  1. Since you have had success with the species ( which is a great achievement in my book ), you could probably order one through your lfs, probably that is the only way you will get one.
  2. Wow that's interesting! has it been going in the winter?
  3. Yes Duke, I'm no expert but if you try these guys http://www.photobucket.com/ Even a technophobe like me can make it work so must be OK
  4. Yes it is more concentrated in some areas than others, so therefore what appears to be gaping holes in my theory, are in fact not gaping holes at all, because in some areas the whole thing is made much worse by the metal eating bacteria, which are fuelled by the hot air prevalent in certain parts.
  5. Smallreefer give me a call 479-5446. Can't give you what is commonly called "turbo snails", but have another species available. I'm in Mairangi Bay.
  6. I have little doubt that much of what you say will turn out to be correct. After all the statement "what I've said" would embrace all the many topics you have spoken on, including water quality, lighting, iron, how to build a controller, zeovit, alkalinity, how to grow healthy sps, rock cooking, photography, sand and DSB's, to name but a few. But are any of us 100% infallable? I think not. My previous post was not to say how much of what you say I agree with or otherwise, it was simply a comment on the air in Christchurch. My theory is it has a "nutrient" added to it, probably iron, but maybe aluminium. You can tell by the high crime rate of the town, and the large number of grizly murders performed by it's citizens. The evidence is that in some areas this nutrient is very concentrated and has the effect of blocking the ability of people to take a pic of their tank.
  7. CanadaReef, They are scarce around here, I may be wrong but suspect you will have to import one. Someone could have one laying around though. BTW I think there is something in the air in Christchurch that makes some people unable to take a pic of their tank. Control, we are here to share and help each other, if you were prepared to show your skimmer you will likely get some tips how to improve it, so you can get rid of the algae.
  8. Even though it is thin skimmate, it is still an impressive amount of crud coming out of Brians tank, which I believe still has a very low bioload. I'll bet your tank must be sparkling Brian!
  9. Agree with the above. Would NOT recommend the potasium permangenate. A highly powered skimmer will do wonders. Other than that, have good flow, and syphon it relentlessly, it will grow back but just keep at it if you have a good skimmer you will eventually win. Don't overfeed. But if you have a poorly performing skimmer you may never beat it. I have heard more reefers give up the hobby because of cyano bacteria than any other reason.
  10. Hi Canadareef they will readily host in what is sold here as a LTA, and sebae. In a tank they will also host in any of the other hosting anemones, even though they may not be their preferred host in nature. Jansens and Hollywood can sell you these anemones. H Magnifica is a difficult anemone to keep alive in a tank, and also not sold here very much.
  11. I think it's a typo he may mean tang.
  12. Ha Ha, yes I know a bit about Gann, even written my own version of some of his indicators in my computer. What do you do, trade metals or something? "Would not buy the Dow for all the money in China" Ha Ha, very insightful, in more ways than one!
  13. Where'd you get your info Duke? I'm holding stock in Golden Star, a US owned goldminer that is not doing to good at the moment I was about to dump them at a loss. Gold 1600+ ? That would solve things But how did you get the info?

    Tank Upgrade Photos

Here's mine He is a slightly different model to Fays, he's a seaweed blenny, as opposed to Fays which is a lawnmower blenny. Both these types only eat algae and will often starve to death once it's gone, but sometimes they will catch on to eating normal fish food. I got mine a few years ago to attempt to control my nasty algae problem. But the seaweed blenny is not as effective as the lawnmower blenny so in the end I went zeovit which did get the tank cleaned up. But then the blenny went skinny as I had to go collecting algae covered rocks to keep him alive. It took a few years but eventually he figured out how to eat fishfood so now he's fine. Today he was even hunting down and eating live shrimps that I put in. He's even figured out I'm the guy who puts the food in & he keeps a close eye on me, I think he's got a few brains. Anyway they are ugly, but cool.

    Fly season

No, not if you get any in the tank. Pyrethroids are toxic to fish.
  16. If you want a cheap Christmas present chill back and watch this! http://www.quillworker.com/spaceoddity.htm It's a look down a microscope at some underwater critters while you listen to Space Oddity by David Bowie.
  17. Yes a big US investment house has recommended a SELL on the NZ$, saying it is 20% overvalued. Just for those interested, they have recommeneded a BUY, on the Brazilian real, ( I think it's called ) which they believe currently one of the most undervalued currencies.
  18. Hmmmm........ Maybe I better not be to hasty shutting down my frag setup I've found at current pricing levels, it's not possible to compete on price by aquaculturing in a tank. What's caused this Reef? Is it certain fish/corals, or across the board?

Well I like that Fay! It's one of those lawnmower blennies isn't it? The genuine article that munches through everything, even hair algae.
  20. Yes i think that may be a problem in the highly abrasive environement of a recirculating reactor using tumbling media. Can't be argued it's efficient in terms of giving steady output, but it is hard on impellors.
  21. Actually now I think about it, my lights go 8 hours per day, but my skimmer 24. So a 100 watt skimmer does equal 300 watts light.
  22. Vjarn I got some water at Takapuna boat ramp today (Friday) just before high tide, crystal clear. Should stay good as long as we got this South Westerly.
  23. All I can see is a whole lot of red X's! However we found out Helifax lives just down the road from me so I went and checked out his tank last night. I was IMPRESSED! It's very small, but very pretty. The whole thing is designed expertly, with attention to detail everything is right. This is reflected by the good health of all the livestock. Some people judge a tank purely by how big it is. But in terms of good presentation, healthy livestock, and good design, this small tank get's close to a 10. What's more surprising is this is Helifaxes first attempt.
  24. Well now my power bill is around $450.00 a month, I'm interested in saving wherever I can, when that tank power calculator came out I realised around 1/2 my bill is for the tanks. It's OK for the rich, but I'm not one of those. So, I'm closing my frag system, and doing a new main tank, a big part of the emphasis will be on economy of electricity. But you're right suphew, lighting is the major power consumer. However I really don't want a big debate over it. it's just a matter of opinion really, however for me, I'm now looking at power consumption at each step of the tank set up, and going with the best option each time. I'm not even having a sump, to save running a return.
  25. Well thought I'd stay up late & get one of the 2 patches done, when I took the rocks out I've found this stuff has crept and crawled much further than I thought! Done it with boiling water but it was right across the base of some corals so I know I've damaged some corals. But didn't want any residue in the rock pores so had to be thorough. Still got the other patch to do but enough for tonight. Anyhow it came in on some of those Bali aquacultured corals, I'd recommend anyone whose got them just check for this stuff. I think once it really got established in a tank it would be almost impossible to get rid of and I think it could entirely take over a tank.
