    AUCKLAND REEF CLUB

they may do it for the bar takings.... I belong to quite a few other hobby clubs.... none meet at members homes. I agree no one ever wants to pay for anything until they see value.... just a thought.

    More algae.

had same issues..... may have just been time, they all stopped about 9-12months in. only change that may have helped is moving to larger NSW changes from salt mix.... (33% per month) but could also just have been time for cycle to run....

    AUCKLAND REEF CLUB

I will ask ponsonby and victoria yacht clubs about venue/bar, they all need the revenue these days..... to be honest tho I am trying to cut down We seem to to the mill around and chat thing really well... If we started with the formals, organised a datashow and did a presentation or two.... then did the mill around thing/buy/swap etc... I think it would develope quite quickly..... STEVE - did you incorporate or whatever the club?

    AUCKLAND REEF CLUB

calvin is a keen lad, The task of getting the club running is an organisational one..... focus needs to be Easy to plan your attendance. Regular meetings, I say monthly. possibly on a day that out of toweners could vists, sundays mentioned. Meetings advertised 2 months in advance and not changed! If the date is advertised long enough in advance, it will be up to you to move other things etc. Neutral central venue, I will ask 2 venues at westhaven what they charge.... I am sure others have ideas. cheap, cheerfull and easy parking/motorway access... Educational I would like to hear from someone who has breed and raised clownfish..... sure others have questions/topics. Networking Place to meet and discuss our hobby...... Buy/Sell/Trade/frag swap etc Lets do it, anyone can sell anything, at any price they want...... Lower the better 8) ALL WELCOME TO SELL AT THESE MEETINGS. other ideas? we need to get our act together, one day we may have make submissions to govt over imports etc... without some formal structure in place, it would be hard to be taken seriously.
  6. I see PC100 seeling a few corals off. good bidding going on, I think this is a great way to sell corals Peter

    AUCKLAND REEF CLUB

mate that would be SO SILLY... This is where the hobby grows up imho and says it wants one united club of interested people, have an elected committee and if the members so wish, exclude commercial interests from control of thier club.... Meetings should be held on completely neutral ground to enable everyone to attend. Yes everyone. even with our differences we will be stronger together. What do others here think?????

    AUCKLAND REEF CLUB

so where will the next meeting be? Is this a meeting of the society that Steve/nick where forming or is it another reef club? I believe there is probably only room for one decent reef club in AKL with regullar meetings, (2nd blah of month) etc, speakers etc etc. I appreciate the work done by Alois/Steve/Nick will it be possible for this control to be passed to an independant chairperson/committee etc so that the club is not controlled by commercial interests.... Reef Tank-Auckland

the cycle looks VERY SHORT, possibly because at resonance it probably would be quite quick due to the limited length of the tank. when diving it generally feels more like a 2-3 second surge having said that, if diving in shallow water say 15 ft with waves breaking across the top, you can get a very regular short surge... this may match reef fringes.

    Reef Tank-Auckland

I have several large sheets of glass in my hallway, just walking past makes them creek at the moment. would like to see a wave box running myself to get a feel for the stresses, from the promo video they look high, from my experience diving, this kind of motion is very powerfull. I have knocked skin off kuckles due to wave motion. Is it an acrylic tank in the video? my acrylic has rounded corners and 100mm of overlapped welded seams. I would be happier using this then a glass one, simply because of the size of the joins and the strengths of a weld vs silicone. Acrylic will also bend further before it reaches its breaking point. AW - to be honest my stand is probably weaker then my tank, i am sure it was never designed to cope with a wave motion. Peter

    Reef Tank-Auckland

yes but it would be happening to 500kg of water , 4 feet from my bed!

looking at the video these things prodce a lot of movement..... Knowing the forces involved when water sloshes around, what sort of stresses is this thing loading up your tank with? I think they are a cool device, but if the wave box finds your tanks resonance point.. what happens then? not been critical reef, just as an engineer the video reminds me of that famous bridge scene in the us.... AUCKLAND REEF CLUB

how serious can it get, its only pretty coloured fish and stuff.
  19. run it up, cut mains and time it........ in theory.... we should have retained the America's cup. I think the state of the batteries prob a big facter.
  20. I think most of us would, in the book the aurther states that tank raised clowns are a better choice if you want to bred yourself as well. Some of the advantages noted are; known age.. size is not always a good age indicater in wild caught fish quality.. if the breeder culls ahrd you are getting quality fish. conservation...
  21. was a diff place, maybe it was a mexico based one...... but this gives a good example of the scale of operation.......... Reefing is a huge hobby $$$ wise I think $200 mill in livestock PA globally has been quoted....... any feeling for how big the NZ market is? its my guess at retail level, about 3-400 k but could easily be double that I guess.......
  22. not if you read the book IRA it cautions against trying to make money by breeding... there is a LOT of time involved and they do not like missing feeds, or water maint not being done......... says at best you will probably cover your own hobby costs and its easy to saturate the local market....... whats the market for clowns in NZ anyway per year..... I would have though around 300-400 across all NZ... say 300 in akl across 3 shops 2 per week. I think if you want to cover hobby costs then import, that way you have less feeding/losses issues and can meet the market in any spicies. in time if they ban collection etc it may be a totally different proposition. Peter
  23. sure Pies I bring it down to WGTN next time I am down. this lot will make good food source for the tank....... in the book i think it says that only 1 out of 40,000 clownfish babies make it in the wild! This is all it takes to keep the population going. but that hatch and survival rates in tank can be 70% + with experience.....
  24. no dramas - yes its an excellent book...... I will also find a web link to a huge florida greenhouse where they growout clownfish in 100's of 300gal containers......
  25. I seriously recommend you buy a copy of this book via amazon.com then..... http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/1890087041/ref=sib_dp_pt/103-7837875-1014260#reader-link cost me about NZD$50 and it is a great book. while there is a lot of information on the web, and I am sure you could get it topgether without this book, I think that its a small price to pay to have it all done for you in one place..... As an aside, all the aurthers breeding is done with anemones....
