Nice work Billaney! What sort of substrate or breeding set up do you have to ensure the parents don't eat the eggs/fry? How big are the biggest fry?

From my experience Serpaes breed prolifically, they are one of the easiest tetras to breed as they are so promiscuous. In a 2 foot community tank a small tetra was seen darting around, turned out to be a small serpae which was raised to adulthood. I think the females usually have more white on their anal fins. But just watch a group of them, you'll soon see which ones are the males.

Hey DJ thanks for that, do you know if they have any pH controllers? Can you please post a link to the one you bought? And is there a way that you don't have to piggyback the plug cos my fluros just have normal plug fittings. Unless I create a piggyback plug in and put the double plug into that with the fluros, but then i'm not sure where the piggyback plug would go?

Where would you find a solenoid to connect to an already set up BOC pressurised CO2 system I have set up and how much are they usually? Also same questions for a digital pH controller Cheers

Also, use a deep bucket and siphon it 1/3 full first, that way the fry won't get smacked against the bottom of the bucket. If you raise the bucket like Alanmin said too that will decrease the rate of water flow.

It's quite common to see small angels in with tetras like neons in the shops, looks impressive, but in the wild large angels would eat neons, so that's why it's not recommended. You can keep them with larger tetras no worries like lemons, even cardinals should be fine.

Yeah they're just glowlights, I've never heard of a orange tetra (When you wrote that I assumed it was a glowlight, great fish). Yes his avatar is a blue siamese fighting fish. In general fish are happier in larger numbers, as they will often form large shoals in the wild. It's a defense mechanism so they feel safer from predators as there's lots of others to look for danger and protect them. Not every type of fish needs to be in big groups though, e.g male siamese fighters will kill each other. Tetras and barbs though the bigger the school the better.

I may be wrong but I read once that once the tank/filter is fully cycled the filter converts ammonia (harmful) into nitrate (safe) in 24hrs, which of course becomes a continual process as the filter is always running. A heavily planted tank removes ammonia straight away.

lol...that's why I stick with freshwater all the way. The saltwater tanks always seem to be the dirtiest tanks in shops, is this because they rarely do water changes, saltwater tanks get dirtier quicker than freshwater, or don't clean them regularly enough (e.g wipe sides) or all of the above?

I believe snail rid doesn't actually kill snails it just has an element (copper sulphate) which the snails don't like so they bail out of the water, which is where you scoop them out manually. You could add snail rid to a bucket of tank water then throw the filter sponge in but I haven't used any for ages so not sure how long it takes to work, might be too long and your good bacteria on the filter sponge will start to die. You could try a strong salt solution.

Yeah everyone's right. The discus will also not get their share of food as the danios will bombard it first as they are more confident. Discus do best in groups of 5 or more and in a tank of just discus. Slower moving fish are the next best thing such as glowlights, cardinals, and black neon tetras and they like warmer water too. See how your discus go over the next few days and if they're still too scared I'd choose to keep the discus too.

I believe some snails act as an intermediary harbouring parasites that can find their way to fish, so that is a potential downside. Not all of them do though. Personally when I re setup my 4foot tank i'll be potassium permanganating (organic killer) all the plants to rid them of snails and eggs but I'm sure they'll show up eventually *sigh*

Hey Simfish, yes if you have any 1 or 2c coins. Discus are fine in 26-27 degree celsious temps only in some areas is it 28+ and only over summer so I have heard. I keep discus at 26/27 and have for months and they are fine. The aquascape is easy on the eye, nice blending of the colour variations. The driftwood is a bit heavy on the left however and makes you lose depth. The eye judds to where it is raised in the middle so you might want to cut it off or adjust it, or wrap some java moss or similar around it to help it blend in. Get some more stem plants for the back area so it fills the dead area back left, and once they grow thick and bushy around the driftwood coupled with the foreground covering all the stones it will be looking really good. A lot of people think a flat substrate is better than a rolling one, but this is of course your preference, just something to keep in mind. HTH

I had it quite badly in my 4 foot 300L tank and i was injecting pressurised CO2 as well. i knew ethryomycin was prescription only so seeings as it was going to be difficult just overhauled the tank instead (which i'm still in the middle of), this is also to rid it of black beard algae and long stringy brown hair algae. The hair algae was introduced from some plants from a friend who was infected and my tank never recovered. :evil: So, were my phosphates high too? I don't know, however I didn't overfeed, and I did water changes of approx 50% per week. It was heavily planted and last i tested it it was using all nitrates so registered on NO3 tests below readable.

You can cut the ramp off....easy just get a sharp knift and run along the edge on the top and on the bottom. Have done it on a two foot tank no worries.
