  1. all it means is you are sitting on the fence. And if you think you can let the "been here for many many years" bit past?Could be construed as hypocritical as a reptile keeper myself, but I know full well probably something in the order of 95% of lizards in nz in private collections over the age of ten years would have been smuggled.I have had reptiles in one way or another for 40yrs or so and the only ones that will pass the longevity test with any degree of belief are a handful of tortoises that can be documented.legal importation of these was stopped in the late 60`s early 70`s.Back in those times very little was knowen or practised even overseas in the way of captive breeding of much at all.
  2. careful pogona, you are likely to get a fence picket stuck where it will hurt shortly?
  3. you could, but don`t get too attached to your fish, they may slowly dissappear?Zebras would be ok but the neons rest on the bottom when the lights go out,so do the turtles but who wakes up the quickest?
  4. have had adult turtles given to me or whatever that have been raised inside in tanks with heaps of close people contact.Put them outside in the pond and they revert to wild habits as quick as anything, one slight move and they are gone.Turtles are not a `hands on pet`they don`t seem to mind being picked up etc and people that say they need company, are lonely, etc just make me want to laugh. They will come up to you if they are hungry but as for affection...forget it,they just don`t need or want it.
  5. won`t work with a uv because it has to pass through it?I have been told golden barbs love to eat it and will also tollerate cold water, even if only through summer, could be worth a try.
  6. don`t stuff around with things like palpating that you know nothing about. The turtle will lay when its ready, all you have to do is provide the right conditions and the best possible diet. After you get this right just sit back, watch and wait.I have bred over 1000 red ears, have yet to palpate one???
  7. have seen and heard of all sorts of dominance issues with tankmates of all combinations. Also seen a male and female growen up together in a large tank(1.5m) with dual basking/feeding sites with no probs.I would say size is the(tank)they have to have somewhere to call there own and be able to get adequate food. One day you will look in and see one huge one and one small one, maybe the small one will also only have 3 legs?
  8. do you read your pm`s varanophile?(what does that mean?)
  9. not many people you will find are able to keep them together for any length of time.My male cannot even be kept within sight of any females let alone in the same tank.I would say unless you are wanting to breed seriuosly just go for one,you can devote more time food etc to it.
  10. yeah,living art ,I agree.but its too late now?was already wondering anyway,now I know for sure.
  11. and because it has been done that way there is no chance of ever getting them again!(legally)
  12. had 3 last year that `arrived`in my outdoor goldfish pond after natural incubation in my turtle pond nearby.Never did anything for them other than give goldfish food to the fish which they were seen to eat,as for winter just left them.Never saw them till a couple of weeks back and there are still3 healthy wild little turtles out there. They can`t get out of the pond other than sitting on lilly pads or the odd pot plant and must have wintered in the water among weeds etc.
  13. yeah right, and the colours that are already here after what?4yrs??you jokers are dreaming if you can`t or won`t acknowledge there has been some serious smuggling going on?
  14. if you can`t contain your red ears Slevin you will have no show at containing snake necks???
  15. probably been getting a hard time from the males or res?have a look in there for it burried with just the top of its shell showing(if your lucky) or get a little foxie etc and have fossick around about, they actually spend more time out of the water like this in the wild.
  16. can too, even the odd one in private hands.Ti point has a couple also napier aquarium had a few courtesy of Freddie Angel(deceased)
  17. mine is raised up above groundlevel and has no filters etc as they could not cope with the load anyway.when it gets too murkey I can just pull the plug rinse it out and fill it up,you could have a standing pipe and trickle new water in slowly but I have a well and pump and have topay for that??It is just an old fibreglass spa type pool sitting on the ground, drain underneath and iron sheets on to wood frame filled up with soil/sand etc to the top of the pool and the sides go up higher so you stand beside it and look in if that makes sense?it is a fair volume of water so it takes a while to get really stinky depending how often and what I feed them.

    Goldfish fry

thats a good idea to introduce snails to your ponds, they will eat all the next lot of fish spawn that you get???
  19. give it a chance, they are not like chooks that lay once a day.they can stuff around looking for the right spot for weeks!what do you have for a nesting place? Why do I imagine a nice bed of dry sand???
  20. try out at bethells beach, just head across from the carpark and follow the stream up,you should find pools along the sides of various sizes and flows, some will have no flow and these are the ones where you should find what you are after, keep an eye out for freshwater flounder up here too, quite interesting adition to any tank.
  21. actually read an account of where some university students or similar did surveys of stream life and health on the northshore and they discovered a population of giant kokopu alive and well, this was only two years or so back.

    Pond Fish?

have had peppered cats outdoors year round in hastings for years, had a friend with golden barbs and also rosy barbs in palmerston north.
  23. anyone know the brand name of these or use them?apparently they fit on a hose and the venturii action of the water going in sucks up the sludge and pushs it out through another hose?Having problems with all the sludge etc becoming buoyant and floating to the top when the sun activates the algae etc to produce little bubbles that make it float up and form an unsightly scummy layer on top.
