" feeling
  13. Put the media in a bag, keeping it well wet, seal bag. You'll be fine
  14. If you're going to make claims like that (and I have no idea whether it's true or not), substantiating it would be a whole lot more useful than wishing her a good day. Just my thoughts anyway
  15. They're great too no leaky goodness.

    killies

I have killies in my community tank in with Guppies. It keeps the guppy population under control
  18. Tis funny when people see me adding top-off and ask why in hell I'm putting freshwater in a saltwater tank
  19. It's in, fish and corals still looking happy I have sore arms though 8)
  20. Okay, just got home with four 20L buckets of nice crystal clear saltwater. So... do I need to let it sit for a while/day/arbitary period of time - or can I use it pretty much straight away?
  21. More pics! My tank.. slowly settling down etc. I am planning a hood for it to replace the ghetto light mounting, and also there is another 250W metal halide on the way (in a few paydays ) so the full tank is covered
  22. I've got one that's almost identical. Needs a new bulb for saltwater use (and probably freshwater depending on what's in it) but it's a damm good price
  23. Guaranteed on the more expensive.. they're bound to run over the road, get em, then sell em at a markup (fair enough too )
