    Lighting questions

I think the flouros would work for the first 20cm of the tank, after that you would get no (very low) growth out of anything lower in the tank. So you could start with them, and as long as you understood the limitations and put most stuff up high in the tank it would work for a while. I would start with mushrooms and pulps etc , basically you only have 60W of light here... how deep is your tank? Layton is probably right on the money with the dual 250's but if tanks over 20in deep I would consider 400W MH's. I use 2 x 250W MH and tank is about 30inches deep, get good growth top 1/2 of tank... so 500W of light is not enough! I am going to upgrade to higher wattage MH once xmas excess is paid off.

    auckland heat

I purchased Brendans chiller and installed it on the tank last week, tank got to 29 and room hotter, i not want to risk what might happen next and also not want to change the photo period... seems to keep tank at whatever its dialed in for. Chimera, having the downstairs sump room may be cooling your setup.....

    ZEOVIT

phosphate and nutrients/nitrates can only leave a zeo tank a few ways 1) water changes, but at the low levels done i do not think it would lower levels like people say 2) skimmate, but unless something makes the organics more skimmable, which you should be able to "see" in the skimate" 3) in the rocks when you change them.... is the phosphate binding with the al in the rocks, and in the bacterial process that does this, nitrate is used up?????

    Bare Bottom tanks

unlike fish, baby sh*T floats... just need one of those little nets like they have at public swimming pools! apart from babys bare bottom, this has got so far off topic......

    Bare Bottom tanks

I agree that in NZ I haven't seen BB except frag/breeding tanks etc, certainly not the main display tank in the house. And I also agree that some people just don't let their tank mature in any configuration...... And having an acrylic tank, yes, no sand would be helpfull...... Personally i like the tanks where zoo's and polys etc just grow all over the bottom/glass walls etc.....
  7. I have noticed a growing trend on RC for people to convert from DSB to barebottom tanks with very high flow and wet skimming.... Some stay with a fine sand layer for appearance, others just flick it and run "starboard" on the bottom of the tank for appearance and also to stop rockslides breacking the bottom glass. some of these tanks have massive circulation numbers! and they all recommed skimming wet, to remove stuff before it breaks down. none of these tanks seem to have very high fish loads and many do not have that much rock as a % of volume. Many of the tanks looked great with DSB's so it does not seem to be a flippant decision by the tank owners. thoughts? has anyone else noticed the increasing trend.......... most Japanese tanks seem to be BB as well.
  8. maybe reef is selling the deltec because the BK is that good he no longer needs it.

to quote agian its a matter of what you like.... advertised colours not backed up in the lab. I have a 10K on one end and a 14k on the other, the 14k is a LOT bluer. Personally I now like the 10k's more then the 14k's

I hear this said a lot steve, but is there any "real evidence" that the spectrum changes so far that it causes (or indeed can) cause hair alagae outbreaks... is it the change in intensity that causes the problems? I know sanjay is trying to get old bulbs to do tests on, I await his scientic results eargerly
  12. next time you are in a LFS count the number of metal halides and take a real close look at where the corals are being kept.

    Lighting

its an interesting one, given the ammount of evidence that the spectrum printed on the bulb does not have a great deal to do with the test results. Even if the spectrum moves, is this matterial, or is it simply that the par levels fall off........

Zeobac taking a hammering on RC, the best RC has can't find any bacteria. Wasp - if it isn't bacteria thats doing the job (my observation in the absense of any evidence that bacteria have ever been in the solution). what is it that works?
  15. at least he's not selling a queen street apartmenmt with a rent gaurantee.....

    First Water Change

there has been a lot of doubt cast on the ability of a bacteria to live at shipment and shop conditions and still be alive.... is it keept in a fridge.. if not it does not appear it will contain live anything. except maybe snake oil.
  17. I thought they looked great from the first look....... but, I am starting to think that the may have to solve there turbulance issues before they reach 100%....
  18. wow a seller on trademe with no morals. say its not true.
  19. what mm diameter is most of the sand layton? when you say flow rate you mean over it? or through it? Peter
  20. so Reef, how does the buble king skimmer stack up against the Deltec? RnB
  21. I think 1/3 by volume of display.... maybe go up to around mid 50's kgs.... Brendan has some nice live rock for sale....
  22. I have been reading some interesting stuff about running a DSB, but draining small ammounts of water from the very bottom of the DSB (without disturbing it (ie via a tap off or buried pipe etc). People say the stuff you take out really stinks, as much as skimmer stuff. goto reef central and hunt around, there is lots of interesting discussions going on....

Oil of snake and ear of toad...... It will truely be funny if it turns out to be sugar/carbon source........ Its great to see a community that can bring its diverse resources to bear in identifying what is really involved, I give the entire zeo game about another 3 months, by then I think we will all publically know what is in the bottles etc........ I can see a shift back to DSB and lots of live rock, low bioloads etc etc coming.....
  24. wasn't starting rumours ben, just passing on what I have heard. As someone who works in financial markets I am always tuned to issues. I too have heard of rumours of new store locations.... for years.... It is just such a change to see "big" discounts, sorry about the spelling.... I was honestly just trying to point out to people the fact that there are some big discounts going down instore on dry goods.
  25. Was at jensens last night, there are some decent % discounts going down there on dry goods. I heard some rumours re Jensens a while back re change of ownership and financial issues? They look to be clearing down stock levels at the moment? lots of marine stuff 40% off.... big discounts on arcadia units...... (I really like the lines on these units but man they are still expensive !) any gossip.... PM me if you do not want to post.... RnB
