  1. Yet another one of your bold ASSUMPTIONS Layton, once again not based on reality I'm sorry to say. Fact is I do know what the specs are, and I do know how it works.
  2. Just send the water. Lets see if the reality matches the hype!
  3. Just wonder why you have to launch such an attack on the Hanna meter anyway? Is it just that I've got one? Lets face it, you've never seen one, but you confidently disparage the device anyhow.
  4. Well, that seems to have put perspective on the usefulness of theories against practise
  5. Too soon. But when you're over Mairangi Bay way, drop on in. The phone number is 479 5446, call first, I'm in and out a lot.
  6. Cool yes. But you should talk to Jetski about that top one, might be best to get rid of it now.
  7. It's a bristleworm. They used to be regarded as bad, but now they are regarded as harmless scavengers. Where did you get these living things? Have you introduced some corals, or how?
  8. No need. You clearly already know everything. Just send me the water. I have a few questions I'd like answered
  9. Your water will answer all the questions I need
  10. Not quite sure but that top pic looks like something you don't want. The next pic is likely a palythoa, that's something you do want. He looks like he is not getting enough light. He does not need feeding, but if you can feed him (tiny bit of fish food) he will grow and multiply faster. I can give you some snails, not the ones commonly called turbos, a smaller one, but will eat diatoms. Be warned though, fast as the snails eat the diatoms, they will come back, until you have skimmed away the silicate from your water.
  11. Actually, you are right, I see it all now. I own & use one, so obviously would not know how it works. You, on the other hand, have never even seen one, and therefore are quite clearly in a much better position to make an informed assessment of the device. In fact, I am so impressed with your almost telepathic abilities, that I am going to award you my 10/10 award, for the person most able to know everything about everything, and form a valid, strong opinion, even on devices still unseen. In honor of your remarkeable talent, I now extend you a cordial invitation, to send me a sample of your tank water. The address is 9 Ronald Macken Place Mairangi Bay Auckland 1311 The water will be tested for PO4, with the Hanna. We will then be able to find out what your orthophosphate REALLY is, wether your hobby kit is REALLY accurate, and I'll even be able to tell you how often you REALLY clean your glass. Looking forward to it. Just one thing though, I'd like the water sample to be taken from your tank under supervision of a neutral person on this site.
  12. I suspect buying online may be besett with difficulties, actually getting it through customs. I'd try dropping the importer ( Reef ) a pm, he can tell you who your nearest reseller is. Or as previously stated, Pies may be able to help. Cyclopeeze great product for many things, but unlikely to do sqwat for xenia.
  13. Oh I see about your hanna comments. You've never actually seen one. I own one. They are a world apart from a hobby kit. Your lack of experience will explain your remarks, as I suspected. All the other stuff you said about photo diodes or whatever, is a lot of theories you read somewhere. If you actually get to see a hanna and use one, I'll be happy to talk to you about them. Otherwise, don't see any point taking your advice on the subject. ( Trying to be gentle )
  14. Well if it's 3 weeks between glass cleans I guess PO4 must be OK. You sound doubtful about the advantage of a Hanna meter. Have you ever seen one? I guess to some people they would have to try one, to know.
  15. It's also strongly linked with DOC's, I'm guessing that's what you've got the UV unit to help with, right?
  16. I didn't realise you could actually detect Po4, was it a Salifert kit? If you can actually detect any orthophosphate at all with one of those, you have a problem. How often do you clean your glass? And does a UV help with PO4?
  17. Not all detritus is the same, it depends just exactly what you blew off was. But to me, quantity of "detritus", is a general indicator of bioload, and DOC concentration, and general health of the bacterial population, and other things also, it is surprising what you can tell. If I'm running PO4 extremely low, and I turkey bast the rocks, I'll get a lot less detritus, than if i've allowed PO4 to rise. That's despite feeding the same.
  18. How's things looking now?
  19. Pohls CV, is a really good one for sps. I was playing around making my own sps food, which did get the polyps out, but not much other effect. But when I tried Pohls CV, the effect & growth was so awesome I'm just going with that, not bothering with my own. For zoos, lps, and stuff like that, blended mussel is a good one. However, it can add Po4, etc, so best applied with a dropper direct to the coral, after turning off all pumps. To really get xenia growing, in tanks where it does poorly, Reef Solution is the ticket. Helps a lot of other stuff too, such as caulaustrea.
  20. Uh Oh! That's going to ruffle some feathers! Wait for it.....
  21. Wow! What it is to be popular Helifax. By the time I get my post up there is 8 new ones in front of it!
  22. That depends on what you want They are harmless but considered unsightly if there is too much. But as long as you have a decent skimmer they will gradually dissappear as they get skimmed along with the silicates they contain, eventually there will not be enough free silicate left in the tank to keep new ones alive. But wait there's more - , then you get algae and that can be a bigger headache! So much to learn! That's why people get absorbed, and finally addicted, to this hobby.
  23. I have no qualifications in marine biology or similar. If people want to class what I say as muck that's fine on this site I get told I can't read, I have been called ignorant, I have been called stupid, etc. all by the same guy who has accused me of being abusive. I'm quite used to it by now. However despite the fact that I am ignorant, stupid, and can't read, I am able to post pics of nice corals growing in my tank, such as the one in my avatar. ( Unphotoshopped other than cropping of course ) I have grown that one from a small frag over the period of 9 months or so. Naturally that would count for nothing and truely I have no further interest in continuing in this thread. I only came back last post to counter the false information given in Laytons previous post, somebody following it could end up losing corals. But it's just yet another big undignified argument and this time I really am out of this thread, Layton can spout whatever he wants, and have an avatar of a coral from somebody elses tank, that's over to him. I can see how people just cannot choose from the many differing opinions given in this hobby, all I can say is do lots of reading, and go with something that works for you.
