maxxi1 got a reaction from Teshe in Pond soil for planted aquariums
Dalton aquatic soil and cap it with something.. I have heard of people using other soils but as mentioned above it cannot have any fertilizer and it will create higher nitrates so you will need to take that into account

Having never used anything except aquarium gravel, I can't help you but hopefully someone else can. My plants have only ever had gravel and fish poo.

From what I have researched any organic potting mix will be fine. Just make sure it is actually organic.
Daltons Aquatic Mix is the most common dirt to use.

maxxi1 got a reaction from Caryl in Cyclone Gabrielle - important information
A message from the President of the FNZAS.
In light of recent events around Aotearoa, New Zealand, I wanted to reach out to all clubs to ensure that you are aware you can reach out to your executive should you need anything, we will try and assist in any way possible.
Contact can be made via the www.aquariumworld.nz forums or via email, if you are a member and you cannot get access to the internet my cellphone number has been sent out to clubs via email, you can text and I will load a post on your behalf.
If you think there is something specific the FNZAS can assist with, please let me know asap.
We know that some areas are going through a period of great devastation; and we want you to know we are thinking of you and helping from a distance in any way we can.
For your aquatic pets continue to do as much as you can.
Turn over water to help keep oxygen in the water.
Let the tanks cool down slowly by wrapping them in blankets if you can.
Reduce feeding to help keep water parameters in check.
If you are able to, do a small water change daily.
We understand that areas have no power, no cellphone coverage and roads are blocked and damaged. Please ensure you and your whanau(family) are safe first and foremost.

I honestly couldn't even tell you what one is... but the societies act is so archaic that is why it was rewritten last year and why I posted this as someone is working on our rewrite draft 😀

maxxi1 reacted to Caryl in Gold ancistrus fry
Terrible photo as glass was dirty and lots of reflections from surrounding windows but I wanted to get some photos before they disappeared again.
There is a teenage ancistrus (the one on the left side of the aquarium, you can just see a bit of the head) and 2 fry. You can just see dad's bristles bottom right

maxxi1 reacted to Caryl in Pothos plant for aquarium
I believe it is very good for biological filtration as it removes nitrates so helps reduce algae. It is grown above water with only the roots submerged. The roots should grow very well and provide good cover for fry. Some put them in hanging baskets on the top edge of the aquarium, no good if you have a lid that totally covers it, or put it in a hang on the back filter.

AGM 2022 Important Information
Notice of FNZAS AGM August 20, 2022, 10am (Virtual Meeting) details to follow
The FNZAS Executive is calling for nominations for the Executive for the
2022-2023 year.
To help people make a choice on becoming an executive we have attached a very brief overview and expectations of each position, please note the position descriptions are out of date and will need to be modernized.
Please note we need to ensure that the people who take on positions understand it is voluntary and they will need to commit time to positions and meet minimum requirements. The upcoming years ahead are vital to the FNZAS with the new Incorporated Societies Act being implemented.
All positions are deemed vacant therefore incumbents are required to re-submit nominations as in previous years.

Anyone seeking nomination must be a financial member of the FNZAS at the time. If the nominee is not attending the AGM we also require written consent to stand for office sent to the Secretary prior to the AGM. No nominations will be taken from the floor, unless there are no nominations/not enough nominations for a particular position.
Please send all nominations to secretary@fnzas.org.nz along with a Bio and Photograph prior to 31 July 2022 to allow time for these to be distributed to clubs and their delegates given voting instructions by their members.
Remits
Please send any remits your club has to secretary@fnzas.org.nz
Delegates
Clubs have until 31 July 2022 to submit the names of their delegates for conference to me. If you have changed your delegates since your last AGM, and you want your club to have a say at this meeting or be able to vote, it is important that I get this via email prior to 31 July 2022. We don’t want clubs missing out.
Attendance
Owing to recent changes to our social structure due to Covid 19 effects an all-online AGM will be once again offered to our members. Observers are also welcome.
Thank you
FNZAS Secretary

maxxi1 got a reaction from nomad fish in How to change filter pads
rule of thumb is no more then a third total filter media at once. As Caryl said, if you change it / them over a few weeks it should be okay
Are you sure its cotton wool and not the white filter sponge, which you may be able to clean in some old tank water and put back in and then replace when it starts to impact your filters flow

maxxi1 reacted to Caryl in What's happening to my plant?
Anubias do not like their roots planted too deeply. Thy are often tied to bits of driftwood or rock. I see it still has the metal around the base. Remove this. Sometimes a plant will drop leaves when introduced to a new environment, due to stress.
