  3. just did first round of testing on tank results are as follows salinity - 1.023 ph - 8.2 ammonia - 0.75ppm nitrate - 0ppm nitrite - 0ppm do those sound about right? also have been looking at led lighting options today and have narrowed it down to these 3 options what are you guys opinions on them option 1 - haqos power cree 40w - cheapish from fish street only problem is they are out of stock and im not shure when they will have them back in but read a few reviews and they all seem positive. price - $100 + shipping link - http://www.fish-street.com/haqos_power_cree_40w_led_lighting?category_id=118 option 2 - fluval sea nano - not shure on price for these yet talked to craig at the lfs yesterday and he was saying they are in the country but wont be for sale for at least a couple weeks. i cant seem to find a hell of a lot of info on them but being fluval i think it should be good as they have never failed me b4 price - $no idea yet link - http://blog.aquanerd.com/2012/10/fluval-marine-and-reef-performance-led.html and finaly option 3 - key aquarium led lighting - also from fish street a bit more than i want to spend on a light tbh but it seems like a awsome light and all the reviews are awsome price - 309.00 + shipping link - http://www.fish-street.com/key_aquarium_led_lighting_us_version?category_id=118 let me know what you think will best suit i have seen quite a few of theses tanks online with the 1st light on them and they seem to be going great so at the moment thats what im thinking i will get but would love your opinions cheers! also will post pics tonight
  4. hello once again! im very new when it comes to reef keeping (as in i have never had a reef before) and im probably going to have a few questions and such as i go along but heres a quick back story on how this came to be. (also i know its easier to start with a bigger tank especially when you are still learning but i just dont have the room for another big tank and my big planted tank will be converted to a reef in a couple years so this will be a starting point/learning curve for when that happens) so i brought this tank a while ago and was planing to do a nano reef with it with the idea of keeping two clowns and a few corals i had seen quite a few people on the net using these tanks for nano reefs and after seeing one in the pet store down the road i couldn't say no. so in the mean time while i was researching and trawling forums on the best way to go about it i set it up as a fresh water tank with the idea to have a iwagimi style layout but after waiting and waiting for the substrate i wanted to use to come back into stock i got sick of it and moved the freshies into another tank and decided flag using it as fw and just go straight to the reef. so any way now thats out the way heres how it stands at the moment today i went down the lfs and talked to craig (local guru) and was discussing my options with him as to what i need to get and what i want to achieve now im going to be upgrading the standard aqua one pl lights to led's but want to wait until the new fluval nano led kits are available in the country. also will be upgrading the power head to a ehiem compact 1000 and installing a tunze nanostream 6015 for extra flow. i am also contemplating a skimmer but after talking to craig he suggested i dont really need one on such a small tank as long as i keep up with the water changes. so after around a hour in the lfs i ended up leaving with some live rock and some salt (and one pissed off girl friend since i took so long :slfg: ) to get the tank cycling while i acquire the rest of the stuff for it (pump, nano stream and leds) all the rock is in and the water is salty have been sitting watching it for the last half hour and have spotted 3 small snails (no idea what type they are) and heaps of little pink wormy things and one little tency wency star fish looking thing which has had me mesmerized haha i will try to keep this updated as i go along and im shure ill have plenty questions for yall pics to come tomorrow schweeeet! will upload some pics tomorrow and try to keep the post up dated as i go along.
  5. Fair call yeah theyr all good in there if they dont have what your after they have no problem ordering it in for you.
  6. right i know im probably going to get flamed for this but im shutting this tank down and going to use it as a nano reef as i already have two planted fw tanks and want to try something different and a new challange. feel free to lock this thread mods there will be no further updates.
  7. also this may be obvious but keep the old filter running for a week or two b4 removal to give the new filter time to build up bacteria in the media
  8. Also went for a dive today not alot where we went an visability was average to say the least only managed to get one butter fish which was a very tasty lunch and a couple kelpies which have been mulched up and will be used for berly
  9. Well no i didnt realise that oops oh well to late now.. As for pillies theres heaps of frozen ones but theyr no good.
  10. i take it you went to the pet center then? haha i brought one of them from there a couple weeks ago along with a green phantom. craig who works there is a good sort keen fisho and always happy to help out. haha well played!
