  1. I don't like them aye. Freaky things! Need big tanks too
  2. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a discus older than 10 years, especially in NZ with poor access to medications. Simplydiscus.com reported a 14 year old one once. Definitely a solid innings compared with most fish
  3. Hi Natalie. 10 years with good water conditions.
  4. You're doing everything right, nice. Illuminate the tank as much as you can then take a photo without the flash, I reckon the photos turn out more natural this way and it doesn't scare the fish so much. Turn the filter back on when the fry are firmly 'attached' to the parents, which is usually after 24 hrs. You can experiment to see how they find it, or reduce the output. You can do a water change but I would give it another day or so myself because when you add the new water, even slowly, the fry can go flying. The fry are very sensitive to water changes so if you do do it, make sure the new water is the same temp and pH as the old water and pour it onto a plate or something like that first. Goodluck
  5. Congrats great to hear! Maybe they can sense the cooler air and that's set them off. Do you have any pics of the parents/fry?
  6. Heya! Thanks for the enquiry. Yes I would definitely send down there as I've sent 5 before overnight to Robert.. I guess that's the same guy you speak of? And they were all fine. I just need to buy some bags Re the red melons I only ended up with 6; I think flukes got the better of the others slowly. I've now treated the parents twice with PP to kill the flukes. I decided to put those 6 babies in my 4 ft planted tank as I've never had discus in there before. They look very cute and already the solid orange colour is coming through. As of tonight I have a fresh 200-300 if not more eggs! I've never seen so many. They laid on the terracotta pot at last. I siphoned the detritus out of the bottom, scrubbed the sides, and added methylene blue and formalin to help prevent egg fungus. Watch this space. (So need a new camera lens!)
  7. Bought 2 sparkling gouramies today....was very difficult to tell the difference in sex because they're so small....pretty sure in the end I got a male and female though.... the females have more rounded anal fin and the males pointy with red fringes
  8. Back at the helm aye Alan? NICE one Good to have you back and reinstalling killie enthusiasts about the countryside. Now I really should go and check my mops for eggs
  9. They are beautiful fish! Goldfish Bowl here in Hamilton always seems to have them so I'm going to buy some

    a big hello

Ello, welcome aboard Maybe someone can help you there to post some pics of those discus
  12. Metro in food is much more effective. Goodluck
  13. Yep no such thing as too many plants, and certainly great to be posting about that as opposed to 'why do my plants keep dying?' A couple of days ago I trimmed my giant hygrophilia back filled out the entire fore and midground with it. It looks totally magical entirely filled with plants especially when there's continuous streams of 02 rising off them! Your tank looks great, do you add CO2?
  14. Awesome! Congrats on the good news
  15. Looking great Blue keep up the dedicated work

    SOS!

Is your bubbler running? Do you run CO2 and left it going all night?
  17. It also mixes the CO2 thoroughly throughout the tank

    Otto's

Ottos are awesome algae eaters. Just wanted to add that they're well worth the price and I have 3/4 left after a few years. Just add them to your tank over an hour as they're sensitive to new conditions. Oh, that's after you track some down
  19. You gotta wonder  I think it just comes down to the fear of people misusing it coupled with NZs cleangreen image - they don't want any superbugs created here. A lot of other countries can obtain this great drug readily though. It is a great fluke killer and worm killer at the same time.
  20. Hey nicmack how you doin? sorry to hear about the discus. Has it been scratching up against other objects at all? Any other external signs?
  21. Wow those discus look great Ronnie, keep up the great work there. Be nice to see a big bunch of them in there. Are they enjoying it?
