  1. So it's expanded and looking good now? Excellent! :bounce:
  2. Oh Thanks for the great info. That will spur me into action. It's not gone so far yet that I can't get the affected rocks out and do the boiling water thing. Might as well do it once & do it right. BTW, it's ugly
  3. Looks like you just stick the bulb in & you're in business. But before rushing in, they are not that cheap, for 2nd hand stuff. Are they used? My ones cost me new, for bulb holder and remote ballast, $120.00 + GST.
  4. RTN = rapid tissue necrosis STN = slow tissue necrosis TN = tissue necrosis For us, the terms refer to tissue death and peeling on sps corals. RTN will often advance so fast you can almost see it, and can kill an entire coral in as little as a few hours. STN will advance slowly, there will be a dead bit, and this may advance by a millemeter or two a day. TN is used as a general description for any tissue necrosis
  5. Here's a pic of this weed, what is it? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/ ... g/weed.jpg [mod=cees]img tags removed, file too large, see http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/linkin ... t8669.html [/mod] It came in on some coral, looked real unhealthy so I thought it would die, so I left it. But now, although still looking unhealthy, has spread and is now on several rocks. It's pretty ugly and looks like it could end up covering everything. What is it? And what should I do?
  6. Always pays to take your brain
  7. Well only can see one pic, but anyway one interesting thing for people wanting to cool the tank without breaking the bank. Check out the fan over the tank. Pick those things up at the warehouse cheap as chips.
  8. Good point. Talking to someone recently who mistakenly dropped his alk to 1 (believe it or not!) his sps looked bad but he did not lose any.
  9. Zooanthids prefer low/med flow, although some will do OK in high flow, and low/med light. If they are closed up I'd try moving further from the light see what happens. If they are the same as my green ones they like less light than some other zooanthids.
  10. I get mine from Hollywood North Shore. However for people further away I guess you could PM the importer, Reef, and ask who his nearest distributor to you would be.
  11. Well 65 watts is pretty good, that was my main argument against venturi skimmers, the additional power consumption. Not sure what the wattage would be for a comparable Deltec but there can't be too much in it.
  12. I used it a few years ago. Can't say I saw any difference in the tank. IMO the main thing is to keep calcium and alkalinity right, do water changes, and skim at max to remove nasties. Just that alone will be enough. But to get a bit extra zing, if it's a softy/LPS tank, dose a bit of Reef Solutions. And if there's a decent amount of SPS, keep MG in line. If wanting good coraline also monitor and dose strontium, but it's not essential. Anything after that may make small differences but not big ones. But everybody finds there own little tricks / additives, that work for them, no harm in a little experimentation provided it's in moderation and the basic parameters are kept right.

  14. Well going by that skimmer pic it seems you got a really good mix of air & water in there! Just eyeballing the skimmer against the size of the tank it looks like it should certainly keep it well skimmed, and aerated.
  15. I've got 3 seperate systems, but keep the parameters similar. When I transfer fish I just net them, & drop straight into the other tank. Never been an issue & fish settle quickly, it's probably less stressful than going through an acclimatisation process. The halide, one idea when going more powerful, is to set the new halide very high, and gradually lower it to the desired position over a few days/weeks, observing corals for any sign of burning during the process. However for 750 litres, I would have thought you would want more than one halide, 2 or 3 250's would give a more even spread. Also, a 400 is not 400/250 X more powerful than a 250. The increase in light output tapers off relatively, as you go higher wattage.

Layton you're back! Where you been? It's been quite here a couple of days. If anyone here used a Mac, I knew it would be you How do you like the MacToilet?

    Water Tests

When overdosing both alkalinity and calcium, a situation can happen when a "precipitation event" happens, commonly known as a snowstorm. This will reduce alk & ca to very low levels. The snowstorm is not always seen though but something like that may have happened to you. Because of side effects this causes such as ionic imbalance and other things that can be precipitated out as well, it's best to first do a really big waterchange ( as reef said ), and then start dosing to bring quantities up. If using 2 part, it's best to dose some calcium in the morning, and some alkalinity in the evening. However until you get it exactly right, dosing 2 part can be fraught with exactly the difficulties you have had. IMO kalkawasser is easier, it doses both calcium and alkalinity in the right balance to each other. But keep some calcium, and seperate alkalinity product, such as the Seachem ones you have, to adjust levels independently if they get a bit out of balance. Buying kalkawasser from lfs IS expensive, there are cheaper ways to get it.
  18. Yes when I had a cold water marine, of the same size as PeneJane, some seaweeds did OK under 80 watts floro. Don't ask me the name though I don't know. Yes I think she will need LR also. But as you suggest, a decent sand bed will provide some denitrification. I'd go just a sand bed without a ugf. Put it this way the stuff she's putting in is free, so she can experiment. Eventually though to have success, I think she will end up with LR.

Thanks Pies, interesting. Not going to bank 100% on relying that nobody would make a hacking attempt on my machine. Personal machines must still be profitable for these people, otherwise why these phishing emails? Oh, and for email, I use mailwasher, in my opinion anyway an excellent product at a good price.

Thanks Ghostface, I was thinking just over the holidays so I can monitor, but we're not going away now, well only 2 days. But next year I'll drop you a line about this when the time comes, Cheers! I think my machine has already been a target, not the usual porn etc. but there's been attempts more from money scamming type nasties, key loggers etc. I must have done something silly and attracted attention somehow so think the bad guys have already had a look. Doubt they read fnzas though  Anyhow I'm a bit paranoid about security, I also use Counterspy which seems to do a great job.
  21. Sounds good! For sticking rocks together while wet some LFS sell a product, but you could also just use sand & cement if you are careful. Mix real strong, (1 cement 2 sand) so it will set fast, leave rocks out of the water for a few hours but mist them so stuff won't die. Then fill gently with water & do 100% water changes for each of the next few days. Lights, 6,500k is fine for the livestock, but looks a bit yellow to us. 10,000k is more pleasing to the eye. How many watts? You'll need quite a lot, 40 watts absolute minimum but 80 watts better. Computer fans excellent idea. But have them blowing rather than sucking, so there is air actually blowing down on the water surface. Seaweed, yes. But this is light dependant, and for a number of other reasons also may do poorly. But what the heck it's free, if it dies just remove it. Try many different types you may get a few that work.

   Now I get it! wondered where all that spyware came from!! But seriously, I have had hack attempts and spyware including key loggers installed it has been a worry. I run a business including property, I have a line of credit available online for property purchase and if my machine was compromised it could be nasty. Perhaps it would be better to take the option where you can upload cam pics to a remote server? Course then you have to pay for it

Set it up and I'll give you some! But honestly, I'll give it a bash myself, but a couple more questions - you'll have to excuse my ignorance here I've just never been that techno. But - Doesn't having a static IP make it easier for someone to hack the computer? And, wouldn't opening that port make it easier for someone to hack? I've got ADSL with orcon, but the slow 256k version, and my firewall is Sygate free version.
