  1. I have heared swift resboras are easy to breed but they need to be in their own breeding tank as the trick is to get the watter really soft (and slightly acidic i think) and add peat

    neons dying

alot of people disagree but I swear by salt freshwater ich hates salt so by adding 1tbl spoon per 20l it will drop straight off the fish and calms the uneffected fish so their imune system doesnt brake down
  3. deleted this one as yours comes out better
  4. Hi Buzzy I am at the moment desiging a reef tank and have a native mrine (pretty sad as i dont take that greater care of it) and am from palmy nth other than that I have only met one person that has a marine tank (only met him through a friend of a friend and dont even know if he still has his tank). I talked to eric at wet pets and he said that there wasn't anyone else in palmy that had one
  5. That tank has been set up for 3 months but the filter gravel and water has been in constant use through my tanks going back 19 months and the phosphate absorber is jbl phos-ex
  6. yeah I done that today hoping that was the problem but the result came out clearer (less coloured) than zero on the phosphate chart, hence the reason i am considering the algea still releasing phosphates. Although I only know the orriginal reading was more than 10ppm as that is the highest the chart went and it has defenatly come down a slight bit (in colour) but is still at the 10ppm range. I think like all things to do with aquaria it is better to take things slow even doing the right thing to fast in many cases can be terminal

    whole hog

Hi and welcome. I have a pantadon and would have to say it is my favorite fish, funny when friends come around and say "ummm hey one of your fish are dead"
  8. The Pet house in coastlands, Kapiti has a small saltwater set up and is a nice guy. In terms of what you need depends on your set up the one thing you need the most is access to lots of information if you havent gone to I terms of what you need I wont make a comment as I have no experience and you are better off talking to one of the more experienced people about that but trust me the budget will probably be bigger than you are expecting. Although if you were only planning on having fish you might be able to do it on a budget of 1-2K, Possably cheeper '>reefcentral.com I would sudgest you do. I have also found books to be very helpfull but you have to make sure you are getting one written for the begginer the best one i have come across so far is "The Questions & Answers Manual of The Marine Aquarium" I terms of what you need I wont make a comment as I have no experience and you are better off talking to one of the more experienced people about that but trust me the budget will probably be bigger than you are expecting. Although if you were only planning on having fish you might be able to do it on a budget of 1-2K, Possably cheeper
  9. I know in a saltwater tank our sand is no good as it is silica based and leeches toxins or nitrates or phosphates or somthing that isnt good i would say it does the same in freshwater If it is for a cichlid setup and it is ok for the ph to be (high i think) then you could use finely crushed limestone
  10. I have also dropped feeding to once every two days
  11. Fish tanks are great for stress relief, at my last job it was hectic and really stressfull and the excuse i always used to justify spending thousands of dollars in total on fish. The problem with the excuse is that I have been 'holidaying' (getting over my last job or too lazey to find another i haven't decided yet )and still spending the money on fish. I guess it is just that I know when i do get another job it will be just as stressfull and I am setting up for the future (well good enough excuse for me anyway)
  12. I have got really high phosphate levels (more than 10ppm) scince i dicovered this i have done 2x 25% water changes and add a phosphate remover I am not overly worried as it has only been a couple of days but the phophates arn't going down yet. For filtration I have an external filter (900lph) internal filter (900lph) and Two under gravel filters. I have alot of rocks in the tank with algea growing on them could it be that the algea is containing the phophates and releasing them? and if that is the case is it worth putting them in a bath with some janola to kill al the bacteria? Or should I just be patient and let time and water changes fix it? regards, Daniel
  13. for a closed loop pump as it is not as essential and wouldn't be a huge catastrophy if it broke down would it be woth looking at buying a high flow water pump form an agracultural store they are made to pump the likes of sewrage so i doubt they would deteriorate and may be much cheeper
  14. wow you already got it and i assume they got it right this time
  15. Where is the marine store in wellington the only place i knew of that sold marine was the pet store in coastlands, paraparaumu
  16. Yeah for sure, My phosphates are a little high at the moment so it might take a couple of week untill i get these down then i will start making the changes and posting photos
  17. I have just set up a designated tank for my angels they have neat personalities and are easy to breed
  18. Nodle A good book I have found very helpfull is "The Questions & Answers Manual Of The Marine Aquarium" By "Nick Dakin" I have brought several books all of which i had to buy of amazon.com or over the phone at jansons and found they were useless for a begginer to much detail examining the taxanomy of the fish & invertabreas but didnt explain the "simple stuff" to you I found this book at my local library and it has been really informative a great stepping stone rather than just going straight into the complicated confusing stuff
  19. water level has been filled to the top this morning it was just that i was out of water and had to go get more
  20. Yeah I am going to Thanks to everyone who gave comments and or advice it is much apreciated
  21. Thanks I will move the heater like you said as i am confident I have plenty of water flow and will build the rock are bigger to hide all this Yeah it is very bare at the moment both in fish and plants the stepped gravel part I am going to turn into a heavily planted section and am planning on adding quite a few neons glowlights and penguin tetras later on down the track No the tank has no filtration in the lid but I am considering buying two power heads and turning the ugf into reverse flow ugf's as I can not gravel vac where the ugf is without moving all the rocks. Yeah the blue marbles had been berried and are from my very first fish tank it is only because i done this in a bit of a rush that they ended up back on top Thanks again for your comments and advice
  22. Thanks No I took my bristle nose out as I have a 25cm sailfin plece in there and my 6cm bristle nose was getting picked on so he was moved into my guppie tank and is now in with my turtle
  23. And is much apreciated now that you have mentioned it i have decided to change that end a little to hide these, but am going to leave it a little while i don't like upseting my fish to often thanks
  24. Yeah I would agree only I never seem to sit on the sofa and watch the tank i have 2 chairs on the other side or I sit in the lounge that is the reason i put the slope going down this way but am considering changing it
  25. Hi just thought i'd post the pics of my new tank set up. Any comments appreciated
