    high mg

My Mg levels are quite high. They have hung around 1100 for ages so i added two 1/2 cups of magnesium to the tank (about 3 days apart) now i realise sea water is 1300 - 1500, but when i tested tonight (about a week after i added the 2nd 1/2 cup) it came in at > 1500 (not sure exactly, test kit doesn't go higher than 1500) other than a large increase in coralline algae growth (calcium is 450), are there any adverse effects with having high Mg?

looks like that's still the case
  11. you are generalising again layton and aren't making a point. a dirty tank does not mean a bad tank. if you are insinuating it is bad, explain to me how pies tank has a massive pod population yet he has near perfect water parameters and nice coloured acro's?
  12. douwe is correct. yes, 1ltr = 1kg (freshwater, specific gravity of zero) Water, like any material, expands and contracts when its temperature changes. Warmer water is less dense (very slighlty) and thus will exert a tiny bit less buoyant force per unit volume. The weight of the floating object equals the weight of the water displaced. To displace the same weight of water, the volume of warmer water must be larger, hence the object sinks more deeply. These factors are negligible for us however! The important factor is how dense the weight of wood, pebbles etc is - the addition of say a piece of 10kg wood is highly unlikely to displace 10 litres (thus 10kg's) of water. depending on the type, perhaps more, perhaps less. it's hard to work out exactly, so it's just best to approximate it. however if you wanted to work it out, you need to see how much water is displaced and subtract this from the weight of all the items you've added (eg: adding items makes water surface rise by 'Y', so difference is weight of the timber, pebbles etc you add minus displacement = 'width x length x Y') and if you want to get really pedantic, 1. no tank is filled to the brim! 2. you should be taking your W, H, L measurements from the inside otherwise subtract the area of the glass thickness if you're taking your measurements from the outside! etc.
  13. how many do you have? i'll have some when you catch them...

  16. reef and pies should tack their tanks at the end of the thread, just as nice imo. of course, the italian gh tank is just crazy coz it's so damn packed with sps theres hardly room for fish. be like living in a straw field. gh,.. baah - a new fad in reefing, close to genetic modification if you ask me.

  19. as far as I can read, this will only happen if you overdose and don't keep with the program. a bit like topping up evaporation with saltwater, like running a calcium reactor too rich, like dosing trace elements without calculating what you actually need first... anything you overdose on is likely to cause these things. not everything needs to be scientifically proven - if it's visibly better on a greater majority of tanks than thats proof to me.
  20. i'll be keen for more too, i've trimmed mine so much it's almost gone
