  1. from what ive read the difference between squirt or no squirt is like a right angle in the piping im assuming the same applies to the seaswirl. i understand the principle behind both both want some objective opinions s to which will provide the best rate of flow and randomness
  2. lazy drawing i guess, the over flow out and the closed loop out would be bigger than the returns. the square over flow sounds like it might help a little. what are the advantages of the seaswirl as opposed to the squirt?
  3. yeah there is a pet corner in hamilton. for tanks then there are two people i know of, one is the wellington guy Peter??? and the auckland guy greg
  4. have you noticed any other fish harrasing him??? it might be finrot?
  5. who told you that??? i had no problems with mine
  6. Heres a rough idea of what i have planned the green is out and the red is in. :-? water goes down the over flow and through under tank sump etc. back up through the little giant (insert model here) through the ocean motion squirt and into the tank, im thinking like a squid setup. then the other holes are for the closed loop one intake and two outlets under the main rock work of the tank. suggestions?? oh and what size should the holes be???
  7. i've got the white type if you want. i think its time we start naming our frags like the americans do ill call it brians super white limited edition xenia

  12. 60 for a clown seems about right, depends on where from. Here in hamilton they used to cost about 90$ now they cost about 50 - 60 there are a few fish in that range, you should look out for fire fish as they are great little fish and because youve got a lid theres no risk of them jumping
  13. looks good, but what was the before and after??

    Hey all

salt buildup that comes from evaporation, more bubbles=more buildup

    Hey all

looks good so far. Are those bubbles??? it might be a good idea to take out the bubble maker as salt creep might cause problems in such an enclosed space
  21. like i needed another thread. so work is a bit of a drag and i get a bit bored i figure i should setup a little tank for work. just had a quick look at the LFS and they have these neat little aquaone tanks, panorama range or something similar. and it just so happens that i have a 18 watt pc light that would look great on it. my stocking plans so far are mushrooms, zoo's and xenia as all of these enjoy abit of mucky water, no fish. for filtration i think a HOB would be the easiest and probably the most effective (giveing the nessasary flow as well) i think i would need to mod it a little to be more suited to salt water. any ideas??

    Hey all

cool, well first of all that link above is good reading as far as the skimmers go. I personally dont feel confident in my knowledge of skimmers to make one, but its an option for those who are that way inclined. imo a skimmer is a great investment for a marine tank, i know a guy here in hamilton that ran a big aquaone tank stock and it did ok as a fish only tank but none of his corals prospered due to water quality issues and the level of light. my advise to him was to get rid of the stock filtration as it is more suited to fresh water, and to put a hang on the back skimmer on the tank. other than that it depends on what your plans are for the tank. Full reef, fish only, soft coral tank, hard coral tank. the gadgets you need will depend on your preference

    Hey all

welcome, i believe you are the only marine keeper in dunedin on the board. what did you want an explanation of?? was it the way protien skimmers work or cycling the tank? both are fairly easy to understand experiance plays a large part of it, and getting good advise is the best way to save money in the long run (usually form people that have made the mistakes for you)
