  2. i dont know a hell of alot about lighting or skimmers but im setting up a nano reef at the moment and i got all my live rock from the pet center in lower hutt and its full of all sorts of little critters and got quite a few hitch hikers turbo snails and a starfish and also a little mushroom coral i think its around $15 a kg but im shure if your getting a fair bit there'll be a discount involved haha. as for lighting im going to be using leds just currently saving my coins but on a tank your size i have no idea what would be good. :slfg: cant wait to see this materialize will be watching your progress closely :spop:
  3. +1 didnt evin think of that haha thats a awsome idea!
  4. haha nah i got the idea from the internet. after seeing the brine shrimp hatcherys and how much they were charging for them and how simple they actualy were i thought it cant be that hard to make so did a bit of research and found this video on youtube so thought i would chuck something up here for everyone
  5. i believe so as it helps keep the water at a good temperature and there is another reason i think but i can remember it at the moment haha
  6. i just did a post in the diy on how to make a brine shrimp hatchery check it out might be of some use
  7. once again stopped off at the lfs today and picked up my eheim compact 1000 and yet another piece of live rock :slfg: also brought my sand im going to use (have not put it in yet and wont be for some time) so got home installed the pump and new rock then did a 20% water change also brought some superglue gel to glue the new rock in place and also used it to kill off some of the aptasia (basicly just dabbed it on them) anyway heres some pics of the new rock and a little mushroom that hitchiked in on it  mushroom front view from the left from the right
  8. hey guys had a quick search on here and couldnt find any sort of how to on making one of these so thought id show you in a few easy steps! so things you will need 2x1.5ltr soft drinks bottles 1 air pump 1m air tubing desk lamp or lamp of some sort brine shrimp eggs salt water step #1 take your two bottles and cut them as so First bottle cut around the base of the bottle this will be your hatchery bottle with the second bottle cut about half way up this will be your hatchery holder step #2 slot bottles together as shown step #3 install air pump and tubing into the hatchery step #4 fill with 1 liter of water and add 1 tea spoon of brine shrimp eggs then leave for one hour with the air pump on to rehydrate the eggs step #5 after 1 hour add 2 tablespoons of aquarium salt to the mixture and place lamp over the top (this is a picture of the other one i set up yesterday but forgot to take pics as i was duin it) now leave for around 24 - 36 hours and boom! youve got brine shrimp now go feed them to you fish and watch them go crazy!! any feedback to this like how you get the best hatch rates and tips or tricks you use would be great this is the first time ive set one up and thought people might like to see how it was done!
  9. i am a member here and thenanoreef.co.uk but i look at alot of the other sites like mfk just to see what other people are duin haha i like being nosey
  10. never tryed it but what about http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-stereos/other/auction-548707049.htm takes up less room than poly and probably more affective :slfg:
  11. yeah your right its all "live" rock in there. as for the lights i have been talking to valray on trade me. and as much as i would love one the k3 pendant lights with all the adjustments they can do and that i just cant justify spending almost $600 on a light for the nano tank at the moment haha as for the ammonia it seems like its already peaked and is now dropping? ill do another test tonight and see what its sitting at only problem is i have a api fw kit that im using to test untill i can get back out to the lfs to get proper salty test kits i know this is probably silly using them as they are for fw but its all i have to work with at the moment and seems to give results. what test kits do you all reccomend i pick up on the next trip to the lfs? i was thinking ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, ph what others do i need? and which brand do you find is best? thanks for all the help btw guys
  12. glaucus atlanticus are such awsome looking creatures!
  13. haha no chance shes a good girl i can let her off for not wanting to be a mermaid.... untill i get that 3000ltr planted community i dream of then she will have no choice :slfg: yeah man he seems happy as eating his mosquito larvae and blood worms haha stoked as with him
  14. :slfg: :slfg: :slfg: funny thing is she can fit in the tank haha i told her i could get her a snorkle and mask and she could clean it for me.... needles to say she wasnt keen haha
  15. striking as in bright orange? if so then i think its all good haha i was just under the impression they were more golden haha
  16. also did tests last night ph - 8.2 ammonia - 0.25 nitrate - 0 nitrite - 0 salinity 1.023
  17. sorry to bump such a old topic but dose anyone on here know where i can get some of this stuff in nz? or a online site that sells it? thanks!
  18. i honestly dont know haha i was under the impression gold harlequins where more golden colored than bright orange like normal harlequins also was told golds were smaller than normals and the orange ones are noticeably larger than the golden ones? any help is going to be greatly appreciated haha have called the lfs and they said if they are normal harlequins its no problem to order more golds in and swap them out
  19. got a new piece of rock on friday and rescaped a bit i think it looks much better now! also got a whole bunch more turbos and other critters that hitchhiked in on the new rock haha
  20. couple more pics of new stock. apisto's been in there for quite some time now but on friday added around 75 suposeably gold harlequin rasboras but since they have been added and coloured up it looks like over half of them are just normal harlequins :an!gry bit disappointing because they came basically straight from the importer to me i didn't get a chance to see if they were actually golds in the store. any who heres the pics (give the harlequins a count and let me know how many you guys think are in there my count was 72 and gfs was 78) apisto! (my fav character in the tank)
  21. just finished doing water changes on 3 of my tanks the 680ltr, 120ltr and 30ltr what a mission but atleast its done now good to hear about the co2 system cam! ive now got a whole spare system minus the co2 reg running off a paint ball cylinder that is no use to me now that ive decided to go nano marine on the 55ltr instead of planted fw. might have to put it up in the for sale section
  22. oh cool. they seem pretty happy slithering around today i brought a tunze 6015 for the tank and ordered a eheim compact 1000 so now all i need is the lighting :happy2: and possibly skimmer but im still not really sold on that yet.
