  1. Cheers guys, yeah I added some shell in a stocking (what you can see in the foreground) to add some minerals and raise the hardness of the water which in turn is supposed to make them grow faster.
  2. You could get 4 adult discus in there if you have it barebottom (BB) or 5-6 juveniles to grow out. The usual rule is 36L/adult discus. Plants work but you're more open to problems lurking in the substrate so to start I recommend BB. For filtration you want 5x tank volume/hour Hope this helps
  3. Nice looking fish mate, goodluck with the pair :bounce:
  4. Hi Jayci usually circular with some stuff on it like little sausage rolls, pizza, bread, sausages, finger food is the best. There's an oven upstairs that I just found out about today too

    Red Spot

Nice one Great fish. I have one at about 20cm. How big is yours?
  6. lol @ a forum dedicated solely to them. That's awesome. Thanks davidb
  7. Mmm the water they're found in is clear so I'm not sure. Some paraphrased habitat points from the article at: http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/p ... ?news=1210 The area contains dense growths of Elodea and Anacharis Roberts wrote: "The fish lives in small heavily vegetated ponds apparently maintained by seepage in hilly grassland at an elevation of about 1040m/3420ft near Hopong town." "The ponds are small and shallow, at most perhaps 30cm deep, and maintained by seepage or springs. The water is clear unless roiled with recorded temperatures of 22-24C in January 2007. The present terrestrial vegetation is open grassland." Bit ironic that Practical Fishkeeping want everyone to breed them but don't provide all the details. Maybe no one's tested for everything yet?
  8. Great news Billaney well done! What's the dH and KH of your water down there? (if you used straight tap?) Do you know if 7.2 pH is ideal? I couldn't find the pH or hardness of their natural habitat in any articles I've read so far. Cheers

    PMDD

I've heard it's best to keep the mix in a cool dark place. But I also don't know if it's light sensitive. I know that iron is not very stable in a liquid form though so it's best to add PMDD daily.
  10. Thanks guys I forgot to mention I had to move the Dad on Sunday to a community discus tank cuz the juveniles had ripped a gash in his side from over-zealous feeding! He was lying near the bottom recovering sometimes. The good news is he's doing well in the community tank hopefully he'll be good as new soon.
  11. Hey guys sorry about the late reply sub.z! No I got my melons off a reputable breeder in Auckland Update is I got down to 6 50c piece-sized melons which wasn't much to work with, I think flukes got the best of the others, so I put them in my 4ft community tank but unfortunately they disappeared after a while. The good news is I treated the parents for flukes twice then they spawned again and had HEAPS of eggs. Now I think I have about 30 of the melons 10c piece-sized and I'm feeding them up on brine shrimp (everyday), daphnia (occasionally), and color bits (everyday). Once I get my new lens I'll definitely get pics up (*goes to look on TM for a good Canon lens*)

Great pics guys. I'm curious though, why are they getting posted under this thread and not the original discus pics thread started by Discus Guru?

  17. So it's sorta like between them and God? Cheers Penguin
  18. Cheers for that Mel
  19. Hey guys, I tried to buy a pair of these at the LFS but I'm not sure that they are. Does anyone know how to sex them or the behaviour they show then getting ready to spawn? I know they're eggnest builders. The book at the LFS said the anal fin is sharper on the males. Via google I read you may be able to see the ovaries in females. Anyone have any pics of a known male/female? Cheers
  20. Hi kiwigirl, I'd keep the tank totally dark for 5-7 days then gradually start letting light in. Start by feeding greenwater/infusoria after 48 hrs when they are free swimming and have used up their egg sack. Fresh rainwater and boiled peat often triggers them to spawn
  21. Looks fantastic! well done and good luck