  11. yeah the kawhai was tiny tho so we used him as bait and the trev's wer all under size as well
  12. burritos didnt happen today we ended up getting to the markets to late was so gutted. had pita pit instead..it was average to say the least. plenty of pilchard up here in wellington but it all seems quite old and crappy (falls off the hook far to easy evin when tied on with elastic) i have given up on it and using squid definately dosent get as many bites but at least it lasts long enough to hook something. we went out the other day just off the rocks in the harbour caught 1 small kahawai 1 27cm blue cod (threw it back was to small) about 20 juvi blue cod probably 10 or so trevalleys (2 of which i used as live bait but no one was interested) and about 50 - 60 spottys.. bloody possums of the sea i hate the things! we did see a school of small fish about 10 meters out from us jumping about like they were being chased so threw our lines in bascily on top of them and nothing was interested haha just wasnt our day really. going for a dive tomorrow so hopefully that shows up something good
  13. Just had a clean out and trim on the big tank will do water change once i get home but for now heading to the markets to get burritos from my mates burrito truck if u ever go to the frankits markets in wellington or you see the bright orange burrito bros truck at a festval or market near you be shure to try one its my friend and his brothers new venture and not being biased they are hella good burritos :happy1:
  14. the pet center in lower hutt is good apart from that wellington is kinda lacking in good aquarium shops.
  15. hmm yeah i would of thought so too but who knows ill do another test tonight and see what the results are as for the java i have some in my low tech and thats not going to well ither haha i just want some blimmin plants to grow on my driftwood haha and the timers i got were the ones from bunnings cheap but definately not reliable im thinking of getting digital ones but my mates have used them in the past and also had nothing but trouble with them haha
  16. also thought i would add when i started the tank i added mature media from my other tank to the filter and used around 40 - 50lts of water from that same tank to help speed the cycle
  17. yes very frustrating these lights ive had nothing but problems with them also the timers i have are absolute crap when it looks like youve pressed in the buttons on them sometimes theyr not quite pressed in so you get the lights going off for 15 minutes at a time once in a while which is pissing me off haha hmm well it currently has 1 gold nugget pleco 1 green phantom pleco 2 adult guppies and 4 babie guppies 4 ottos 2 blackline flying foxes 3 blue rams 1 apistogramma cockatoo 2 bristlenoses 1 male fighter and most of those have been in there for at least a couple weeks now some of them (guppies bristlenoses blue rams fighter) have been in well over a month i did the tests about 5 minutes after a 50% water change would that have any affect? and as per the cutting dead leaves i have been removing most of the dead stuff but the camboba is definately not dead (its still growing well) its just yellow almost like what happens when you over fert tomato plants and the leaves start turning yellow but i dont know as for the java most of the stuff i got was quite small and seemd fresh apart from the normal java i got which was a big plant on a piece of wood and thats what seems to be dyeing off the most :an!gry :an!gry
  18. quick update tanks going well. since the last update have added two black line flying foxes. have been getting a bit of green hair algae throughout the tank and its starting to get on my nerves two of my lights blew so currently only have the two power glos running for 6 hours a day but b4 that i was running the life glows for 12 hours and power glos for 6 in the middle. really need to upgrade to the metal halides but cant find anything suitable in wellington :an!gry. using reccomended dose of ferts from valray and co2 is on 1 hour b4 lights and off 1 hour b4 lights go off did a 50% water change last night and tested the water levels are as follows ammonia 0, nitrates 0, nitrites 0 and ph around 7 all the plants are growing apart from the java basicly all of my java (needle, normal and widelov) is going brown and dyeing off any idea why? also the camboba is quite yellow but its still growing it just dosent look that great all the fish seem happy but its not really growing like i would like it too. any recomendations on what i can do to get premium growth and less algae would be awsome thanks!
  19. port nicholson also built my tank petes a nice guy just make shure you tell him EXACTLY what you want haha
  20. well thats a bit crap. oh well will see how it go's worst comes to worst it gives me an excuse to get another tank :slfg: both seem quite happy at the moment and have found them selfs homes at opposite ends of the tank in the caves provided but we'll see how they go.
  21. Audio - soul magnet lp fav song = headroom http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRqhjNn2bxE
  22. Wrong! anything apple is superior! i have had the iphone 3, iphone 3gs, iphone 4s and now the iphone 5 also own a macbook pro and apple tv used to have a ipad and imac but sold them as it was pointless having them both with a laptop and iphone but point is i would never buy another brand of phone again. apple phones are the shiznit. but that is just my personal opinion after all. :slfg:
  23. yeah everything was sending out runners and new leafs like mad but then the co2 reg broke and i had to cut lights down and stop ferting so it all kinda slowed down but its all back to normal now as of thurs and everything seems to be picking up again so hopefully should start going nuts again haha
