  1. who did you buy it through nodle?
  2. Mike used to mention that was why he used a bioball tower in his fish import system, to cope with shipment spikes, thou he did not probably have as much water in system as steve/nick do..... Steve - you testing for spikes i take it? what is your experience so far? Peter
  3. pies your huge... mmm that doesn't read well.... I totally agree that bigger is better.... I also believe that more rock = more porus serfice area = more natural filtration. more water, more flow, more skimming. more rock and more reading (this last one probably most important) less feeding, less fish, less hands in tank, less changing techniquers all the time....

    Waitemata Salinity

really interested to find out what the salinity of takapuna water is at the moment.... changed 150l on sunday, but did not even bother to check it............. will test tank tonight, c where it is. in the past my cheap floating thingy has always read 1.025 for taka water...... and seems in line with other peoples readings.
  5. should have brought a holden......
  6. I Be carefull guys and girls the DC ampage is quite high on these pumps, I suggest jumper leads direct to battery not the cig lighter connection point. other wise a sound article.

everyone talking measuring salinity by electrical conductivity in these type articles.......

  9. that was my thinking also... thermocouple action going on... this does imply that you would have to wait for temp of sample to equalise with the unit, and if the unit had been stored in a cold cupboard etc... it may take a little while.....
  10. How does ATC work on a refractometer when you have such a small ammount of water... or is it an ambiant temp correction, implying you have to allow the sample to sit for a time on the slide before reading???? Pies - you are normally a source of knowledge on these matters.... ideas?

over - wasp - i think the zeo(discussion) has barely begun......... Its only a matter of time before the zeo process becomes documented and proven/disproven..... I am sure some will feel vindicated and some will not. I am really surprised that there has been little comment from the great minds of reef keeping biology.... or that may be very telling, we shall c.

    Frag List

and if your start each post with FRAG: blah blah it could be searched quite easily.

    yeah right

because there is margin in it.... trademe guys just filling another niche and some pet shops sell cute little dogggies for $1500+ hahahaha of all the dogs/cats in NZ how many have been purchased in pet shops..... and why pay so much when the breeders will sell you one direct for way less...... lots of anomoliies in the pet trade.....

    Frag List

why not just use the trade and exchange list with a PHOTO of the frag, if its popullar I guess the board may create a frag exchange list.... you could then go back and edit out your frag as its swapped etc.

I think I agree with reef here.... Arthur thanks for responding to my post..... so far I have not really learn anything except 1. Most things are probably removed in the skimate....... 2. Zeoliths are very porus in nature (I am taking people word here but sounds solid) I really want to understand how the zeo system can possible change the hydrophilic/hydrophobic nature of things in the water coloumn.... This i believe is the main benefit of the zeo system, however its doing it. wasp - nice corals, good idea to do the before piccies! Peter

Arthur/wasp I don't understand this system that well. My limited understanding is that you change the media every so often, have to have a good skimmer and do regular water changes (and dose). so there are only 3 ways that nutrients can actually be exported from the closed system.... skimate zeolith media water changes I will for now assume they are not being bound to something like the rock in the tank but do actually get removed by some process....... this may actually prove to be wroung but as i say I don't really understand the biology or chemistry at micro level.... I personally do not see how the water changes at such small levels could be exporting the nutrients as quickly as the test results show nutrients are dropping.. I do have an understanding of how small changes effect overall concentrations so its either being skimmed out or its binding long term (until media change) to the zeo do you have a personal opinion on this or is it possible that its a two part system, the zeolith binding the phosphate and the other part helping the skimate.... anything that changes the hydrophilic/hydrophobic nature of any organic in the coloum will help here.. could it be that the on/off flow over the zeolith does a bind process then a flush.... the flushed stuff then been skimmed...... sortof pumping nutrients out... this is personal hypothesis, tho obviously unproven. it would be interesting to see if anyone has claimed success with zeo without the on/off flow being done. aurthe/wasp - i am trying to pump as much info out of you tweo as possible before you give up on layton and just disappear

what is your estimated power use by everything tank related ie everything, lights, pumps etc I have access to a clamp if you are interested... cheers

to be honest Layton I sorta agree, you have often hinted that you think you know what is actually happening in a zeo system, but when pushed you just post, its obvious - read up - follow fundamentals etc..... please can you in one post outline what you think is happening and why... I will not attack it, as i simply do not have an understanding of biology at this level. you obviously have the time to post long and complex arguments..... I would love to understand your position better but really at the moment i only understand that you do not believe that the zeo system can work the way the manufactures say it does. I have some theories myself, that its a simple binding mechanism going on.. I think the things added simply bind to the organics in the water coloumn making them easier to skim out, but hey i cannot prove that... any ideas how it works then?

It is my belief that most of the people keeping acros have purchased directly off the importers so we do not see a lot in the shops. I have seen several great AKL based tanks, with lots of neat acros. I guess the shops tolerate this as the market is small, and to be honest if they sold them many would be purchased by people who do not have the skills or technology to support them. That is why I started the thread, in a somewhat toungue in cheack why, of asking when all the cool acros shown recently on this site would be in the shops..... I am not saying this is wrong... in fact you can probably see a consistant tone in my posts supporting direct sales. I just find some of the culture in the trade to be slightly ammusing. Peter
