  1. Don't fix what ain't broke Meds usually stress fish out more so try to avoid unnecessary treatment.
  2. Hey Petey, definitely a good idea to do a water change as large as you can as the ammonia levels will start to rise in the tank because the filter is no longer converting into nitrate (which is safe chemical unless at really high levels). The white spot often happens from temperature swings, it stresses the fish and makes them susceptible to disease and white spot is easily caught because it's present in most tanks anyway but healthy fish don't usually pick it up. Rising ammonia will also stress them out and can cause them to catch it. You can get battery opereated units called UPS (I think from Dick Smith?) which will keep some of your appliances on for a short time (depending on their wattage of course as to how long it lasts, e.g cannister filter won't last as long as an air pump). The bacteria die more from lack of oxygen than temperature as it cools slowly. If you have a cannister you even do water changes on that to keep the O2 up. Be wary though if you put in water too cold it kills off large numbers of bacteria.
  3. If you live on the North Shore it wouldn't be lying around for long I don't announce where I work sorry Brian.
  4. No don't call the power company!!!!!!!!! I'm a supervisor at one and took over 100 calls yesterday the majority were faults from that area but also Morrinsville, Te Aroha, all over. Out of all those calls only had one really bad patronising annoying irrational customer. Well I'd suggest you stick with whatever company you are with PETEYPLECO Monaro1 because we don't pay out for any losses unless it was our fault, e.g we disconnected you by accident. The recent storm is classified by United Networks (the lines company for Auckland and Wellington) as a Force Majeure event, that is, due to severe weather conditions causing outages beyond anyone's control, therefore no payouts at least from the network co. We would advise you to consult your insurance company. Supply cannot be guaranteed 100% of the time. Interesting that i'm saying this yet have valuable fish myself?? Indeed, well what you can do is as Monaro1 said cover your tanks with blankets and duvets to retain the heat, use polystyrene, also take hot water out of the cylinder as it stays hotter longer than your tank will as better insulated more often than not and larger volume of water (usually) too. Glad that Waikato only has a few outages ay? Don't be complainin' about 2 hours Brian some customers went all night without it and need it for water and sewage.
  5. I think the only difference is that Via Aqua rebranded as Aqua One. The design is different too so if you want newer go Aqua One. Check the litreage/gallonage / hour for output vs price
  6. She mentioned she's had the cory over a year assuming in the same tank? Could also be worms, is there anything protruding from their anus?
  7. Cool now if only you lived in South America you might have discus swimming past your house when it rains really hard!!!
  8. When's the last time you did a water change? Ever tested for nitrate? What's the pH? It may have swung recently
  9. There's definitely something in the water in Wainuiomata. Just out of curiosity what's your standard water parameters out of the tap? pH/dH?
  10. Like gallonage, British Imperial differs to American Colonial
  11. Hi Lyndy, how long have they been in there? Depending on temperature they can take between 24-36hrs to hatch. Given that you have them in tank water though it should only be 24 hrs. I'd recommend if you haven't already turning off the air supply and letting it settle for 10mins. Take a flashlight then shine it in, you should see tiny moving creatures aka nauplii (BBS) Did you add salt?
  12. Hello, it's that time again I picked up 3 red melons from Ronnie a while back, here they are still going strong. The other 2 leopards are a bit older and from Discushaven. This is my grow out tank. edit: lightened photos via photoshop they can be better viewed
  13. So when people talk about straining yolk, are they talking raw yolk? I don't see how you can strain hard boiled yolk!
  14. I never understood this whole "straining" of the egg yolk, how would you do this with a hardboiled egg? The yolk is hard! Oh yeah only use the yolk btw. Runs off to make hardboiled egg on toast, one for me one for fish
  15. With planted tanks you can reach over 100% O2 saturation. Not sure how lol

    Amazon Tank

Nice work Warren, I had the same problem which I eventually (manually) rid myself of in my 4 ft tank. Are the M/Hs pendants? How many are there? There's a product you can buy from LFS which actually does work called magic clear, that might help your cloudy water problem.

    Hi Folks

Hi FD, welcome aboard. That would a different kind of tank, always good.
  18. Just a note here, be careful running your CO2 straight into the filter intake because the CO2 turns into carbonic acid when mixed with water which has abrasive qualities. That's why most city localities chemicals added to the water to raise the pH 7+ so it doesn't wear down the pipes. For one bottle of DIY CO2 i doubt it would be a problem but just beware.
  19. I have a couple of barebottom discus tanks, well one has a thin layer of sand and some plants as the discus in there are adult and they look better on display with some character to the tank. You're right, barebottom is boring but if you want your discus to grow 5x faster and produce show quality, you do daily water changes (takes me 30-45mins for both tanks per day). It's mainly so you can see all the waste on the bottom clearly, this way it keeps the water quality at a premium. Diseases/bacteria can accumulate in substrate/gravel and cannot all be removed even when doing huge water changes and plumbing it with your standard siphon. Once full grown then they look best in a fully planted tank which is the 5 adults i have in with the sand. The young red melons get 70% water changes daily and auto feeder timed to feed them 6x day.
  20. Hi evil_elmo, discus prefer to be in groups of at least 6. The more discus the more confident they are to venture out like most fish. I would say the reason with the neons is they felt more secure because the neons would fall prey before they do, they are more confident fish and are happy going to the top to feed whereas discus prefer to be midlevel swimmers and feeders for the most part. The neons are an early warning system for them.
  21. Try a water change with water a few degrees cooler than the tank at night, feed live food that day and night too.
  22. Good to hear of an occasion where everything was done right and resulted in no fish casulties. It is very tempting to hurry the process and most of the time it is okay but the one time something goes wrong......it's nice to know no fish off to fishy heaven.
  23. What's so wrong with it? I think it would be neat to take a trip to the local river or lake and pick up a few pick and mix killies Positives anyone? Killies eating mosquito fish? Seeings as they mainly eat live food I don't think they would have a lot of impact on the flora environment.
