I have a 200 litre drum that feeds pure tap water, untreated, unaerated directly into my 1200LItre and my 600litre. i have been doing this for 3 years now, maybe more. i first tried it out with one tank and no adverse effect. My resevoir is the okura resevoir by east coast road, best check 'watercare' for the test specs on your supply, they will have it availab eand do regular tests, you can see that water is usually very good, but if you are from rural perhaps its different. maybe try a small tank - with some tetras, goldfish, bns, and use pure tap water direct..... i bet you will be pleasantly suprised that you can save money on water agers

i hope that there will be mutations... im sure there will be, its not uncommon for mutations to occur. when they do, that cant be stopped, and there you have it, we have strains. i currently have a leopare gecko with very large dots, almost disappearing dots. bred right, the dots can be bred out perhaps. who knows.

I perfer a slower 'trickle' set up, so its always replacing water through out the day, so no sudden changes in water parameters including temperature, and this way you have one less tank to heat and one less tank to lose heat and spend power. what i do is have a tank with cold water - then use that cold water straight into the tank but the flow is so low that the tank temp doesnt change, thsi way you only use the heaters in your tank, but that requires an overflow to drain the water. but i wouldnt worry about water going stagnant

i wonder when someone will breed albino or blizzard leopards in nz
-
yes i have a mix of that an the black ones you get on TM and HFF. they all float, funny some of them dont float though wonder why, 1 out of ten sink haha, but with a jet moving it around, it constsnatly moves and bounces anyhow, so same effect. just trialling a chamber on my sump, eventually when my monster tank is up, im gonna use all my ceramic media into a wet/dry trickle system, and the entire sump will be turned into a high flow mechanical and moving media filter. THen a separate second stage sump will be for the rest of the bio filtration.

yeah, me too to be honest:D it did add more but i started to find that the arowana didnt swim around about 1.5 feet of the end of the tank as it didnt venture behind the wood, so made it so its cleared from the top so the arowana can swim the entire length of the tank. something different:D good feedback though, i did feel the same way to be honest lol -

i agree i hear some local stores also lobbying to import rare items and when it comes in, no one buys and they are stuck with expensive rare fish for ages. i agree that is a problem, also people do not anticipate the potential max size of the fish. so i agree with you. people dont bother becuse they wont sell enough of it i for one is willign to pay a price for fish i like! -
so where do we get them?

if you are talking about the 'pond filter' in trademe or some3thing, the one with built in UV guess again most of these pond filtration isnt designed with any bio media as i found out recently - my friend has a pond, and had amonia problems, upon invesgiation, discovered that the pond filters, which si commonly sold in TM http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/fish/pumps-filters/auction-444432737.htm this does not have any bio media compartment inside, only 2 to 3 grades of foam, really for mech filtration if your tank is low stocked, then maybe its ok and have enough surface but really, you are better offwith fx5 fx5 is SPECTACULAR, and by far the best value for money filter in the market in my opinion, i have 3!! i dont bother with cheapy chinese crud anymore! they break, have 'crispy' plastic and are not well fitted to each other through poor plastic injection technology, and the water just doesnt get as filtered. fx5, is absolutely amazing as for the 9000lph in a 3000 litre pond, it snot about the capacity of filtration. Most filters will say "Good for 1200 litres' etc. but really they are not, general rule is this. If you have massive turn over, you can get away with less bio media because it goes past it more. if you have slow turn over but HEAPS of bio media, that is also fine, the trick is the balance between the two, also higher turn over will usually result in clearer water..... FX5 is superb and will be enough for your 1k tank and jags. the pond filter maybe as well but cos jags eat a lot of meat and protein, i doubt it and wouldnt risk it. look at the pond filter, maybe post a pic so we can tell if it has room for bio media. i think you need to turn over your water volume 6 times an hour for good filtreation as a general rule. In my 2000 litre system - i have a 6000 lph return pump, 3x fx5 and total of about 40 kgs of bio media. maybe more.

post some photos of your current set up. its not about research, care for silver arowana is actually easy, probably easier than most fish - that is after you have a large enough tank, and filtration to handle it. THey are hardy and easy to feed. The thing is, if your tank is very crowded, your tank is approx 700 litres. that may seem large but for an arowana that is the utter minimum (some say not even enough) dats get huge. with 700 litres, your waste dilution is reaching its max, its not just space, its water volume, so when you get an amonia surge, it will spike. amonia concentration is directly related to water volume say you have a 700 litre tank and there is 10 grams of amonia - and if you double your tank to 1400litres and have the same 10 grams, your concentrations are less .

i agree, but i found in the past, dats if well fed do not bother ground dwellers, they tend to know who to not bother in my experience. dats have a different way of eating, arowana will grab the food and must be able to catch it, a dat has to nly be about a few cm from its prey and will inhale it with its massive extending mouth like a john dory. i had dats with smallish clown loaches never an issue IF well fed. also clowns are very fast. but in say ing that, there is always that risk well fed to me may not be well fed to you. in 1 year, i got my dat at 2 inches to grow to literally 12 inches! primary diet is massivore 80% prawns 20% so when peole say dats are slow growers, untrue, it depends on protein intake.
-
why not, i dont see a reason not to:D
-
Jardinii will attack anything that isnt fast enough to avoid it or big enough to put up a fight, basically a monster. unless raised from tiny size with many fish. as for silver, they are definitely the most peacefull of all thats available here. i dont see a problem with your stocking ideas, except your tank is too small, and you need more filtration.

haha just saw that literally 10 mins ago! -
0.6 to 4 micron. so will easily go pass a 50 mcron filtreation sock :happy2:

Haha, that tank is absolutely awesome! could be a bit bigger, but as i have recently found out, too much space can actually work against a aggressive comm tank! density of stock can help moer towards getting rid of agro.
