IRA, could it be a tuning issue or something? What model have you got?And how long for, did it ever work well? Now I have a deltec I just can't see how they'd perform poorly unless there is some kind of problem. Give us some info!

That's the eight thousand dollar question Jimmy  Who knows! There's been some argument on overseas boards with no definative evidence either way. Reef has tried one, he believes the Deltec is better.

    Bugs

People with manderins let them eat pods ( little white bugs that live in the tank ). Very few manderins ever learn to eat prepared food and for this reason some new reeferes loose manderins to starvation having bought them not realising their needs. But a few manderins learn to eat frozen food. To have a manderin the tank needs to be of a size and nutrient level to support a big enough pod population to support the manderin. With your Goby, it is unlikely your sandbed will ever supply a major part of it's diet, because the emphasis in a tank must be on keeping the sandbed and tank clean. You can only have a large population of critters in it, if there is a lot of organics in there for the critters to eat. But this is not such a good thing for the tank generally. However, Pies is the man to talk to about this, he has a refugium that supplies a big part of his fishes diet, from critters that breed in it. If he is not reading this thread you could drop him a pm.
  7. Actually the scariest time I've had in my life was in Gisborne, went there after kaitaia I was still quite young, single, and flatting. Ended up sharing house with among others mongrel mob members. That WAS tough, made the white gangs in Christchurch look like a kindergarten picnic. Ended up leaving town to get away from it all, that's why I'm in Aucklands North Shore now, the most crime FREE place in NZ
  8. Well Joe, looks like you chose best country, worst city
  9. Well isn't this thread a great advertisement for Christchurch? Could this explain some of the little personality quirks of our most famous Christchurch member?

Opius, unless you have a very large tank this fish will not sustain itself from bugs etc. in the tank alone. You will have to train it to eat food.

Check out the prices of the opposition, BubbleKing. You can get one if you're prepared to sell the house. Deltec very cheap in comparison. ( Still expensive though )

Yes. Must be a pretty good photographer too.
  13. Yes, struck me as odd at the time also. I guess as a young person flatting I was thrown right in the middle of it. Perhaps the dress code has changed over the years, but I was surrounded by what would be called "white trash". Even had bike gang type people coming around the house can't remember what they were called, maybe it was Epitaph Riders. Do they still exist? Some of my flatmates were North Islanders also, that kept me balanced.

Not really directed at you Layton. Just thought, photoshopped or not the guy has a dream tank. Let's give him his due and not raise the old photoshopping accusation, when let's face it, we don't know.
  15. Yes I remember what struck me, was that at that time anyway, it was very monocultural (white) and everybody had nice houses, yet there was all these white kids from good homes with tats and nazi attitudes and stuff. The girls though were definately more entertaining than where I came from, maybe there's something in the air down there Feelers? Didn't know it had the highest suicide rate that's surprising, it is a nicely laid out, attractive city. Strange!

Yeah. Bit harsh to accuse the guy of photoshopping when he may just be an awesome reefkeeper.
  17. Long time. When I was aged 16 I got a job down there. First few months I boarded with a young couple but they had marriage troubles it was pretty high stress, then I went flatting, that had it's moments too one night someone nearly got shot with a 303 rifle by his drunk girlfriend caught him cheating. Had the barrel stuck in my face while trying to stop this.( As you can see I never made it to Uni ) Lived there 2 years then went to kaitaia. Never been back I doubt i would recognise the place now.

I've had a close look at the individual corals, IMO it may be genuine, although there's a couple seem rather brighter than I've ever seen, so don't know. However one thing he's done well for overall effect, is mix the colours. Notice even the drab coloured stuff looks stunning due to the contrasts with their neighbours.
  19. Nice to know there is always someone down in Christchurch, thinking about me. Did you know I used to live there?
  20. Actually I suspect you just put it in for me, right?

  22. Ha Ha  . I thought you were REALLY going a bit overboard with your iron thing Layton  But then you said it was for the clarity. NOW I get it . had me fooled.

Hmmm.... That's an EXTREMELY interesting tank. The guy has an interesting management method, there is a bit of everything. Zeolith and some zeo products, prodibio, and yes, a DSB. I think he thoroughly understands what he is doing and uses the products he needs to get the results. Also, undetectable nitrate, yet rich colours. It is surely one of the most colourful tanks I have seen! Wonder how much it cost him?
  24. Wouldn't get to worried, it will be gone in a few days If you caught a few of those rock pool shrimps & put them in, they'd polish it off for you. That's assuming it's actually dead! Maybe they grow a new head. Somebody else may know.
