Green chromis, gf really wants one, and cheap I also really like their colours, so it's a fish I want to keep, not just a "get it out of the tank when I'm sure I won't kill other things" fish Not to mention unless you have a trap they're near impossible to catch
  2. I used ASW to fill the tank initially, going to do a waterchange this weekend, and I'm almost tempted to go find some NSW to do it with. Given I'm Auckland CBD I'm sure the tapwater isn't the best (HAH) for going straight into the tank, it does have 0 Nitrates and Phosphates which is a plus. Sometime in the future (oi petplanet!) I'll hopefully get a RO/DI unit - that way I know I'm not putting things into the tank that I don't know about.

I could except I would have to kill you (otherwise known as: I have no clue and am searching the net for good ideas lol)

Livestockwise.. I have a heap of mushrooms, and a finger leather frag, all seem to be doing really well (well.. I can't really tell, but they're opening every day and waving in the current etc). Parameters have been nice and stable this week (well up till last time I tested which was tues), will be testing again this weekend and possibly considering being naughty and adding something that swims.

Why not? I didn't particularily want to go nuts on the stand for the tank to fit one in underneath (would have required some fun DIY remodeling), I also felt I had sufficient water volume (nearly 400L) to maintain stable parameters without too much trouble, and I don't mind the equipment in the tank too much. If I owned my own house, and wasn't renting, it would be a different story and I probably would be quite the diy plumber (or not ) right now. Purely trying to keep it simple at the mo, get the hang of what I'm doing etc. Only downside I've found of late is that I'm getting a build up of organics on the surface of the water because I have no overflow, so trying to work out some cunning way to get around that.

Deltec MCE600, hangs on the back of the tank (I have no sump)
  7. You might also want to mention you generally use NSW, and therefore have less of a need

I paid $15/kg for it. After the skimmer, the LR was my next most expensive purchase (and you should have heard the hassles from non-fish friends... "you're spending WHAT on ROCK?????" hehehe)

My tank has 35-40kg of rock in it (if you want something to compare with). I was considering getting some base rock to add to it, but I'm still not 100% sure on that, kinda like it the way it is
  10. Thanks wasp Was chatting to cookie extreme tonight and he said similar things about cyano, maybe "unsightly" would have been a better word for me to use There are definitely a lot of the bubbles rising to the surface, it's fun to watch (heh, I'm such a noob 8) ). Will do some water tests tomorrow as well to see where things are, it's been a few days.
  11. Pies: where to get the 1 / 1/2 micron block filter bits?
  12. explanation? I know what cyano is, and that it's undesirable.. but a little more detail would be good
  13. Some of my rock, and areas on my sand (1" deep max) appear to be almost fizzing, with lil bubbles that occasionally rise to the surface. I'm guessing this might be nitrogen gas being released at the end of the nitrogen cycle?
  14. "Not sure if they are fluro or not. Brian should know" (for those who speak english)
  15. That's really not going to help :-? What kind of lights? Incandescant, Flourescent, Metal Halide, Candles? I guess you couldn't use candles on an electronic timer
  16. What are the lights?
  17. We ran 802.11b over about 2km here in central auckland for about 5 months, from one end (pointing at the skytowerish) we picked up 35 other networks and performance was horrible to say the least Changed to 802.11a, can't see anyone else and it's solid as
  18. From a box with 100Mbit, located in Auckland, pinging my home connection: 64 bytes from 203-173-161-189.bliink.ihug.co.nz (203.173.161.189): icmp_seq=1 ttl=59 time=51.4 ms I was on xtra, got the same ping times. Where does the magical 30ms come from?
  19. Pedant Everyone knows "mobile" only means around Auckland.. there isn't anywhere else in NZ anyway is there? 8)
  20. Heh, I was very tempted, would need to put a wide-angle lens infront of the webcam though. It'll def be hard up against the glass, so there's no reflection etc.
  21. Heh, do it I have a webcam here, just need to mount it somewhere so it gives a half-decent picture, was purchased for that exact reason hehe
  22. Woosh is only really good if you're on the road and need mobile internet. Latency sucks (200+ms pings), bandwidth isn't that great, and connection reliability isn't 100%. If you need internet from the back of the car or whatever it's fantastic because you can look past that stuff, but otherwise you'll find it irritating.
  23. Yerp... with lappy on couch I can still push >10Mbit to local machines, way better than wires for convenience
  24. hahahahhaha yes, quite sure there's no cat There's a lid on the tank, but it leaves the back inch or two open.
  25. Just checked the baby b/n tank, found 8 of em on the floor.. They had even survived the 1.2m fall to the ground, and gone in search of urm.. something. doh! :-?
